Guest guest
Not trying to change or challenge prevailing opinions, but just a few thoughts, if I may. Keep or toss, as they say! I would have given the portfolio of common sense (Vyavaharik buddhi) to mercury without afflictions. Discipline (niyama/sanyam) is from the 2nd house. Fifth is pleasure - - impulsive ones even. The tenth therefrom governs the balance, for obvious reasons. Interestingly, the lord of 5th in Marilyn's chart is mars and is placed in the 8th with jupiter. Doesn't take much imagination to see the connections in her life as we know them. Both lord of 2nd house (discipline) and mercury (karaka for commonsense) are placed in the badhakasthana, 11th. I have often seen and recommended that more stress be given to the planets in badhaksthana (rather than blaming the lord of said house!) and in this case more explanations are not warranted. Throw in the intrinsic karakattwa of sun and it adds even more. The strong libra saturn aspecting venus in 10th explains without much injection of imaginative explanations about the role of older men in high places that helped and defined her role in this lifetime, that of venus incarnate as some would say. Mercury is weak in bala and is pairing with the Master of confusion - - rahu and other malefics in some of the relevant and significant vargas. I will give it rest there, given the post-mortem nature of this examination. Guest guest
Dear astrologers, Do not forget the roles of rahu-ketu here. Both of them take one away from reality in their own different ways. An individual may be very intelligent and showing lot of pragmatism in daily life, but in certain matters, he may show total lack of common-sense. In matters of love, almost everyone goes without any common sense. That is why they call it "falling in love". Venus can be blamed squarely for "falling in love". In other matters like those related to profession, fame and health, rahu-ketu, especially ketu, the headless one, have been found to be responsible. Now, something which might pinch the religious ones. Jupiter is the karak of religion, rituals, traditions, law, etc. None of these have any space for common sense. A very strong jupiter takes one away from it too. An exalted mercury, causes too much logical analysis of even trivial situations, again reducing common sense. In short, every planet contributes in its own way. Regards, Ashutosh - rohiniranjan Monday, 02 January, 2006 09:33 Re: Lacking in common sense (?) - Another viewpoint ... Guest guest
Dear Srinivasan, Mercury symbolizes the curiosity in us. Virgo as such is also a very inquisitive and critical sign. A native with exalted mercury, especially as a child who has not yet learnt the disciplines of life (represented by jupiter), has perpetual questions on his lips and constant exploring of his surroundings in his actions. In professions, the career which aptly represents mercury in virgo, is journalism. The reporters, keep on asking questions, snapping photographs, however meaningless or silly they might sound. They interview a dying man's wife and ask her,"How do you feel?" Mercury knows how to collect details and knowledge, but lacks the sensitivity to realize the emotional and ethical impact of the information it is collecting and spreading. People with a powerfull mercury have a tendency to talk more and hear less. They are in love with their own voices and verbal abilities. They like to argue and to go to illogical lengths to prove their logics. It is called "Skinning a hair". But, these aspects are seen mostly when mercury is alone in its own sign. In combination with venus and sun, its inquisitive qualities are channelised properly. With venus, it performs at its best. Venus gives it the ears to listen and better sense to how to and "whether to" use the information it has gathered or not. Person with a powerfull mercury inquires more and understands less, whereas a person with powerfull venus asks less and understands more. Mercury is also responsible for interest in sciences like astrology, and most of the astrologers have a powerfull mercury. No wonder we see so many lengthy and verbose discussions on any astrological topic. As I put it, they try to catch hold of their noses by reaching behind and around the head when the simple, short and natural way is available to do so.
