Dear all,

Is anyone familiar with "Light On Life" by Hart Defouw?

It is supposed to be a very good book on Vedic astrology for

beginners.

Has anyone read this book. If yes, can you give me some advice if I

should buy this book.

I am a complete beginner.

Regards,

Sagar Chitnis

Dear Sagar Chitnis,

In my opinion Both of Hart DeFouw's books are well worth reading. They

certainly aren't as 'easy' as many western written books however they are

not as 'foreign' as books written strictly from an Indian perspective.

DeFouw has undertaken an almost impossible task by striving to introduce an

Indian topic to a western mind, while doing justice to both.

If you have had the advantage of being raised in a Hindu tradition you may

find some of his explanations needlessly simplified. However if you are like

me, raised in the west without the benefit of Indian lore, you'll need all

the help you can get to increase you understand of this sacred science.

Good Luck and enjoy your reading...................Phyl

Dear Sagar,

in my opinion it is the best book for beginners. It doesn't give you a watered

down western version of vedic astrology. It gives you good background

information and I got the feeling that the authors really understand what they

are writing about. They spend a long time in India actually studying there and

that comes across.

Sagar Chitnis,

I recommend you use the new book "Vedic Astrology: An Integrated Approach,"

by Narasimha Rao for all fundamental questions on Vedic Astrology.

Namaste!

I find Hart's book excellent for real initial understanding of Mantreswar's

Phaladeepika and Parashara's great text. In his second book on

relationships he throws in some modern innovations of his own. I have

applied them to quite a few charts and found them valid. The closest book I

have to Hart's "Light on Life" from my Hindu shelf is Dr. Charak's "Elements

of Vedic Astrology vols I & II" or Kumar Ojha's "Predictive Astrology of the

Hindus." Sri Ranjan Bose has an introductory text in .pdf format online at his

web site which used to be at:

http://www.cyberus.ca/~crystar/

I initially took David Frawley's Vedic Astrology Course which gave me a

background in Ayurveda as well as Hindu Astrology. Hart gives a similar

bridge into Jyotish without being too simple and has a great section on the

Nakshatras and their meanings. The latter in my opinion is better than Bepin

Bahari's and easier than Shubhakaran's 2 volume set on Nakshatras. As I

have not read any of the newer books coming out in the last few years

(having gone back to keep up with my Western Tropical Studies) I cannot

suggest anything else. Of course having the books of the members of this

forum also would help you in the long term just because you can ask them

questions.

Om Sri Ganapati Ki Jai!
