Join us for this weekend-long, 16-hour intensive course of study leading to a

Certificate in Ayurvedic Self-Care & Health Maintenance. This program is

intended as an introduction to Ayurveda that is both detailed as well as of

practical use to the non-health professional who wishes to take a more

responsible part in caring for his or her health. In addition, it will serve as

a basis for more advanced training for those desiring to either become

practitioners of Ayurveda or to extend their skills to care for their families

or to incorporate Ayurvedic principles into existing health care practices.

 

This course is planned as the first of several programs in Ayurveda that will

take students through intermediate and advanced levels of proficiency and which

will train and certify students as Ayurvedic health consultants.

 

The course's instructor, Dr. Aparna Bapat, is one of the world's premier

writers, scholars, teachers and practitioners of Ayurvedic medicine whose work

is known in the United States, the United Kingdom and India. Dr. Bapat

is a graduate of the University of Pune Faculty of Ayurvedic Medicine & Surgery;

is formerly Senior Lecturer at the College of Ayurveda (London, U.K.).and is

presently consultant at the Ayurveda Center, New York City.

She is the author of numerous articles on Ayurvedic medicine and related themes

and has made multiple television appearances (on London's Zee-TV) as health

issues consultant.

 

SYLLABUS

 

This introductory program of classes is intended for the student with no

previous exposure to ayurveda. Made up of sixteen class hours of instruction

with lectures as well as assigned outside readings, it is both a freestanding

course for the individual interested in ayurveda to care for themselves and

their families as well as a basis for further study.

 

Students who complete the course (attendance at all sessions required) and a

final examination will

be awarded a Certificate in Ayurvedic Self-Care & Health Maintenance. Following

the lecture intensive, 30 days (extensible to 60 days) of self-study is afforded

to review material presented in class and to complete the open-book final

examination.

Saturday Session - March 4, 2006

(Sections I through IV)

 

Section I

History of Ayurveda; basic concepts; terminology

and nomenclature; basic concepts; theory of the Dosas; characteristics of living

systems; the profession of Ayurvedic medicine today

 

Section II

Sankhya philosophy; mind-body-spirit connections; Vedic cosmology; creation and

nature of energy, matter and life processes

 

Section III

Ayurvedic physiology: the 3 Dosas, 7 Dhatus, 3

Malas and 20 Gunas

 

Section IV

Mind-Body-Spirit Constitution; Prakriti

 

Sunday Session - March 5, 2006

(Sections V through VIII)

 

Section V

Prakriti & Vikruti (continued); Constitutional

analysis

 

Section VI

Origin and elaboration of the disease process

(pathogenesis); 6 stages of Samprapti; practical applications

 

Section VII

Self-analysis and preventive health care; daily

diet, exercise and yoga; mental and emotional hygiene

 

Section VIII

Healing properties of foods; diet therapy; home remedies; herbs in Ayurveda
