Guest guest
Nature's Astrology Fairfield, Iowa USA m.kincaid Dear Friends: This last weekand all the very harsh happenings of the hurricane Katrina, made me think a lot about the purpose and goals of various 'Malefics' in Jyotish, as in life. This last week, we had a wide variety of 'malefic' situations going on, from the Moon transiting where Saturn is, (ie. in Cancer), to Mars' influence upon Saturn and the Moon, and Rahu, from Pisces, also influencing Cancer, and finally the tail end of the Waning Moon situation which seems to correspond very exactly to all kinds of griefs. Now, the Moon's begun Waxing, and you can immediately feel that relief. Before, I could hardly think of the situation and it was literally like a storm in Consciousness, very similar to the physical 'storms' we had. The Philosophy of Malefics and Benefics is a very fascinating aspect of Jyotish, Astrology. Because knowing that these are your strengths and these 'others' are your weaknesses, does help. When you know there's a real, concrete reason why you suffer, fail, make mistakes, have accidents, etc. then, we at least don't feel the universe is unfair. We may not understand yet, how these effects are due to our actions, and we may wish we have the karma of another, but it is slightly comforting knowing it's there, in our charts. Then, as our study of our charts continue, we begin to feel even more the 'rightness', of our charts, that they really do 'fit' us, then we begin to accept, in a way that we may not ever, have done before. With acceptance, comes the real 'preparedness' for change and self-transformation. Though traditionally, most people in Jyotish have a kind of fatalistic view towards these same malefics. "Oh, you've recently moved in Saturn dasa. You just have to learn to weather the storm." Though the prospect of continuing like this, for another 16 years, can be very depressing! #1 This is the first principle of Malefics, that the different aspects of our charts, represent the positive and negative karmas, of our lives. How we deal with this knowledge is up to us, we either do the best we can, or we become interested in what Jyotish like's to call 'remedial measures'. There is a traditional belief that certain malefic situations may be improved by the picking up of remedies, like mantras, gems, doing particular behaviors on specific days, and on and on. But, there is quite a bit of controversy about remedies depending upon how much each person believes in the absoluteness of fate. For me, fortunately, I came to Jyotish, now, about 18 years ago, from a heavily flavored self- transformative, Vedic background. I'd been meditating since 1971, (now over 34 years), and had explored yoga and ayurved, something called yaguas, (Vedic recitations), among the many Vedic disciplines that are available. Therefore I was already quite believing in the possibility of self-improvement so when I stumbled upon Jyotish the belief in self-transformation came naturally. Though I have to admit when I slipped into my Saturn Mahadasa in the spring of 1991, and all manners of grief stated to come to me, I began to think maybe there was something to this 'fate' thing. Having Saturn in my 12th house, I was still not prepared for the systematic losses that I began experiencing from loosing wives, money saved, child passed away and my father dies, all in the next few years. I remember turning to Saturn and saying: "Saturn, I know it is you! Why are you doing this to me? I thought I was in-tune with you." Though now I see the fallacy of my thought but at the time, I thought this was a legitimate inquiry! Saturn however only said: 'hahahahahahahahahahhahhahaha". On and on and on. Saturn only laughed for about 2 minutes. Have you ever had Saturn or God laugh at you? It's quite an alarming situation. After about 2 minutes he stopped and I was sitting there quite embarrassed, but in that humble moment I thought, .... "okay, what do you want from me?" And then Saturn only said 2 words, ....."more silence"........."more silence......."....... "more silence......." That began my real understanding and appreciation of Saturn. I may have thought I understand 'him' before, but not I was to begin in earnest to truely, understand. And, now, I'd received a kind of mantra....."more silence"....... Over the next few years, as I looked at my life I realized two things. As much as I thought what silence was, I still could have 'more' of it! So, whenever I found myself in a Saturnish type of experience, instead of struggling against it, I began to let go. I surrendered, I let go of my way, my thinking, and my feelings, and accepted that here, too, I might allow myself to gravitate towards more silence. Fortunately, I'd already had about 20 years of meditating so I knew quite a bit about this process of developing more silence. But, now, I was to think that I still needed more! Fortunately, too, I also had an idea of how deeply silent I could become. In the Philosophy of Vedic Yoga, it's well known that the full potential of one's