SOme become famous many do not. what are the various combinations for astrologers let us examine them one by one a) although there might be some disagreements on this point but the chief karaka for astrology is mercury. b) placement of mercury in shubha vargas and intuitive signs of sagittarius, virgo, cancer, scorpio and pisces gives some indications for astrology related profession. c) the placement of mercury in navamsa (d9) dasamsa (d10) and d24 the house of advanced learning gives some clues. d) the 12th house, 8th house, their lords and their respective positions are also crucial. 12th being 8th from 5th and 8th being a hidden house do signify intuitve capabilities. thus the placement of these planets in strong positions is crucial for astrology. e) the placement of jupiter and saturn are also crucial. if mercury is strong and jupiter is placed in 1st, 5th or 9th house, the native may write books on astrology. there are many other combinations but i would like esteemed readers to assess the above rules and may send their comments and criticisms to me. The chart below has all the 5 points listed by you below, however, it is combust (12 Sg 27) being in 2nd with Sun (1 Sg 53). I would add to things: First, Ketu with Mercury can be helpful in supporting the subtle thinking necessary. The 9H represents Father/Past. Quadrants to these houses provide sustainance. So, The present is seen from the Kendra (1,4,7,10 houses) that are overlorded by Brahma. The past is seen from the Apoklimas (3,6,9,12 houses) which are lorded by Vishnu and The future is seen from the Panapara (2,5,8,11 houses) which are lorded by Shiva. Hence houses 2, 5, 8 & 11 are important houses for Astrologers. Association of either Ju and/or Me with these houses are one of the sureshot indicators of Astrologers. Further, Jupiter is the planet of wisdom, discretion, judgment and traditional knowledge. Mercury is the planet of speech, solid knowledge, logic and reasoning. These two are the significators of astrology. The 2nd and 5th houses are important (also 8th). The 2nd is the house of speech and overall knowledge and awareness. The 5th is the house of intelligence, intuition and perception. The 8th is the house of occult and also research. Some astrologers also have Jovian influence on 10th (karma/action). Usually Jupiter/Mercury has a strong influence on 2nd/5th in rasi or D-10 or D-24 for astrologers. D-10 (dasamsa) is the chart of activities and achievements in society. D-24 is the chart of learning and knowledge. In addition, D-27 is the chart of strengths and weaknesses. The 2nd in D-27 shows one's vaag bala (power of speech) and 5th and 8th show intuition. Those with very strong Mercurian/Jovian (esp Jovian) influence on 2nd/5th/8th in D-27 have a knack for making correct predictions. Dasas have a role too. Astrologers go through phases of success and failure. D-27 Narayana dasa can be helpful. Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra: BPHS ch 33 87: Ketu in the 5th from Swamsa will make one a mathematician and skilful in Jyotish. Should Jupiter be related to the said Ketu, these learnings will be by inheritance. All these as well apply to 2nd and 3rd from Swamsa and to the Swamsa itself apart from applying to the 5th from Swamsa. BPHS ch 33 sl 44 and Ketu or Rahu in Karakamsh or in the 5th from there denotes that one is a Jyotishi. Jaimini in his Upadesha Sutras expands further on Parasar by writing that these combinations of Ketu in the 5th/swamsa are also to be seen from AL and lagna. Likewise that not only the 5th house is to be looked at, but every trine. Also Parasara and Jaimini make reference to Ketu in the 5th making the person a watchmaker. Ketu seems to be related to the measuring of time. Both of these sages mention specifically Ketu and Rahu as indicating jyotishis. I sometimes find astrological analysis to be much like the multilayered logic involved in computer programming. It is valid to say, that Jupiter, Mercury, Ketu and Rahu indicate jyotish. But why? How do each of these contribute? I know a very competent Jyotishi who uses only the rudimentary techniques of D-1, some D-9 and vimshottari. She tells me that the only way to see the correct answer is to apply the rules in combination with performing a lot of puja. She then intuitively knows the answer. "Swamsa" is a term used by Parasar and Jaimini in their respective works. "Swa" means 'self', or 'own'; and in regards to the D-1 Rasi chart refers to the ascending house. "amsa" means divisional chart, most commonly referring to the D-9 Navamsa chart. So the first meaning is the D-9 navamsa position of the ascending house, which is the same as the lagna in the navamsa. Secondarily "swa" refers to the chara Atmakaraka (AK). This is the planet with the highest degrees within a sign. This also represents the self. So this planet's position in navamsa is also referred to as Swamsa. However Parasar makes distinctions in his chapter 33 of BPHS on Swamsa, between the terms Swamsa and Karakamsa. "Karaka" refers to the "chara (moving) karaka" (Atmakaraka/AK). For this reason, when karakamsa is mentioned it refers only to the navamsa position of the AK. The way that the chapter is written, it appears that when Parasar mentions Swamsa he intends it to be seen from the navamsa lagna (lagnamsa), as well as the karakamsa. If you have Brihat Parasar Hora Sastra, please read this chapter, as it is very informative. Rahu influencing 5th, doesn't however show Jyotish ability.
