Guest guest
A large group like this is a perfect place for a survey like this. It is a shame that in general only about 20 people out of the large number of listed members respond here (4-5 when it comes to quizes!). The sheer amount of untapped resources and thoughts due to non-participation is mind-boggling, but I suppose not all can be as interested, passionate and participatory in matters astrological, particularly technical as we would want them to! So how about a very neutral, non-threatening topic like this? Please respond to these simple questions: a) Which jyotish software do you regularly use? b) How long have you used it for? c) In the last 5-7 years what other jyotish software have you used? d) What is the best feature you like in your current software? e) Name ONE feature or option you would like to be added or improved in your software. In my case, I have been using Parashara's Light for the last many (>6) years. Before that I gave Goravani's (1.89 and 1.92) a try. I have also tried PC Jyotish, Visual Jyotish, a couple of other insignficant packages whose names I forget and a few demo versions. My first computer software (what a paradigm shift that was decades ago from paper and pencil, ephemeris and table of prop. logs way of doing it!). The best feature I like in PL is its complex but flexible screen workship that can be customized readily. I absolutely hate its file- manager particularly in the version 6.0 and I would love to have a three level custom search selection (using its yoga codes) to replace the nearly ineffective, rickety, marasmic search option that currently exists. *** Your turn now, folks, *** RR
Guest guest
Hello, One thing that has been overlooked/never thought of as important is NADIAMSHA for each jataka. It is a small addition . Tatvam-Asi
Guest guest
Thanks for your addition. Parashara's Light has that. I recall goravani also did. The problem with some of the exotic ones like nadiamsha, shastiamsha and even akshayvedamsha is that birth times are not accurate enough to make those really useful and also not a lot is known about the finer amshas. But very fertile field for research, I agree. Also the variant amshas such as drekkana, hora, trishamsha etc which can be calculated in many different ways. Guest guest
Greetings to all: I have just gotten into jyotish less than a year ago. I did a great deal of research on the available software titles. It was a toss up between Goravani Jyotish and Parashara's Light 6.0. I went with PL. It has a lot of features (more than any other title). However, it also has plenty of calculation flaws. From the very first day, I saw problems. Initially, the company was very helpful in correcting the problems. However, as I used more and more of the available functionalities, more and more problems arose. Now they dont even respond to my requests for fixes (last set of problems identified were back in December 2003). The last update on their website is end of October 2003. I have also used the trial versions of Goravani, Shri Jyoti Star and JH Lite. Goravani is probably the nicest in presentation, but lacks a lot of the functionality of PL (whether or not the calculations are accurate, I don't know). Shri Jyoti Star seems a bit cumbersome and the results dont match what I get with PL -- the placements of planets, etc. seem off. The free version of JL Lite has a nice presentation and some nice features for a free title. But, it has nothing close to features relative to PL. The placement of Mars relative to what I see in PL is somewhat different. It is hard to know the accuracy of the calculations from the demo versions, especially when you cannot compare them side by side (due to the limitations of the demos). The one feature I would like to see added to PL (besides having the calculation flaws fixed) is the displaying of special lagnas (GL, HL, etc.) and arudha padas along with the planets (similar to JH Lite). Guest guest
Shirish, Thanks. Calculation flaws have bugged all software for a long time and can be quite frustrating. Could you elaborate a bit more on the calculation flaws you have found in Parashara's Light (a list would be nice)? This would help people steer away from those areas or at least to be aware of the same, particularly if they do not use those areas or options of the software. Thanks RR , "Shirish Jain" <shirishcom> wrote: > Greetings to all: > > I have just gotten into jyotish less than a year ago. I did a great > deal of research on the available software titles. Guest guest
Greetings: I shall review my emails to PL and compile a list in the next couple of days. Some that come to mind include: 1. When you look at special lagnas (GL, HL, etc) in divisional charts, the displayed information is related to the natal chart (even though the header indicates the divisional chart). 2. The bhava bal scores of houses of various divisional charts are the same (e.g., bhava bal values of all houses - not signs - are the same - draw a basic chart of D20 and D27 and look at the values of the houses, they are identical - on most divsional charts). 3. Certain values in the planetary info window are always that of the natal chart - regardless of the divisional chart used (e.g., shad bal, ishta/kasht, rays) - now my understanding is limited, but I thought the values would change with the divisional chart. 4. Planetary info is that of the natal chart, for the special lagna chart (e.g., whether it is from the ascendant or the sun ascendant, the lordships, dignity, etc. of the planets is that of the natal chart). As, I said, I shall review my past emails to PL and post the others also in a couple of days. I am doing this from memory and apologize in advance if I have given wrong information. Guest guest
