However, Çanideva himself has devised a way of solving this problem by obtaining the blessings of Lord Nåsiàha. Çani made an agreement with the Lord that he would never trouble those who recite his Nåsiàha Stuti when they are facing troubles related to dvädaça-añöama-païcama (a situation where Çani-käta lasts for 7 ½ births ) If one recites with devotion Çani's Çré Nåsiàha Stuti, especially on Çanivära (Saturdays) and when Çani graha traverses to 12-8-5 janma räçi, in marana sthana, in AL or through the 10th House, one will please the Lord who is the Supersoul of Çanaiçcara and the Lord will remove all obstacles and suffering and bless His devotee. sulabho bhakti yuktänäà durdarço duñöa cetasäà | ananya gatikänäm ca prabhu bhaktaika-vatsalaù çanaiçcara tatra nåsiàha-deva cakärämala-citta-våtiù | praëamya ñañöäìgam açeça-loka kiréta néräjita päda-padmam || 1 | Lord Nåsiàhadeva is easily accessible to the devotees and punishes those who are evil-minded. He is the savior for those who are helpless who desire to seek refuge in Him. When the demigods of innumerable planets bow down to His lotus feet, the bright jewels from their crowns are reflected on His toenails which gives the impression that lamps are being waved in front of them. O Lord Nåsiàha, please bestow upon me Your merciful side-long glance. yad rüpam ägama-çiraù pratipädhyamädhya | ädhyätmikädi paritäpa haram vicintyam || yogéçvarair apathagäkhila doña saìghaiù | sa tvam nåsiàha mayi dehi kåpä-valokam ||4|| By contemplating or meditating upon Your appearance, which is expounded in the Vedas extensively, the best of the saints are liberated from the three-fold miseries and from all misfortunes. O Lord Nåsiàha, please bestow upon me Your merciful side-long glance. prahläda bhakta vacasä harir äviräsa | stambhe hiraëyakaçipuà ya udhärabhävaù || urvau nidhäya udharam nakhärai dadhära | sa tvam nåsiàha mayi dehi kåpä-valokam ||5|| By the word of His devotee named Prahläda, Lord Hari, who is generous and kind, appeared from a pillar and by placing Hiraëyakaçipu on His thighs split open the his stomach with His nails. O Lord Nåsiàha, please bestow upon me Your merciful side-long glance. yo naija bhaktaà analämbudhi bhüdharogra | çåëga-prapäta viça dhamti sarésupebhyaù | sarvätmakaù parama-käruëiko rarakña | sa tvam nåsiàha mayi dehi kåpä-valokam ||6|| You protected your own devotee Prahläda from a raging fire, the deep ocean, from falling from a tall mountain peak, poison, a mad elephant and the fangs of poisonous serpents. You are omnipresent and supremely generous. O Lord Nåsiàha, please bestow upon me Your merciful side-long glance. yannirvikära para-rüpa vicintanena | yogéçvarä viçaya sägara véta rägäù || viçrämtim äpura-vinäça vatéà paräkhyäà | sa tvam nåsiàha mayi dehi kåpä-valokam ||7|| By meditating upon He whose great form is devoid of imperfections, the best of the saints attained liberation from the ocean of materialistic attachments and obtained unmitigated salvation. O Lord Nåsiàha, please bestow upon me Your merciful side-long glance. yad rüpam-ugra parimardana bhäva çäli | saàcintanena sakalägha vinäça käri | bhüta jvara graha samudbhava bhéti näçam | sa tvam nåsiàha mayi dehi kåpä-valokam ||8|| By meditating upon He whose form is fearsome, all peace, happiness and prosperity can be obtained, all sins can be obliterated, the fear arising from evil spirits, fevers and unfavorable planetary positions can be removed, O Lord Nåsiàha, please bestow upon me Your merciful side-long glance. yasyottamaà yaça umä-patim padma-janma | çakrädi daivata sabhäsu samasta-gétam || çaktaiva sarvaça-mala praçamaika dakñam | sa tvam nåsiàha mayi dehi kåpä-valokam ||9|| Your transcendental fame is sung gloriously in all the divine assemblies of Çiva, Brahmä and Indra etc. and whose power is steadfast in wiping out all impurities, O Lord Nåsiàha, please bestow upon me Your merciful side-long glance. evam çrutvä stutià devaù çaninäà kalpitäà hariù | uväca brahma våndasta çanià taà bhakta-vatsalaù ||10|| On listening to the heartfelt prayer composed by Çanideva in the assembly of Lord Brahmä, Lord Hari who is ever compassionate to His devotees, spoke to Çanideva as follows. çré nåsiàha uväca - prasannoham çane tubhyaà | varam varaya çobhanaà || yaà väïchasi tameva tvam | sarva-loka hitävaham ||11|| Çré Nåsiàha said - O Çani, I am pleased with your devotion. What ever you desire that will benefit the world, ask for that kind of boon and I will grant it. çré çanir uväca - nåsiàha tvam mayi kåpäm kuru deva dayä-nidhe | mad väsaras tava préti- kara syat devatä-pate ||12|| mat kåtam tvat param stotraà çåëvanti ca paöanti ca | sarvän käman pürayetäs teçäm tvaà loka-bhävanaù ||13|| Çré Çanideva replied - O Lord Nåsiàha, O reservoir of compassion, please be kind to me. O Lord of all gods, let my week-day (Saturday) be Your favorite day. O Purifier of all the worlds, may You fulfill the desires of all those who listen to or read this great prayer to You composed by me." çré nåsiàha uväca - tataivästu çaneham vai rakño-bhuvana saàsthitaù | bhakta kämän pürayiçye tvaà mamaika vacaù çåëu || tvat kåtam mat param stotram yaù paöecchåëu yäccha yaù | dvädaçäñöama janmastäd bhayaà mästu tasya vai ||14|| Çré Nåsiàha said - O Çani, let it be so! By virtue of My being the universal protector (rakñobhuvana), I fulfill the desires of all My devotees. Please listen to My words -let there be no fear of the twelfth and eighth birth positions (and implicitly any unfavorable birth positions) and consequent troubles from you for any one who reads or listens to this prayer to Me composed by you. çani naraharià devaà tateti pratyuväca ha tataù parama-saàtuñöo jayeti munayovadan ||15|| Then Çanideva replied to Lord Narahari that he would follow the Lord's instructions. Then the joyful saints and sages present there (in Brahma's assembly) responded with cries of, 'jaya, jaya!'". çré kåñëa uväca - itam çanaiçcarasyäta nåsiàha deva | samvädam etat stavanaà ca mänavaù || çåëoti yaù çrävayate ca bhaktyä sarvänyäbhéñöäni ca vindate dhruvam ||16|| Çré Kåñëa told Dharmaräja, "Whoever listens to or recites this conversation between Çanideva and Lord Nåsiàha in the form of this prayer of devotion will definitely have all desires fulfilled and will always rejoice." iti çré bhaviñyottara puräëe rakñobhuvana mahätme çré çanaiçcara kåta çré nåsiàha stuti sampürëam Thus ends the prayers offered to the universal protector Çré Nåsiàha by the great soul Çani. _ A Hymn to Çani as a Remover of Trouble Padma Puräëa Section VI: Uttarakhaëòa Chapter 33.1-51 Närada said: O best god, tell me how the oppression caused by Saturn goes away. A living being is freed by that which is heard from your mouth. Mahädeva said: O divine sage, listen to the account. By that you will be free from bondage. This Saturn is the lord of Planets and the great lord of all. This divinity is well-known. He is a great Planet in the form of death. He has matted hair like diamond pins and he is fearful to the demons. O lord, in this world, his account is not well known. I have especially guarded it and have not told it to anyone. Formerly in Raghu's family, there was a very famous king, Daçaratha by name. he was a sovereign emperor and a great hero. Knowing Saturn to be near Kåttikä the astrologers informed him: Now Saturn will go piercing past Rohiëé; the piercing of the cart-like shape of Rohiëé is very fierce and fearful to the gods and demons; for twelve years there will be a very severe famine. Having heard these words, the king held consultations with his ministers: "What is the fearful calamity that has come?" Seeing the world, the citizens and the distressed peasants, people everywhere said: "The end of the world has come. Regions with cities, villages have been frightened all around." The devout king asked Brähmaëas led by Vasiñöha: "O best Brähmaëas, tell me what measure should be adopted now?" Vasiñöha said: This is the star of Prajäpati. When it is pierced, where will the subjects remain? This conjunction cannot be averted even by Brahmä and Çakra etc. Thinking in his mind about a rash act, he took up his divine bow along with divine weapons, quickly got into jis chariot and went to the froup of stars numbering a lakh, and remaining over the Sun and covering a region of over a yojana and a quarter and dwelling on the back of Rohiëé. Formerly, King Daçaratha, shining with great jewels and bright with a diadem and a crown looked bright in his golden, divine chariot which was decorated with gems and jewels, to which horses having the colour of swans were yoked and which had a banner fluttering high. At that time, he shone in the sky like another Sun. having fully drawn his bow up to the ear, he fixed a missile that would destroy everything. Saturn, having seen that destructive missile causing fear to gods and demons, laughed through its fear and said these words: Saturn said: O lord of kings, your valour is great and causes fear to the enemies. O king, gods, demons, human beings, siddhas, vidyädharas, serpents, when looked at by me, are reduced to ashes. O lord of kings, I am pleased with your penance and valour. As for a boon- whatever in your mind's desire. I shall grnat it. Daçaratha said: You should never pierce Rohiëé and you should never pass through Rohiëé as long as the rivers, oceans, the Moons, the Sun and the earth shall remain. I have, O Sauri, solicited what I want. I do not desire any other