This program is intended as an introduction to Ayurveda that is both detailed as well as of practical use to the non-health professional who wishes to take a more responsible part in caring for his or her health. In addition, it will serve as a basis for more advanced training for those desiring to either become practitioners of Ayurveda or to extend their skills to care for their families or to incorporate Ayurvedic principles into existing health care practices. This course is planned as the first of several programs in Ayurveda that will take students through intermediate and advanced levels of proficiency and which will train and certify students as Ayurvedic health consultants. The course's instructor, Dr. Aparna Bapat, is one of the world's premier writers, scholars, teachers and practitioners of Ayurvedic medicine whose work is known in the United States, the United Kingdom and India. Dr. Bapat is a graduate of the University of Pune Faculty of Ayurvedic Medicine & Surgery; is formerly Senior Lecturer at the College of Ayurveda (London, U.K.).and is presently consultant at the Ayurveda Center, New York City. She is the author of numerous articles on Ayurvedic medicine and related themes and has made multiple television appearances (on London's Zee-TV) as health issues consultant. SYLLABUS This introductory program of classes is intended for the student with no previous exposure to ayurveda. Made up of sixteen class hours of instruction with lectures as well as assigned outside readings, it is both a freestanding course for the individual interested in ayurveda to care for themselves and their families as well as a basis for further study. Students who complete the course (attendance at all sessions required) and a final examination will be awarded a Certificate in Ayurvedic Self-Care & Health Maintenance. Following the lecture intensive, 30 days (extensible to 60 days) of self-study is afforded to review material presented in class and to complete the open-book final examination.