Shirish, Even if someone tells you otherwise forcefully or otherwise, bright, vigilent people like you are as rare as Kohinoor on the jyotish scene that I have witnessed for the last 40 years! And people like you will understandably be hi-jacked, captured (enticed wilfully or not) to other lists, just as Kohinoor was and still IS to the chagrin of conservative Indians/Pakistanis <smile>! I will wait patiently for your list before responding to what you reported as calculation errors in PL version 6. I may have my failings but impatience in matters astrological have never been in a big way. No wonder some individuals have often mistaken me here and elsewhere almost intuitively (a very feminine quality, stereotypically speaking!) it seems, for being a woman! :-) Rohini Crystal Pages , "Shirish Jain" <shirishcom> wrote: > Greetings: > > I shall review my emails to PL and compile a list in the next couple > of days. Guest guest
Rohini Jee, By the way you could use the POLL feature of the list for this purpose, then it would be very convenient for you to get all the result under same view, total result, % etc :-) Tanvir. , "rohiniranjan" <rrgb@s...> wrote: > A large group like this is a perfect place for a survey like this. > It is a shame that in general only about 20 people out of the large > number of listed members respond here (4-5 when it comes to > quizes!). Guest guest
Greetings Rohiniji: Thank you for the kind words. As promised, I have reviewed my emails to Parashara's Light for help with problems. The following are excerpts from the emails that I was able to locate: ******************************************************** Sree Lagna Dasha "My Sree lagna is in Leo, so this dasha for rashi chart should start in Leo. However, everytime I open my chart (or any other chart) the dasha periods change, sometimes drastically. Even when the dasha begins with Leo, when I click on to expand the antardashas or move the time frame, the starting point changes to Aries. Other times, the starting point is in 1931". Alternate Lagnas (Jaimini) "I have noticed that when I display the Alternate Lagnas (under Jaimini in the Tables column) in any chart, the displayed information is for the rashi chart (even though the title bar references the appropriate divisional chart)". Tutorials "I have noted that while using the tutorial function, several lessons are either missing content or the content just cuts off in the middle of the lesson". Progression (Fixed by PL) "It has been several weeks since I asked for help with straightening out my progression charts. All my charts were off by 1 year. Over the last several weeks you have had me remove certain files and that has addressed other problems that I have had. However, my progression charts are still off by 1 year". Bhava Bal "The bhava bal values displayed for some charts are the same: I have compared the bhava bal values for various houses in D10, D4, Hora (Iyer), etc. The values for same house number are the same. That is to say the bhava bal for each house is identical in these charts. I have not reviewed all the charts, but the few that I did look at, the values are the same". Planetary Info "When looking at the planetary information under the Special Charts column; all planetary information is for the natal chart and planetary info for bhava chart is the same as the birth chart (even when planetary positions change) with regard to sign placement and dignity. I have not looked at all the special charts". ***************************************************** Hope this helps those who use PL. I have not examined all facets of this software. If others have issues or problems they have identified, I would be interested in hearing about them. Your comments will be most appreciated. Guest guest
Thanks -- now we have a more specific idea about which areas of miscalculation you were talking about! Hasty implementation of some of the new research by programmers for competitive reasons would be my guess in these instances! Guest guest
~ Om Namah Shivaya ~ I have also heard from some other users regarding calculations problems in PL 6. I guess it is because the people who are developing the software don't have Astrological knowledge, so counter checking is not there. Guess development team is just given mathematical formulaes and while co-relating different modules, an error results. Till now, for accurate calculations JHL (Free Version) is good for me. I am strongly looking to buy the commercial version, whenever it will be in reach of my pocket. Guest guest
Just a note of caution when making statements that question accuracy of any software. Many of the factors noted here are neither mainstream jyotish nor used by most individuals. Often I have seen errors in these less common but added anyway for competition's sake that do not get tested and depend upon user feedback. Given the small user base for the commercial software and the types of errors that used to crop up in basic calculations even a few years ago, most software have come ahead quite far. Given that, one must never let go of caution as these software packages are still unwieldy and do not have smooth interfaces. Errors can arise due to many reasons and may go unnoticed until a time-bomb goes off somewhere. And the problems get addressed in a random manner, it seems! We got to work with what we have, but with caution, particularly if it is one of the exotic, new research/logic based features, such as the varga bhava bala in the list given here.
