Dear Sri Chandrashekar,

The analysis has been done according to the principles of Jaimini. The three

compositions regarding Ayurdaya are

a) Aayuh Pitrudinesabhyam (Lagna and 8th lords)

b) Evam mandachandrabhyam (Lagna and Moon)

c) Pitrukalatascha (Lagna and Hora Lagna)

Prof. Rao gives the same in his translation of Jaimini Suturas. He has

discussed other methods of determining longevity in Brihat Jataka.

There are different versions of "Rule of Three". A common one which I found

to be quite reliable is

a) Lagna Drekanna and Chandra Drekanna

b) Lagna Navamsa and Chandra Navamsa

c) Lagna Dwadasamsa and Chandra Dwadasamsa

A mention of this is made in Paladeepika.

I came across another version of "Rule of Three" while interacting with a

few scholars which is as follows:

a) Signs occupied by Lagna Lord and 8th Lord

b) Sign occupied by Saturn and Moon

c) Lagna and 8th from Karakamsa

I second your statement of Saturn's strong position. The best way to judge

the longevity, in my humble opinion, would be to consider the strength of

the horoscope and placement of key planets.

Re: [astrocasual] Longevity Analysis

Dear Ramana Suprajarama,

May I know why you have not considered Saturn and Moon in longevity

estimates? Not that it gives Purnaayu. Only that if I remember right B.

Suryanarain Rao did give that pair also for analysis for longevity. Or am I

forgetting something?

In Dr. Raman's Horoscope, perhaps the aspect of Lagnesh on Lagna gave him

long life, especially as Saturn is Ayushkaraka. Of course I could be wrong.

Regards,

Chandrashekhar.

It was a sad event when Pope John Paul II left his physical body on April 2,

principles.

Lagna Lord and 7th lord are in each others house. Saturn is strong in the

11th and 10th lord Moon is in the 8th. Long life is indicated. If we apply

the Rule of three,

Lagna Lord and 8th Lord Venus is in a movable Sign - Poornayus

Lagna and Moon are in Movable and Fixed signs respectively - Madhyayus

Lagna and Hora Lagna are in Movable and Fixed signs respectively - Madhyayus

One can conclude that since (b) and © are Madhayus, the same is indicated.

But we should also take into consideration the strong position of Jupiter,

in the 10th house (exalted) leading to Hamsa Yoga.

Apart from the Rule of three, it would be helpful to check for the following

condition.

Lords of the 8th from Atmakaraka and 8th from 7th (effectively 2nd) from

Atmakaraka. If these lords occupy Kendra, Panapara and Apoklima houses,

long, medium and short life is indicated respectively.

In Pope's horoscope, Atmakaraka is mercury. He occupies Aries. 8th house

from him is Scorpio, whose lord is in a Kendra. 2nd house from Mercury is

Taurus whose lord is again in a Kendra. Hence long life is indicated.

The timeframe for Short, Medium and Long Life of man is as follows:

0-33 years - Short Life

33-66 years - Medium Life

66-100 years - Full Life

Having ascertained the rough life span of a native, one can further fine

tune it. The combination of planets that indicate the lifespan are

considered. In the above case, Lagna lord and 8th lord Venus cause

Poornayus.

Venus has passed 23.55 degrees. The amount of years contributed by Venus

will be equal to the portion it has traversed in that sign. The years

contributed by Venus is (23.55/30) * 33 years = 25.91 years. Since the life

span is Poornayus, Base is taken as 66 years and the contribution of Venus

is added ie 66+25.91 = 91.91 years. This will be the maximum longevity of

the native. If two planets are involved, then the average of the years

contributed by each are taken and added to the Base.

Further refinement can be done by checking the position of Saturn, Rahu or

Ketu from Lagna or Atmakaraka. If they happen to be in the 7th, then death

will take place in the first, second or the third portion of the timeframe.

Here Ketu is in the 7th from Lagna and Rahu is in the 7th from Atmakaraka.

Ketu's position is considered as there are more planets with him and hence

stronger. Death is likely to take place in the third portion of the

timeframe ie 83 years to 92 years. If the above planet was Saturn, then

death would have taken place in the first 1/3rd portion ie (66-75 years).

Shoola Dasa is the best Dasa to judge Longevity.

Dasa - The signs belonging to 2nd and 8th can cause Death. Death can also

occur in Dasas of signs which are Trines to the 8th house ie 12th and 4th

house.

Antardasa - Death can take place in the Rasi occupied by Rudra (ie strongest

among the lords of 2nd and 8th). It can take place in the antardasa of 8th

from Karakamsa or its trines. It can occur in the sign which is 8th from

Atmakaraka.

The strongest among these should be considered.

When the pope passed away, Capricorn Dasa - Sagittarius Antardasa was

running. Capricorn is a trine to the 8th house. Sagittarius is a trine to

the 8th from Karakamsa.

Let us consider the horoscope of my revered grandfather Dr. B. V. Raman and

determine the longevity.

Step (1)

Lagna lord and 8th lord are in fixed signs - Alpayus

Lagna and Moon are in fixed signs - Alpayus

Lagna and Hora Lagna are in Fixed and Common sign - Poornayus

Step (2)

On could have predicted short life, but we can verify it with our second

principle. Lords of 8th and 2nd are in Kendra. Full Life is indicated.

Step (3)

Combination causing full life is Lagna and Hora Lagna (from Step (1)). Lagna

is 17.78 degrees and Hora Lagna is 20.93 degrees respectively. Contribution

from Lagna is (17.78/30)*33 = 19.56 years. Contribution from Hora Lagna is

(20.93/30)*33 = 23.02 years. Their average is 21.3 years. The maximum life

span will be 87.29 years.

He left us on December 20th, 1998 at the age of 86. According to Shoola

Dasa, Taurus-Sagittarius was running. Taurus is a trine to the 8th house.

Sagittarius is 8th from Atmakaraka.

Dear Sri Chandrashekar,

Dr. Raman has considered Saturn for Manda. In my own small capacity of

understanding Jaimini sutras, the house/bhava is coded with Katapayadi rules

while planets are stated directly.

Re: [astrocasual] Longevity Analysis

Dear Ramana Suprajarama,

Yes that is true. I think even BPHS says Saturn and Chandra, if memory

serves me right. I have always wondered why B. Suryanarain Rao translated it

like that as else where he has translated Manda as Saturn and Jaimini too

says na grahaH. All planetary names have, always, been translated as such

and not by applying Ka ta Pa Ya Di rules. I remember Dr. B.V.Raman had done

further research on Jaimini. Could you kindly, let me know how he has

interpreted this?

Regards,

Chandrashekhar.