inner silence is literally 'infinite'. In fact, Consciousness, sometimes, in it's fully developed state, is described in terms of absolute silence! Always still, ever refreshing, enlivened, 24 hour bliss, deep, deep silence, as the nature of one's pure consciousness, .... These descriptions went a long way at helping me realize I, too, even after years of meditation, still could have more! Now, however, I was truely motivated to change. I didn't want another 12 years of the Saturn grief like the last 4 years, so I was highly motivated to change! Maybe that's another important part of our growth towards self-improvement; we really have to want it! We may say we do, but at some point, we really realize, we want that something! Now I understand, that the Philosophy of Malefics, has another important function in addition to just being indicative of our negative karmas. The Philosophy of Malefics is also about our specific, precise, very personal areas in which we were born to improve ourselves. The Malefics not only represent our weaknesses, but, they also represent those areas that are our areas of opportunities. Understanding that for every negative, there might be a blessing there, in disguise, is a powerful insight gained from Astrology. For example, if we're experiencing accidents, and/or physical rashes, or too many people are angry at us...... we can blame situations, or the environment, but at some point we get it. "Oh, I have Mars where in my chart?" An astrologer may help us understand that the various negatives of Mars are due to 'our' Mars, and this indeed, is the first real step of self-improvement! Mars typically likes to blame others. But, since we know understand, better, the law of karma, we have to accept our responsibility. Understanding that our various, negative 'karmas', are due to the specific, and precise Mars, in our charts, is that first step. Later we begin to wonder, "Is there anything else I can do, to change this?" Then we begin looking into these various "Jyotish remedies", which are becoming even more popular, today. For Mars there are mantras we can recite, there are gems we can wear. I even know people, who found specific 'pitta' pacifying remedies from Ayurved, which seem to help the body, especially, become less fiery. Then there is the element of Vedic Psychology that understands that our various 'pitta' of Marish karmas, are due to our own thought patterns. Even modern (Western) Psychology, today, understands that we are the one's that are sabotaging ourselves. Understanding that the Mars in our charts, is a reflection of the unique and precise thought pattern that we have created from our past karmas, is a very important self-improvement step! Because if it's really true that we created this, or the configuration in our chart, then, maybe, just maybe, we have the power to re-create, this thing. So, we begin a journey of self-exploration, to see, if indeed, we can change ourselves, through understanding and then, through self-effort, at changeing that Marish side of us, that's so far, lead us to accidents, or fights, or heat rashes. Anger, fire, standing up for ourselves, these are just a few of Mars' unique attributes. We're obviously not supposed to be a door mat, but maybe, our chart is trying to tell us, that we're meant to become slightly less Marish! Or, in terms of Ayurved, maybe, we're meant to balance that very highly, out of balance, Pitta, energy, that's there, even in our pulses. So, we try it, we take the idea and understanding of our Mars, whether, it's in the first house, or 7th, or with our Sun, or Mercury's, we #1 Understand, that 'that' configuration may be the reason why we're having this or that Mars problem. But, now, we begin the process of thinking differently. "Maybe it's not really others fault, but maybe it's 'I', that needs to change. So, we try it. We take the first step, at diminishing the Mars intensity. We take to heart, more the philosophy of turning the other cheek! We entertain the belief in compromise, in forgiveness, and leave the intense World of anger, fire, and revenge. Only we can take this journey. But, we've already learned that Jyotish works! That's very inspiring, because this understanding, already, creates in us, a receptivity to moving into a better inner world. Our charts, in fact, are how the 'Guru' sees us. We may not see ourselves this way, but Jyotish, or the Guru, looks at us, differently. These are your strengths, and these are your weaknesses, your negatives, or areas to change! Before this, we might have thought, "ahhhh, they are the problem". This is the classic problem of kuja dosha. Over 40% of people have one variety of this negative Mars configuration. Mars, in the lst, 4th, 7th & 12th houses, especially, all directly influence the 7th house of marriage and partnerships. All manners of Marish grief can be found when Mars' kuja dosha is the situation. Remembering, however, that this configuration, too, is just the karmic situation that we were born with; and we have the power to change