Dear Dhira Krsna dasa

In any astronomy program, eg www.csky.com (ie Cybersky program), while they

give the latd & longtd of the planets on right clicking, for the stars they

dont. But they give Rt Ascension (RA), Altitude, Declination, & Azimuth for

any star on right-clicking. RA is in hr-min-sec, & analogous to longitude

in the sky.

Approximately, 1 hr of RA= 1 hr of earth's rotation. I checked the RA of

various stars on various nakshatras, & one can see the RA progress

gradually. However, as there is no concept of 0 degrees longitude for the

sky in astronomy, unlike what we use in jyotish, by some conversion, u can

get the RELATIVE RAs of stars in the sky, not a direct longitude, which is

what u want. Or u may note down the longitudes provided for the planets

therein, see the nearest star & use that longitude for it & thus get the

longitudes for all the other stars. However, they STILL will not be based

on the 0 deg that we use in jyotish, & wd be relative to each other.

I understand that there is adequate controversy in jyotish on which star

is exactly 0 deg, leave alone which stars constitute which nakshatras in

the 1st place. Something I am not qualified to enter the melee with.

About some of your other questions: The rashis & nakshatras ARE of equal

angles, ie 30 & 13-20 respectively. These are given NAMES acc to the

closest stars approx in these arcs. The actual constellations (12 zodiacal

or 27/ 28 nakshatra) can NOT be of any equal length, some like Pi are huge,

some like Ar are tiny, some naks are not even in the zodiacal

constellations, but NEAR them, eg Orion, Delphinus, etc etc.

Again, about short/ medium/ long ascension of signs, that is the time taken

by the sign to traverse 30 deg of sky-arc, & relates also to the

latitudinal position of the observer, ie Southern vs Northern Hemisphere,

where they become opposite (ie short ascension in N Hemp= long in S Hemp).

Sorry, cdn't help u more on that.

PS I just thought: One way while looking at a sky-chart program, is to fool

around with the observing time & longitude, etc, till u get RA= 0 hrs for a

particular star. Then, every 2 hrs= 30 deg signs, similarly every xyz (by

24 hrs by 13-20 & mult by 360)= naks. But u will still have a 0 deg

problem, unless u fix RA= 0 for the 0 deg longitude that u want for the

star which is supposed to represent it.

Tropical zodiac has nothing to do with all this, & will confuse the mind

further. U HAVE to FIX a 0 deg which u believe in, & then use sky-charts

from a software, not a book, to figure out the rest

Cheers
