Mantras - Rig and Atharva Veda ( Is there any difference)

Dear Members,

 

Could anyone guide me on the difference in the mantras from Rig veda and

Atharva Veda.For instance Pasupathasthra manthra is from Rigveda whereas

Bhahulamukhi or Soolini or Durga Mantras are from Atharva veda.Now going on to

the effects all the 6 satkarmas (Santhi , Sthambhana,Marana and so on ) can be

done by both these mantras.Normally a genuine people do only tha Santhi Karma.If

all Sat karmas can be performed by both the mantras one from Rig Veda and One

from Atharva,then What exactly is the difference between these two Vedas?????/

Dear Anupama,

 

There is no difference between any Vedas - all are Vedas and compilation of

sacred shlokas. Rigveda is the oldest. The root of word "Rig" is "Rit" meanig

course. Rig Veda therefore, lays down the course of life. It may be surprising

that of 1603 shlokas of Sam Veda, 1504 are repeated from Rig Veda. Similarly in

Yajur Veda 50% shlokas are extracted from Rig Veda and as for Atharv Veda 19

Khandas are from Rig Veda.

 

Sakala Pratisakhya describes the recitation method for Rig Veda. Taittraiya and

Vajasanoyi Pratisakhyas describe recitation methods for Yajur Veda. Chaturahyayi

describes the recitation method for Atharv Veda.

 

A legend has it that Brahma received the Knowledge of Vedas from Mahavishnu and

then related it to his son.
