Guest guest
Friends, 25th January was a very busy day when Earth shook in more places far flung all over. Details are as follows. EQ#16 Multiple offshore quakes off Ecuador's coast spark fears of tsunami By Gonzalo Salano January 25, 2005 Eighty offshore earthquakes that have rattled Ecuador's Pacific coast over a five-day period do not signal an impending giant quake or tsunami, the director of the nation's Geophysics Institute said Tuesday, reassuring worried Ecuadoreans. EQ#17 A magnitude-6 quake struck at 6:23 p.m. (2323 GMT) Monday night, 40 kilometers (25 miles) west of the coastal city of Manta, 260 kilometers (160 miles) southwest of the capital, Quito. EQ#18 Magnitude 5.9 - TURKEY-IRAQ BORDER REGION 2005 January 25 16:44:11 UTC Preliminary Earthquake Report U.S. Geological Survey, National Earthquake Information Center World Data Center for Seismology, Denver A moderate earthquake occurred at 16:44:11 (UTC) on Tuesday, January 25, 2005. The magnitude 5.9 event has been located in the TURKEY-IRAQ BORDER REGION. The hypocentral depth was poorly constrained. (This event has been reviewed by a seismologist.) While no damage or injuries were reported, it was the strongest of a series of undersea earthquakes that started last Thursday, and sparked panic among hundreds of people in several coastal communities. Event #19 Magnitude 5.5 - KURIL ISLANDS 2005 January 25 18:54:29 UTC Preliminary Earthquake Report U.S. Geological Survey, National Earthquake Information Center World Data Center for Seismology, Denver A moderate earthquake occurred at 18:54:29 (UTC) on Tuesday, January 25, 2005. The magnitude 5.5 event has been located in the KURIL ISLANDS. (This event has been reviewed by a seismologist.) May God show mercy on people. EARTHQUAKE #14 Mon 24 Jan 2005 8:30am (UK) Strong Earthquake Strikes Near Indian Islands A strong earthquake struck today near the remote Nicobar islands off southern India, which have recently been jolted by aftershocks from a giant quake that ravaged vast areas of South Asia, Hong Kong seismologists said. The 6.3-magnitude quake hit near the islands in the Bay of Bengal at 12.22pm (0422 GMT), the Hong Kong Observatory said. The tremor's epicentre was about 1,081 miles south east of Calcutta, the observatory said. -------------------------------- EARTHQUAKE # 15 JAKARTA, Jan. 24 (Xinhuanet) -- An earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale shook the Indonesian province of Aceh Monday, the second quake within four hours in the province where over 170,000 people were killed in the earthquake-triggered tsunami on Dec. 26. The Antara news agency reported the quake occurred at 11:16 local time (0416GMT), around four hours after a 5.2-magnitude quake jolted the province. The epicenter was located 355 km northwest of provincial capital Banda Aceh, it quoted report from the local meteorology and geophysics agency. There is no immediate report of casualty.
