Hare Rama Krsna.

Pranams.

Could somebody help me with the planetary positions at the time of the

Battle of Kuruksetra? I heard Krsna was about 90 years old at that time. Is

that correct?

[WARNING: I will use the Gregorian (new) calendar for all the dates.

Around 3000 BC, neither Julian nor Gregorian calendar was in use. So, instead

of extrapolating the Gregorian calendar, I will just use the Gregorian

calendar. Based on the setting of your program, the dates may have to be

adjusted by 19 (?) days in order to get the same planetary positions.]

Mahabharat war is supposed to have commenced on Sukla Trayodasi tithi

(13th day of the bright fortnight) of Margasira month in the Shubha-krit

year. Shubha-krit year comes once every 60 years. Vyasa said that 7 great

planets appeared in the sky as if they were colliding. So we must see 7

planets in a close region of the zodiac and these should be other than

Rahu and Ketu (shadows). Vyasa also mentioned solar and lunar eclipses

in Aswayuja month.

Kali yuga is supposed to have commenced in 3102 BC and the war is supposed

to have taken place 36 years before that. All this is controversial, but

the current accepted (?) date for Mahabharat war is 3138 BC.

However, using Lahiri ayanamsa, there is no Margasira month in 3138

BC! Sun & Moon had a conjunction on August 6 at 0 Li 11 and on Sept

4 at 29 Li 57. So there was an adhika (extra) Kartika maasa (month) and

a nija (true) Kartika maasa. The next conjunction on October 4 was at 0

Sg 01, starting a Pushya maasa.

So I took an ayanamsa that is less than Lahiri by 3 arc-min. During

my studies in Kalachakra dasa also, I arrived at a similar ayanamsa.

There were indeed solar and lunar eclipses in Aswayuja maasa and 7 planets

in two rasis (apart from Moon and nodes).

With this ayanamsa, the following is the possible chart when the great

battle started:

See that Mars, Neptune, Sun, Saturn, Mercury, Uranus and Venus (7 planets)

are in just two rasis. There were solar and lunar eclipses in Aswayuja

month.

Disclaimer: This is ONLY SPECULATIVE. This is NOT AT ALL FINAL. We need

to conduct FURTHER STUDYIES, as there are a lot of questions about the

tithis and nakshatras at the birth of Pandavas and the amsas occupied by

planets in their charts. For example, Yudhishthira (eldest Pandava) was

born on year Prajapati (Prajotpatti), month Aswayuja, Sukla Panchami tithi

(bright 5th), in Dhanur (Sg) lagna and abhijit muhurta. Parasara taught

in BPHS that Yudhishthira had a raja yoga with raja yoga giving planets

in Simhasanamsa (5). If you cast the chart, you will see 9th lord Sun and

10th lord Mercury in Virgo. Exalted Mercury is only in Gopuramsa (4) and

NOT in Simhasanamsa. There is a viparita raja yoga between 6th lord Venus

and 8th lord Moon in Sc (12th). This is quite powerful and Moon is indeed

in Simhasanamsa. Was Parasara talking about viparita raja yogas too? Was

he talking about both the planets being in simhasanamsa or only one?

However, the corresponding Sri Krishna chart (Sreemukha year, Sravana

month, dark 8th tithi) does NOT have any planet in Devalokamsa (as required

for an avatara of Vishnu, as per Parasara).

By going back from the end of Kali yuga by a little more, I obtained

a Yudhishthira chart (Prajapati Aswayuja Sukla Panchami, Dhanur lagna)

with 3 planets in Simhasanamsa. The corresponding Krishna chart (Sreemukha

Sravana Krishna Ashtami, Taurus lagna) and Arjuna chart (Sreemukha Phalguna

Pournami) had one exalted planet each in Devalokamsa. However, corresponding

war year (Shubha-krit) coming about 90 years later did not have eclipses

in Aswayuja maasa.

Only with extensive research can we match all the tithis, nakshatras,

eclipses, adhika maasas and planetary positions given in Mahabharata with

real positions and fix the dates. A LOT OF RESEARCH NEEDS TO BE DONE. What

I gave above is only what is commonly accepted. It could very well be wrong!

May Jupiter's light shine on us,

Narasimha

Hare Krishna.

Jaya Sri Jaganath, Sri Baladeva and Srimati Subhadra.

I have just a couple of comments.

I read this in a book about:

"... the day following 1582 October 4 (Julian calendar) is 1582 October 15

(Gregorian calendar)."

So the difference is by 10 days (note that the next day from Octuber 4 must

be October 5. Then, the difference between October 15 and October 5 are 10

days).

> Kali yuga is supposed to have commenced in 3102 BC and the war is supposed

I think that it must be taken in account, that 3138 BC is -3137 in Julian

calendar in the use of the computer.

> However, using Lahiri ayanamsa, there is no Margasira month in 3138 BC! Sun

> & Moon had a conjunction on August 6 at 0 Li 11 and on Sept 4 at 29 Li 57.

> Kartika maasa. The next conjunction on October 4 was at 0 Sg 01, starting a

And the last is from the article about sunrise:

"For calendarical proposes, we should follow Tropical Zodicac

commencing from the day or point of accurance of vernal Equinox. Lunar

Months should follow Tropical solar Months as per scheme laid down in

Vishnu Purna Second Ansha, Chapter Ten."

So, what i understand, is that it could be posible that it is not use of

ayanamsa for the solar month. Then, a doubt arise, and is the use of

ayanamasa for the position of the moon in the nakshatras.

And I found this in a spanish translation of Mahabharata, in the chapter of

the Bhisma's pass away (sorry for the translation to english):

"At least, after a long time, the Sun has turn his charriot towards the

North... The month of Magha has come..."

I hope this could help in some way.

Your sisya:

Luis.