our thought habits and inclinations, is key! All we need to do, is take the first step. I remember when one man came to get Jyotish, marriage counseling. Actually, his 4th wife was dragging him to the session. His first words, even, were: "Listen,....don't blame me, it's my wife that's the real problem!" Right away, even before I looked at his chart, I heard Mars! He was blaming someone else, which is that classic Mars delusion. So, I wasn't too surprised to find he had Mars, smack in the middle of his 7th house. My biggest challenge was in trying to help him see that in fact, it was really 'him'.... that was the problem. I started by saying, "I'm sure your wife has something to do with it. You know it takes 2, to make a problem. But, let's look at your chart first. And, this is your 4th marriage, right?" "Ya, but they all!, were the problem." Well, at least I planted a seed there. "Okay, well, in looking at your chart, I find what is called the classic Mars, kuja dosha, going on." He said: "I've heard of that. What does that mean?" "Well, it means a number of things. Number one, it means you will attract Marish situations, in your partnerships!" "Well, you're certainly right there." "Also, it sometimes means that, that very Mars, is the filter through which you see your relations or partners. For example, when your wife comes into the room, do you find yourself getting irritable?" "Hey,....that's right." "Well, that's not just her fault. She's really just the messenger, of your karma. Having Mars in your 7th house of partnerships, means you have this karma, of Marish interactions." "You have that right." "Okay, not take it a step deeper. Understand then, that 'they' are really just the messengers. Your karmas, here, really start with yourself. Though I notice over here, you also have a very good Venus." In fact, he had a great Venus. In his 10th house his Venus was in it's Own sign, and he had already told me how well appreciate he is at work. "This is very good, because it shows you, that you can be appreciative, and successful, in inter- personal relations. You are well appreciated, even loved at work. Now, my #1 prescription for you, is for you to bring this good ability, to your 7th house of marriage. For 2 weeks, I want you to not go immediately to the war chest, but to flow through the better Venus energies like you know how to do, at work." He didn't look very convinced, after all this was his 4th marriage. But, there was a glimmer of hope there in his eyes. "Okay,.....I'll try." I didn't hear from him for three weeks, and when he called the first thing he said was: "ahhhh, Mark, ..... ahhh,....I don't think it's going....to....." And, then he stated laughing profusely, and in between his whole heartily belly laughter he said: "My wife thinks I can't do anything wrong!" He continued laughing.... "Great,...tell me what happened." "Well, I didn't think it would work, but I tried what you said. Every time I saw her, and spoke to her, I tried to find something nice to say. Like you said, I tried to appreciate her more. And, the first 5 times, she looked really suspicious, hehehe. But, then after about a week, she began to soften. She began to even look at me differently, and after 2 weeks, it began to be even, well,....nice...... I didn't call you this last week, cuz I just wanted to make sure it was real. But, now, I know it is!" Like this, every malefic situation in our lives, as in our charts, is there, for us, as our grand, opportunities for personal growth. These same malefics, which are so often thought of as our 'curses', are in fact, the very opportunities for our self-development. Each malefic, in fact, represents the very precise, and exact area of our selves, and our personal natures, that we're meant to growth within. As we then, begin to think differently, in any of these malefic situations, we too, will find joy and surprising, relief and happiness in even the most troublesome, and sad situations. This is the real nature of the Malefics, in Jyotish. They're not just symbolic of our problems, but are in fact, deeply symbolic of exactly how we're meant to improve or change. As we make these steps, we will have really achieved the real purpose of our lives. We were born to live our benefic strengths, but, we were also meant to discover, and transform ourselves, in the very ways of our malefics! Unfortunately, this Philosophy of human nature is not well understood, so you will not get much encouragement from your friends, family, or environment. But, the extent to which you, already, have seen the various truths of Jyotish, let this encourage you, to try this new insight about the very depressing, and cloud overshadowing areas of your malefics. Our malefics, in fact, are our best friends. They are presently, in our face, just so we learn to put better attention on what we truely, need to learn. As we take even a few steps into this new world, we'll be amazed at how wonderful, positive, and how much goodness can come to us! Sincerely, Mark Kincaid Jai Guru!