boon. Granting him an eternal boon, Çani said: "Let it be so." Again, being pleased, he said: "O you of a good vow, ask for a boon." With a pleased mind, the king than solicited another boon from Saturn. He said: "O Sun's Son, you should never pierce through the cart (Rohiëé). Never cause a famine lasting for twelve years. Çani said: There shall never be a famine lasting for twelve years. This fame of yours will spread in the three worlds. The king, having obtained a couple of boons and thrilled with joy, kept his bow on the chariot and with palms joined, he meditated upon Goddess Sarasvaté and Vinäyaka, Çiva's chief attendant. Then King Daçaratha recited this hymn in praise of Çani. Daçaratha said: " My homage to Kåñëa, Nila (the dark one) To Çitikaëöhanibha ( one who resembles Çiva) To Kälägnirüpa (the form of the destructive fire) To Kåtänta (Death) My obeisance to Nirmäàsadeha (one having very little flesh on his body) To Dérghaçmasrujata (one having long moustache and beard), To Vira (having big eyes), to you having thin belly and fearful figure. My homage to Puñkalagätra (having a large body), To Sthülaroman (having thick hair), To Dérga (i.e. long), To Çuñka (i.e. dry); Salutation to Koöaräkña (having hollow-like senses), Durnirékñya (difficult to be looked at), Salutation to Ghora (i.e. fearful), To Raudra (i.e. fierce), To Bhéñaëa (i.e.terrible), To Kapälin (wearing skulls); Homage to Sarvabhakña (one consuming everything), To you, O Valimukha (one with wrinkles on your face), Salutation to you, O Sun's Son, To you O Saàvartaka (i.e. fire of destruction), To Mandagati (i.e. moving slowly), Salutation to Nistiàça (i.e.pitiless), To you whose body is burnt by penance, To you who are always engaged in abstract meditation; Constant homage to Kñudhärta (one oppressed with hunger), To Atåpta (not content); Salutation to you, the eye of knowledge, To the son of Kaçyapa's son. When you are pleased, you give a kingdom; When you are angry, you take it away in an instant." Thus praised, that very powerful king of Planets, viz. Saturn, the son of the Sun, was thrilled with joy and agin said these words to Daçaratha: "O oyu best king, of a godd vow, with this hymn of praise recited by you, I am pleased. Ask for your desired boon. I shall grant it, O descendant of Raghu." Daçaratha said: O Sauri (Sun's son), from today, you are not to cause any trouble to anyone- Gods, Demons, Men, Beasts, Birds and Serpents. Çani said: Grahas (i.e. Planets) are so called since they seize a being. They are said to cause trouble. I shall tell you about something proper which is solicited and cannot be given. A man who will recite one or twice this hymn of praise recited by you, will be free from trouble just at that instant. In the fourth existence in the end, I, having gone to death, would give death to gods, demons, human beings, siddhas, vidyädharas and goblins. On the other hand, I shall never trouble him who with faith, becomes pure and calm, worships my iron image with Çamé leaves and who would offer as a present, iron mixed with beans, rice, sesamum seeds and would give a black cow, a bull to a Brähmaëa and would especially on my day, worship me with this hymn and would, with the palms joined, recite the hymn in my honour after having worshipped me. I shall always protect him and keep away the trouble form a Planet during the Planet's influence, in the sign of the Zoadiac in which the person is born under, in the Planet's aspect or in the middle of it. By doing this and this alone, the world would be free from trouble. Thus, O descendant of Raghu, I have skillfully granted you a boon. Having obtained three boons, King Daçaratha regarded himself as successful and saluted Çani. Permitted by Çani, he speedily got into his chariot and went to his place. Then the king had obtained bliss. That man who having got up in the morning on a Saturday who recites this hymn of praise, so also the man who devoutly listens to this hymn when it is being recited, is freed from his sin and is honoured in heaven. On the other hand, I shall never trouble him who with faith, becomes pure and calm, worships my iron image with Çamé leaves and who would offer as a present, iron mixed with beans, rice, sesamum seeds and would give a black cow, a bull to a Brähmaëa and would especially on my day, worship me with this hymn and would, with the palms joined, recite the hymn in my honour after having worshipped me. I shall always protect him and keep away the trouble form a Planet during the Planet's influence, in the sign of the Zoadiac in which the person is born under, in the Planet's aspect or in the middle of it. By doing this and this alone, the world would be free from trouble.
