The below is the final series of the article on Shaligram Shila. The

previous parts can be viewed on messages 7296 and 7390.

Though the Salagrama may be identified by markings as particular

form of Vishnu, he may also be worshipped as ones chosen deity, for

all forms reside in the Salagrama. In a temple the Salagrama may be

worshipped separately or worshipped along with the murti forms,

or worshipped

Those which contain a tortoise or hoof or the cow are called VARAHA.

Yellow ones represent the devas, Red ones are UGRA-RUPA and represent

Narasimha and are capable of giving Moksa. A Salagrama with a conch

inside is called VAMAMANA. A large one with a discus inside is

called DAMODARA. If the forehead of a salagrama has the appearance of

a serpents hood or golden shine then it is called VAMADEVA.

Various results have been mentioned which are caused by certain

types of salagramas;

1. the shape of an umbrella will make one a powerful man.

2. A circular shape will give great wealth.

3. One with a flat nose will bring grief.

4. one with a pointed or sharp edge will lead to conflict.

But nowadays it is considered that a salagrama is never inauspicious

even if cleaved, burnt or defaced.

The worship of Salagrama does not call for elaborate puja, not even

mantras or sacred water are necessary. Usually the salagrama shila is

worshipped with the purusa suktam, and tulsi leaves and its presence

at Sraddha ceremonies is most pleasing to the souls of the ancestors.

"All the sins including brahmahatya and those accruing from

activities of the mind, words and body, all are instantly destroyed

by the worship of the salagrama shila."

In the Padma Purana Lord Siva declares the greatness of salagrama

shila as follows;

"The merit obtained by seeing and worshipping hundreds of

thousands of My Lingams, is equivalent to that obtained by

worshipping one single salagrama sila."

So as we wait for the God Kalki to arrive (the Maha Avatara (Great

Avatar) of God Vishnu, the Preserver, who will come to end the

current Kali Yuga) we all can pray to God Vishnu in the form of great

Saligram Shila for ultimate moksha . And as rightly said God will

come from the sky on a white horse, brandishing a flaming sword with

which to destroy the wicked people of the current world, renew

creation and bring righteousness back to Earth.
