Guest guest
Dear Shri Venkatesh, I was told that mantras are to be chanted 108 times to make up for any mistakes (shortfalls) in counting. What I understand about the japa count is that if someone wants to obtain a sidhi or if one has to do as a remedial measure (for adverse conditions though techinically there is nothing adverse)than one is required to keep count. So by this logic if you do more than 108 count you will complete the required number earlier. One can increase the count but can not reduce or one has to start again. If one is doing japa with mala then one doesn't have to worry about count as mala has 108/54/27 beads. Moreover the act of using the mala makes one concentrate on the japa. The significance of 108 ,I have no idea. With regards Jagmeet P.S.:I was hoping that more learned members would throw light on this but then I didn't want your question going unanswered and if I am wrong hopefully someone will correct me. Guest guest
I read somewhere that 108= 27 Nakstras * 4 pada/half for each Nakstras. I am not sure if this is true. Guest guest
Vyam Vysadevaya Namaha! ----------------- Dear Venkatesh, 9 * 12 = 108. Maybe thats the answer. Even christian rosaries have 108 beads. Best wishes, Visti. --- chandan_astro <chandan_astro wrote: > I read somewhere that 108= 27 Nakstras * 4 pada/half > for each > Nakstras. > I am not sure if this is true. > Chandan > > vedic astrology, jagmeet s dheendsa > <jsdheendsa@j...> > wrote: > > Dear Shri Venkatesh, > > I was told that mantras are to be chanted 108 > times to make up for > any > > mistakes (shortfalls) in counting. What I > understand about the japa > count > > is that if someone wants to obtain a sidhi or if > one has to do as a > > remedial measure (for adverse conditions though > techinically there > is > > nothing adverse)than one is required to keep > count. So by this logic > if > > you do more than 108 count you will complete the > required number > > earlier. One can increase the count but can not > reduce or one has to > > start again. > > If one is doing japa with mala then one doesn't > have to worry about > count > > as mala has 108/54/27 beads. Moreover the act of > using the mala > makes one > > concentrate on the japa. > > The significance of 108 ,I have no idea. > > With regards > > Jagmeet > > P.S.:I was hoping that more learned members would > throw light on > this but > > then I didn't want your question going unanswered > and if I am wrong > > hopefully someone will correct me. > > Check out Shopping and Auctions for all of your unique holiday gifts! Guest guest
Dear Visti, If I chant more than 108 times, say 115 or any number that is not the multiple of 108, does a mantra loes its effect? I just want to confirm whether the rule is "at least 108" or multiples of 108. Guest guest
Dear Venkatesh, The person who gave you the mantropadesa will be the best person to clear your doubts. However the following general points can be considered. If one is chanting the mantra for a specific purpose (as expressed by the sankalpa before one starts the japa), one needs to follow all the rules as appropriate. If, however, it is done for attaining the grace of God (parameswara preetyartham), and the result (phala) is also offered to God (parameswara arpanam), then one need not keep track of the numbers as one is not doing it for personal gain. Such japa will result in purification of the soul (chitta suddhi). For more discussions on this topic, see Sringeri Bharati in Telugu (or a translation of it if available), where one of the earlier Jagadgurus Sri Chandrasekhara Bharati clarifies several such doubts of aspirants. Personally, I feel that the second approach is better, since troubles and successes will come and go, one might as well try to attain what is permanent. regards, Krishna. swamyvk wrote: > Dear Visti, > > If I chant more than 108 times, say 115 or any number that is not the > multiple of 108, does a mantra loes its effect?
