'Buddha was born in Orissa, not Nepal'

By Bibhuti Mishra in Bhubaneswar

Research has revealed that Gautam Buddha was not born at Kapilavastu

in Nepal, but at Kapileswar near Bhubaneswar in Orissa.

A rock inscription of King Ashoka, now at Ashutosh Museum in Kolkata

says that King Ashoka conducted worship at Kapileswar where Buddha

was born. This rock inscription was discovered at Kapileswar in 1802,

but was later transported to Kolkata via Puri.

As per this inscription, King Ashoka had visited Kapileswara in 240

BC and built a 'stupa' here.

The Japan Foundation for Asia centre has been approached by the state

museum to carry on further study on these unrevealed facets of

Buddha's life.

Says C B Patel the Superintendent of State museum: "It is a sensitive

issue. But researchers have also found that Buddha visited the

capital of South Kosala which is now located at Maraguda valley in

Nuapada district of Orissa."

Buddha's visit is further confirmed by discovery of two 'Muchalinda

Buddha' idols: one at Maraguda and the other at Ganiapally in

Baragarh district of Orissa.

Researchers have also found that two leading disciples of Buddha,

Tapasu and Bhallika, were Oriya merchants from Balasore. They were

travelling in a cart to Madhya Pradesh when they first met Buddha:

They gave him food in the Uruvella forest area between Orissa and

Madhya Pradesh.
