Guest guest
Greetings: I've been a student, teacher and practitioner of modern, Western astrology for about twenty years. For a number of reasons, I've decided to become a student and, eventually, practitioner of Vedic astrology. I'm still in the process of discerning which "system" would be most appropriate for me to learn and follow and it is with this intent that I turn to this group for whatever help members are willing and able to offer. Please bear in mind that I am not even at the point where I can call myself a beginner: I have yet to begin studies -- formal or otherwise -- of any kind. (I am, in fact, seeking a comprehensive text for a beginner to use -- "Vault of the Heavens" and "Light on Life" have each been recommended to me: any suggestion as to which is better for beginners like me?) I recently posted, on a different forum, the birth data of a good friend who is (unfortunately) somewhat of a hypochondriac. His medical tests last year were, in fact, quite positive, but he continually worries about his health: he lost a sister to leukemia one year prior to his birth, there is heart disease in his mother's family (his maternal grandparents both died of this in their fifties) and colon cancer on his father's side (although his grandfather, who suffered from this, lived well into his nineties). When I posted his birth data, asking a general question about his health, I received a response indicating that, in the System under which his chart was examined, my friend may soon contract terminal cancer!!! My question is: are there other methods of Vedic astrology which can confirm or deny this dire prognosis? What does the "classical" or "mainstream" tradition of Vedic astrology have to say about my friend's chart in this regard? I have been given to understand that the System under which my friend's chart was analyzed is a controversial one among most classical Vedic astrologers, and I have been urged to "push for a deeper interpretation" by one of my friends who is studying Jyotish herself. Is there a different interpretation of these significators? I've appended the relevant data below. I've been informed that there are several indications of decreased longevity and poor health in his chart (?); that 12th lord Mars is debilitated in the Rasi and afflicts the 3rd, 6th (health), 9th and 10th houses; that as the 3rd, 6th, and 10th houses are mooltrikona signs, this affliction will be active during the bhuktis of Mars, Moon, Venus, Saturn, and Jupiter; that my friend is currently running a Moon/Rahu period and Saturn is caught up in the nodal axis, so this particular time would be difficult on his health and may be terminal; that the following periods of Jupiter and Saturn would not show respite through 2004; that Venus, lording the 6th of health, is in old age and too weak to protect the health; that the Moon, as an indicator of the lungs and immune system is debilitated in the 7th house, pointing to the possibility of venereal or sexually transmitted diseases; that Mars as the 12th lord and primary karaka for the immune system is also debilitated and indicates blood-born infections; and (finally!) that Saturn's weakness and affliction from Ketu, in addition to its afflictions in the D-6 and D-8, shows the possibility for chronic diseases including cancer. If anyone would care to comment on the above delineation, or on my friend's chart below, I would be MOST grateful and karmically indebted. I am barely a beginner in Jyotish and no expert, but my intuitive sense (which is usually reliable) tells me that perhaps the above Approach or analysis is too simple (simplistic?) and there is a larger piece of the puzzle that I'm missing here. I'd be extremely reluctant to pass on such a dire prediction to my friend, and I'd want at least a "second opinion" from a different perspective before I'd consider doing so.
