Dear JR team,

Very glad at the opportunity to write to all of you again.

Request all of your advice & tips for a beginner who wants to learn astrology,

i have been thinking the past few days & even downloaded few basics, which i

have been trying to read & understand.

to be honest, its daunting & a bit over-whelming

as mentioned, i seek your expert advice or tips alongwith your blessings.

few friends in the group also encouraged me,

so with lot of nervousness, self-doubts & apprehension i write to all of you, do

help me.

i remember our dear shri RR who says its best to learn to fish.

hope i wont be swept away... the currents are indeed fast & deep :-)

sincerely,

Manju

Don't take my words too literally, Manju. You may not like the smell

I have written about this in articles written earlier and recently, so

will save the bandwidth of this list. Each journey is different, as

you know ... talking about technical astrology and example horoscopes

is a better pursuit, I think.

My dear Manju,

As I mentioned to you, your horoscope shows natural ability in

astrology, so you should do well. Yes, it is overwhelming :-) but I

am sure you will do fine. Just don't expect to learn everything all

at once, you have to learn to count to 10 first, before you can

tackle differential calculus. So one thing you need is patience.

You will notice that there are lots and lots of rules in astrology,

and that can be really difficult. My strategy is to understand the

logic and the principles behind the rules, and apply that first to

get a general impression first. Later, I go to the classics to find

the exact reference, if necesary. In other words, you do need a good

memory, but you also need to apply your intelligence to astrology.

Another attribute that is not often mentioned, is courage. A piece of

advice that I read somewhere was to not use your own horoscope for

your studies. I did not follow this advice :-), and I don't regret

that at all. BUT you have to be prepared to deal with any negative

aspects or events that you find out. For example, one of the first

things I found out was that, according to 3 different methods of

calculations, my longevity came out consistently to be 35. Needless

to say, that was not a very pleasing thought! I am happy to say that

I was wrong :-), since I am still here at 36 - I had neglected to

delve deeper into the subject, and there were exceptions to the rules

I studied. This may be an extreme example, but the point is that you

need to be detached and brave. Enjoy the good you find and deal with

the bad. You will find both in every single chart you study. And,

while we are on the subject, never answer anyone's questions of life

and death, or of longevity until you are a TOTAL expert, because of

the impact this could have on the native, if the news is bad.

Along with courage, you also need compassion, if this is someone

else's chart that you are reading. Many people get scared when you

tell them about anything negative. Understand this, and try to

present negative aspects in a caring manner, and also suggest any

remedies if you can. Be sure to point out the positives too.

Finally, there is faith. I know there is a lot of debate around the

role of faith/devotion/spirituality in astrology. My personal opinion

is that it matters a lot, not just in astrology but in all aspects of

life. Applying rules is one step, analyzing all the various factors

to come to conclusions is the next step, and using spiritual insight

to hone those conclusions is the final step to being a great

astrologer.

I have to go now, but I will send you mail later about the books and

resources I am using. As I told you before, I am just a student

myself, so take this posting with a grain of salt :-) - this is just

my humble opinion, but hopefully some of it will help you.

Best wishes,

your Didi :-)

Dear Lata didi,

Thanks for this very wonderful & insightful mail :-)

looks like the journey is going to be more exciting than the destination.

( gosh, if u werent an astrologer besides u'r job, i'm sure u'd ended up a

writer instead, great language)

Thanks all ... btw just wondering, how many of the 2000+ who joined

for readings took up astrology ??

even a 10% strike means 200 ! wow ! that really is a great #.

End of thread from me.. Cheers & god bless.
