Dear Doug & Sanjiv,

Sanjiv's chart makes a good example. Swamsa means the navamsa

ascendant. Looking at the trines from Navamsa ascendant we have only

Mercury and Jupiter in the 5th indicating the natural abilities and

learning interests.

Jupiter and Mercury are both strong, as one is exalted and the other

is Atmakaraka. In the intellectual sign of Virgo, they give thourough

learning of religious subjects and astrology, as Jupiter and Mercury

are karakas of those. Jupiter here with Mercury also gives

proficiency in many branches of learning.

Mercury can also give knowledge of commerce or trade here, as Virgo

is a commercial sign, as are the ascending signs. However Jupiter is

the atmakarka in the 5th house, showing that divination of the

future, and religion is the soul's desire.

As the Atmakaraka is in the 5th house, the Karakamsa ascendant is

Virgo, possessing those same planets, thereby indicating the same

interests, but in this case the soul's inclinations. Happily there is

a confluence, so there is no clash between the soul and present

incarnation.

Arudha Lagna was also given, as the same combinations recommended to

be looked at from Swamsa apply from here as well. Jupiter is in the

9th house, and Mercury owns the AL, going into Jupiter's sign,

showing the same relationship and abilities/interests. Rahu also is

in the 9th, which according to Parasar gives astrological abilities

as well.

hope this helps,

Thanks, Doug; I too thought that my chart made good sense:-) (I did not

add an additional parameter whereby the chandra Lagna is also vargottam...)

I appreciate your analysis. My concern, however, was more to establish a

precise definition.... If we look at the definition Narasimha provided:

"Swa simply means "self" and may refer to either lagna or atma karaka. So

swamsa refers the position of either lagna or atmakaraka in navamsa.

Parasara used "swamsa" for both lagnamsa and karakamsa. So swamsa here is

in Sg or Ta, depending on what we mean."

it clearly shows the controversy -- this is a flexible definition. Some

other books try to clarify this confusion by stating Swamsa is the stronger

of the two Lagnamsa and Karakamsa; if we look at the planets posited in the

signs it is clear that Vi becomes the Swamsa in my chart. Then, it is easy

to apply formulas like 5th from Swamsa or 10th from Swamsa... but

otherwise.....

It would be better if authors stop referring to Swamsa and clearly define

what they mean i.e. Lagnamsa or Karkamsa.

Best Regards,

SA

Dear Sanjiv, Doug & Alex,

I have a few comments on this and have included them under relevant extracts

of your mail:

Rath: That is the explanation from 'Maharishi Jaimini's Upadesa Sutra'. In

fact Maharishi has given a far more elaborate definition which I have given

with examples of use. The point of a more clearly defined term does not

arise as swamsa is by itself a very broad term and has been correctly used

by Jaimini to spell out the principles as well as their universal

applicablity.

Rath: There is no such definition as stronger of the two. Both exist and

this has been explained in my book. One is the Souls desire (Karakamsa) and

the other is the Lagnas ability (Lagnamsa). If there is a fine blending of

the two, then the achievements are fantastic. Alex has given a very good and

thorough reading.
