(ayurdaayaadhyaaya) I came acorss the following stanzas: aayurabdaadikam sarvam niScalaena guNeekRtam maatangaena hRtam labdam sauramaanaayurucyatae || (5th chapter and 34th Sloka). Multiply the longitude by 360 and devide it by 365. The result is Sauraayu. In the same chpater, it is mensioned in 41st sloka pancaaSaduttaraSatam raakshasaanam prakeertitam naraaNaam kunjaraaNaamca vimSoettaraSatam vidu@h || The longitude of Rakshasa is 150 and 120 for humans and elephants. Before, sloka 34, all the way (including in definition of Naisargika, Pinda, Chakra, Dasaa ayu), "Year" is used with out any definition. In the 34th sloka, how to get the same longevity in Saura varsha terms from the "years" is explained. From that, we may understand that year in all earlier slokas stood for 360 days where, each day is of 24 hours (only then mutliplying by 360 and deviding by 365 can be explained). Later, on again "Year" is used. Here, the year as we understand from Sloka 34 is to be used as nothing is mention in special. Thus, humans have 120 year paramayush. These 120 years are 120 * 360 * 24 hours. So, a plain Sayana year and neither a tithi day or a saura dina is used. Instead a year is of 360 days and a day is of 24 hours. This is what I understood. I beg you to correct my understanding if it is deviating from the truth. The time from sunrise to sunrise is not (exactly) 24 hours, but Bhava Lagna ignores the difference. Lagna on the other hand "drifts" from day to day because of the time difference. If one used a 360 day calendar things would start to drift quite soon as well. The correct view for a solar year is maybe to think of a year as the time passing between 0 Aries/Full Moon/New Moon no matter how much time is between (like in Bhava Lagna). In the first case the time would on average be 365.2... days. Since Vimshottari is based on the Moon and the Nakshatras one could argue a lunar year should be used in this case. But on the other hand it's not the normal Moon motion. I don't know if there are many words/definitions for a year in the classics.
