Dear Tarun,

prANa pratiShThA is the process of 'imparting life' into an idol or kalasha or

yantra or any other worshipable item prescribed by Vedic and tantrik texts,

with respective mantra and tantra prescribed for the deity invited in AvAhana.

This process is carried out in every pooja as a part of 16 worship methods

(ShoDashopachAra). There are two types of pratiShThA or installation - temporary

as in poojas and permanent as in temples.

When it is temporary, the worshipper or priest on behalf of worshippers imparts

his prANas (prANa, apAna, vyAna, udAna and samAna) through his ucchvAsa and

nishvAsa (ihalation and exhalation). This lasts until visarjanA or liberating

the prANas at the end of the uttara-pooja (post-pooja worship). Before this, the

idol etc, is regarded as SAME as the worshipper and tantrik texts describe that

any problem caused to the idol etc., MAY reflect the same on the worshipper in

certain cases.

When it is permanent installation, procedures are complex and are ruled by the

rules of Agama shAstra, the temple archtictural sciences according to the diety

being installed. Shiva pan~chayatana(Aditya-ambikA-gaNanAtha-hari-hara) idols

follow shaiva Agamas while vaiShNava schools follow pAncharAtra Agama or

vaikhAnasa Agama. prANa pratiShTha in a temple needs precious jewels of meaured

quantity to be placed in the place beneath the idol; and some times in different

parts of the temple. This process should be carried out on special days

prescribed astrologically and at special times elected by muhoorta techniques.

There are special time selection methods depending on the temples too - like

aShTamangala deva prashna technique used in temples of Kerala.

an Agamika may give you much more detailed procedures. Hope this helps.

yours humbly

Dear Friends,

Statues are usually meant for person and society after recognising their

contributions ,errect in public places and are not for worship purpose.where

ever worship is allowed and has to be performed always a procedure has to be

followed. These procedures have been given inour sastras.

Agama Sastra have given descriptive methods for performing rituals.when ever

human shape Idols are worshipped for specific purpose pranapratishta forms part

of the vidha after proper initiation and sankalpa.

In temples when ever vigraha pratishta is to be performed,it incudes very

elaborate

procedures of placing yantra, dhwajasthbharohna, mahakumbhabhishekam and navagraha

yagam.

Even prana pratishta is part of pooja vidhan usually and performed through a

Priest or Karta for invoking the Gods while perfoming pooja for all most all

poojas like Gauri pooja/Vrat, Shri Vinyaka Chaturdhi,Satynarayana pooja and

other rituals where in udvasana and visarjana are considered essential to

conclude the rituals.

Dear Tarun,

Different texts give different views on doing pooja with idols in

grains or cereals. In most of the old texts like Nakshatra

ChintaamaNi, what I have seen is that the quantity of the grains

used has a relation with the height of the idol installed in it.

Mostly, the height of the idol is the line joining the apex of the

grain pyramid to the respective manDala base. That is:

For Moon, the base of the pyramid is SQUARE(caturasra maNDala), the

grain is rice(taNDula); for Sun, the base is circular and grain is

wheat etc. The procedure of prANa pratiShThA is same as in any other

pooja(temporary installation). In case of grains, the base maNDala

and its pyramid or cone, as well as the type of the grain are

important. Also, the type of metal used for the idol matters in some

cases - like silver for rice and niShpAva(a bean-pea). Even without

idols, grains in their prescribed maNDalas are reagarded as GODs and

are worshipped as usual.

yours humbly

Dear kadrudra ji,

thanks for explaing in beautyful language.

actually i was trying to interpretate what actully God is. No one has seen yet.

i think so.

because as all the cerials have some realtion to planets like wheat(sun), rice (

moon) pulses to

someother..

as we lean in front of idol we take energy in the idol which was transferred to

it via grains.

and thus it help us to get rid of planetry forces which are spoiling ourselves.

may be you will find this logic somewhat different but we adopt this as a

solution in Vastu

Shastra. to keep grains in North side of house

thanks

Tarun

Dear Tarun ji,

As soon as the idol is received, the silpi known assthapati who has carved/made

the statue is involved in a very very elaborate process till he hands over the

statue to the Yagna Karta for pratishta purpose there are lot of vidhnas and

involves,nagaraha pooja,avarana pooja,ganesh pooja and thenyantrasthapana along

with precious stone, gold ,silves, navadhanyas etc.The palce particularly place

around the inside sanctum sanctorum is cleansed as per Agama Satra procedures

and evil forces are guarded carefully through mantras and vedic chantings. In

these process each and every part of the idol is worshipped and Natural deities

are invoked first before the idol is made ready for pranpratishta. This is the

job of Daivagna who plays lead role in pranpratishta.

To describe the whole process is very long and one has to read fully

well, understand and in vedic chantings the function is carried out for temple

purpose in 3days before public are allowed for worship
