Respected List Members ,

Please advise how to choose a fasting day on Full and New Moon.

Should we use a day from sunrise to the next sunrise or from mid-night to

the next mid-night, and look for Amavasya and Purnima in that time? Is

any text about that in Internet?

Thanks in advance,

Youry

Dear Youry,

According to Hindu scriptures, day begins at sunrise.

Now the definition of sunrise is hotly debated to be between the following

contenders

1. Tip of the Sun on the eastern horizon

2. Mid point of the Sun

3. Apperent position cosidering refraction, time of chirping of birds etc.

However for fasting purposes you may consider sunrise to mark the day

check out this link http://www.saatwik.com/pages/fasting.html

Hope this helps

Dear Soumit,

Thank you very much for your reply, but I didn't found the answer on the

web-site, which you gave me.

If we have a sunrise at 6 am, but astronomical New Moon at 8 am or 5 PM in

the same day, when have we to start our fasting? At 6 AM this day or at 6

AM in the next day? When have we to start the New Moon fasting, if we have

astronomical New Moon at 5:45 AM?

What is Full Moon time? When Moon has 180 degree to Sun or in sunset of

that day?

Sorry if I ask silly questions, but I can't find that information

elsewhere.

Sincerely yours,

Youry

Dear Youry,

In the event that the switch were to occour any time after the

flight of birds (governed by sun) then I would do that day and the next

included, and have meals after sunset.

Your question does raise issues which I will consult my gurus and give you a

feedback on

Meanwhile though painfull and somewhat unnecessary, fast is always good. A study

on rats revealed that rats fed 50% of their supposed caolorific diet lived 50%

longer. Furthermore rats that were fed normal until midlife and then reduced to

50% still continued their longevity ternd proving that it is never to late.

These are the reslts of the wasteful pending of tax $$$ which may still carry

some value.

So fast both days for good measure. And if you are fat then it works really

well. You cannot ever go wrong this way. IMHO

Dear Soumit,

Thanks a lot for your reply. I’m fasting at least for 7-8 days a month

for the last several years. I started fasting from 1981 and have had

full permanent fasting with water only for 7 days and more (with some

juice and fruits for 14 days +). That is not question for me now.

I’ve met another problem – the correctness of the time for fasting. I

found a good explanation for the Ekadashi, but can’t find the same for

the Full/New Moon fasting. I think you are right, that if we have

astronomical Full/New Moon exactly after sunrise, we have to fast for 2

days. The same, if we have Full/New Moon exactly before sunrise. I

would like to have a confirmation from the Learned Members and Gurus.

>From your suggestion the new question is arisen: When do we have to have

one day fasting for the Full/New Moon and when the one day only? Or

should we have always perform the 2 day fasting? If yes, why do we have

a lot of fasting calendars with 1 day fasting for Full/New Moon?

Sincerely yours and Jai Guru Dev,

Youry
