Incongruous Astrology -------------- 1. Introduction to Michael Laughrin's North American Jyotish Newsletter I offer you this newsletter to enhance and deepen your experience of Vedic Astrology. In these newsletters, expect to find a combination of helpful articles, book reviews, Jyotish links and more. The purpose of this newsletter is to educate and titillate the Jyotish- loving public. The opinions given within are solely those of Michael Laughrin. In this issue, we "lighten up" for the holidays with humorous lists on the twelve signs of the Zodiac: "What Each Sign of the Zodiac is Thankful For (Not!)", "Childrearing Philosophies of the Twelve Signs of the Zodiac", "The Twelve Signs of the Zodiac Plan a Date", "Women of Each Sign Discuss How to Be Sexy and Catch a Lover", and "Food Preferences of the Twelve Signs of the Zodiac". I hope you appreciate that these are entirely tongue-in-cheek and do not intend to offend. Our contributor, Jyotishi Alison Nielson, wrote some of these lists as noted. Next month, we will issue more lists in Part II. Alison Nielson provides forty Sanskrit words, plus an interesting article on Incongruous Astrology. Incongruous Astrology illustrates how the Jyotish chart influences our sub-personalities, sometimes putting us in conflict with ourselves. Please visit my website at http://www.jyotish.ws at your convenience. I offer Traditional/Classical Vedic Astrology, Intuitional Jyotish (Vedic Astrology based on deep intuition), Chakra Readings, and Advanced Structured Psychic Work (for deeper interpretation of your karmic pattern). Incongruous Astrology By Alison Nielsen (premavratini) We humans like to think of ourselves as having well-knit personalities that function with an automatic unity through all circumstances. The fact of the matter is that we all have sub- personalities. These sub-personalities rise to the fore depending on the predominating internal and external forces in operation. Sometimes these sub-personas leave us thinking, "I really don't know WHO did that, even though I remember it was me," or "How could I?" Then, one of our sub-personas lectures another sub-persona. We are all subject to multiple drives and forces and multiple layers of being. One way of viewing these forces and layers in Jyotish is via the lagna/lagnesha, the sun and the moon. In Jyotish, the lagna and lagnesha and any influencing planets represent the mundane personality; the moon and any influencing planets represent the emotional mind; and the sun and any influencing planets represent the soul. Of course, all the grahas come to bear on the personality one way or another, but sun moon and lagna are primary. If these three harmonize well in a horoscope, natives are likely to go far in their endeavors because they will have a well developed internal unity that keeps them moving in the same track the vast majority of the time. For instance, Ramakrishna Paramahamsa had the sun and the moon conjoined in his Aquarius lagna, which gave his life mission great force and consistency. Others of us are not so lucky and experience conflicting tugs and moods in our nature. This can lead to some hilariously incongruent personality features, part of what make life and people interesting. Following is an illustrative example of an incongruent personality at work. I call the following horoscope, "Ruling the World with an Iron Fist of Compassion." Planetary positions are as follows: Sagittarius lagna, MeR in 1st Ra in 3rd Ju in 4th Mo in 6th Ke in 9th Ma and Sa in 10th Ve in 11th Su in 12th The first impulse present in this personality is an intense drive toward humanitarian ideals and a deep feeling of the worth of all beings, demonstrated by a swa Jupiter, planet of humanitarianism in the 4th house of family/community as the lagna lord. This makes the individual want to be kind and generous, and to uplift the poor. The second equally powerful drive springs from the combination of Mars and Saturn in the 10th influencing Jupiter in the fourth. To quote Narendra Desai, "Saturn in the tenth always makes a dictator, and a spicy one when Mars conjoins." Because Saturn aspects both the house of the sub-conscious mind (12) and the house of the heart (4) and sits in the kurukshetra (battlefield of life), such people tend to be unable to listen to the advice of others and tend to be both rigid and bossy with little concern for the needs of those closest to them. The possessor of the above horoscope embodies both dynamics, as illustrated in one episode with the Dalai Lama. His Holiness gave a beautiful talk on compassion and when he was done, the horoscope owner turned to the persons nearest them and shouted, "Did you hear what he said. You really need to learn to be more compassionate." Somehow, the lesson of applying that compassion was translated into a dictatorial order to others to do so, the irony of which was utterly lost on the delivering party. Another incongruous combo comes from the following Leo chart. Su in Pisces with Me Mo in Gemini with Rahu Ju and Ve in Aries Sa and Ma in Aquarius A good title could be "Going Gucci in the Ascetic Ashram." The owner of this chart suffers from myriad pulls on her personality. Firstly, her lagnesha is conjoined with Mercury in the eighth house of classical and occult knowledge, making a budhaditya yoga that drives her in the direction of deep study and mastery of hatha yoga and the Raj Yoga Sutras. Secondly, Mars and Saturn aspect her lagna, giving her iron discipline when it comes to intense physical exercise and prolonged fasting. But the Moon in the eleventh with Rahu gives a strong contemporary social drive that causes the native to intermittently visit very expensive restaurants and nightclubs. Furthermore, because Leos incline in the direction of fancy dress and the ninth house also rules dignity of appearance, this person has a fabulously expensive, tasteful and flashy wardrobe. Periods of tremendous isolation are followed by periods of equally intense "out on the town" socializing in her best party outfits. It is often these tension-generating paradoxes that drive a human being deeper into spiritual realization. It is our own duality that helps us discover the non-dual, as we must open beyond our own incongruities to find the place that holds both as true and acceptable. The most universal divine quality is universality. Our own changing sub-personas can be a useful contrast to helping us find the unchangeable within, the part of our being that remains the same regardless of what modality we are expressing in. The discovery of that sameness can be used to unify us evermore until life is really all Eka Rasa, the one taste of Divine Bliss. -------------- Michael Laughrin's North American Jyotish Newsletter http://www.jyotish.ws Michael Laughrin, Michael, business phone: (440) 582- 9848; cell phone: (440) 263-2159 To , send an email to: jyotish_ws- Articles from past issues of this newsletter are archived at: http://www.jyotish.ws/wisdom Please feel free to share the newsletter with anyone for whom you think it may be appropriate.
