Dear Friends:

Here begins an important reflection on the most powerful, sometimes, 'malefic'.....Saturn...!

(see below, especially, people's recent reports of their own malefic & benefic

Saturn experiences)

Saturn is described as especially troublesome, most of the time, and is

considered the 'worst' Malefic, in Astrology, Western & Eastern, both, alike!

However, there are exceptions!

For example, those who have Saturn either in it's Own Sign, Capricorn or

Aquarius, and especially Exalted in Libra!

Those individuals quite often report, not the normal malefic symbolisms of Sani,

but, quite the oppostive, wonderful ... even.. 'benefic',...qualities.

I thought it might be insightful to reflect on Saturn during the last 2-Month's

of the,.... Moon's & Saturn transits....

Moon & Saturn, together,.... is like a mini-2day, Sade Sat. When Saturn, is

found transiting, either the Sign before the Sign that the Moon was in, on your

day of birth, or, in the Sign, immediately before and after the Sign that your

Moon was in......This, Saturn 'transit' represents a 7 1/2 year...

Saturn....wake-up, call which...is the classic, period of 'Sade Sat'.

This is normally a very hellious time for moany people, and is often spoken of

like that, without any reprieve, or hope!

Also, Those who are born with the Moon either being in the same sign as Saturn,

is in, the Sign before or after the Moon,...all are 'signs' of being born in

Saturn, sade sat! This too will be representative quite often of a 'malefic'

Saturn, from your Chart!

And, finally, those people who have a Malefic Saturn, either influencing the

Sun, Moon or Rising Sign Lord, or influencing any other, especially 'benefic'

planets....or...

in important Houses like the lst, 2nd... 4th, 5th, 7th, 8th, 9th, and

especially, 12th....obviously....

There are as many 'malefic', Saturn configurations as you can imagine!

And, most people experience many 'awful', 'rough', 'grievous', or 'losses', or

'deaths', and on and on....associated with Saturn....and especially...

during either Saturn Transits, Saturn Dasas,....or in their lives, due to having

a powerful Malefic Saturn in their charts....In other words, some people even

experience Saturn 'hardships' during almost any periods, in addition to the

more obvious Saturn periods. This is because..of...Saturn being in important

Houses, or with important Planets like the Sun and Moon, for example!

Though these Saturn qualities, can get even, worse, during the Saturn transits, and Dasas!

Saturn transits, for example, transiting, in particular Houses in your chart,

like the lst, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, & 12th

Are especially important especially if there are important Planets in any of those House....too..

Specific Dasas periods are these: Saturn Dasas,

Mahadasa, 19 Years...

Antardasas, are mostly, 3 years... and finally,

Bhukti periods, of...approximately 6 months...

However, there's a slightly new Astrological idea circling around that maybe

Saturn can be benefic, as well.

Certainly those with traditionally, benefic Saturn Placements, are testaments of this...

There are even, a few books that have been written, including, "Saturn: Friend

or Foe?", and "Saturn: A New Look At An Old Devil!" Both, of these books are

great reading, and especially, if you've got a malefic Saturn, that's bugging

you!

I'm going to first just list the different Malefic & benefic experiences that

were reported both during the lst, Saturn transit, around 3/1st...and then

again, recently around the 28th....

I mainly felt it in a positive way. I felt like I was getting organized and

focused and only doing what was really important. I didn't let others push me

around or make demands on my time. I decided how to spend my time and was

conscious that I was in control of it. I straightened up the house and made

sure to do a good long yoga session, and was "determined" not to let people

hassle me. I came up with the phrase, "I am moving at my own pace" and that

seemed to characterize how I reacted to it. I kind of liked it!

Regarding the last couple of days it was business as usual. Seemed ok. Last week

was intense however.

I have a lot of good saturn influence in my chart...

Ilene reflects a good point here. When we have, sometimes, a balanced Saturn in

our Charts, then, more often then not, our experiences of Transiting Saturn, can

be more benefic!

to me this transit was rather benefic : inner peace, silence, balance... quiet.

I even managed to have a serious conversation with a rather "difficult to

reach" man, he never spoke to me before for such a long time about important

subjects, for the first time, It seemed worthy of a long speech...

However, in fact, there were some delays, but not harmful.

Moon & Saturn >were coming up, and that you thought this might help, or was it

just how you felt?or both?

Ah... consciously it was just how I felt ! But unconciously, I do not know, it

is a fact that this man is very Saturnian... but, really I just felt it was the

right time to speak to him (it is me who engaged the speech).

We can experience 'being' in-tune with Sani, at any moment, and that represents

the more positive, 'benefic' side.... or we can experience the 'malefic'

moments...as the next lady reported, both.

It's just fascinating to me, to follow the particular 'flavor' of the Sani,

qualities because they're very unique and are not at all like the Mars

transits, which are more about 'anger', or 'crusading', .....

Regarding your poll, I have been experiencing both the positive and negative

aspects. I feel solemn much of the time, even depressed, and am focusing on

matters that feel weighty. I lost, or discovered to be lost, some items that

were important to me.

But I'm also feeling very happy to be alone, in seclusion (isn't seclusion,

shani?) I have been very inward, doing a lot of self-examination (doing

Byron Katie's "work"), often feeling intense emotions but often transcending

with it and often detaching from old ideas.

Here Cheryll, mentions a very important, profound aspect, or key to Saturn....transformation:

'transcending'.... when one meditates, on can experience a kind of

'distancing'....some put it in terms of that....transcending... What it means

is some distance gets created from our challenges, problems, even too active,

mentality, always rusing....

and transcending, or meditating.... literally enlivens...an inner kind of

pool..of softness, of peace....

which acts as a natural buffer to 'Saturn' grief!

This quality where we 'expereince' the so-called, 'malefic' flavor of

Saturn,...is nature's way of showing us, how we're 'presently', out of tune

with Saturn!

I say it this way, because the nature of life's consequences, especially if

they're negative, aren't just a curse, or a given,...but they're a natural

consequence of past actions, that are now, coming back to us...

If Nature didn't do this, we'd have no way of knowing how we're doing...

And it doesn't take long, we're up too late 2 or 3 days in a row, and

immediately our health can suffer!

It's not that nature is punishing us!...but Nature is showing us....the effect

of what we've been doing, so we learn!

And learning...about Saturn means we learn about the importance of Rest...

about the importance of regular, repeated, consistent periods of rest &

relaxation,.... before and after all periods of activity!

Rest & Activity, go together.... and Sani's the one, that govern's this cycle of Nature!

Mark, I've had the best day, bubbling over with happiness and contentment.

But I have Saturn in the first natally and Moon in tenth, so I guess the

Moon Saturn thing makes me feel at home. Just as well...I've finished sade

sate recently, will go into Jupiter Saturn this August, have Saturn

currently opposing my sun and will have my second Saturn return soon.

Here's a good example of someone who's experienceing a nice positive Saturn, but

they're also aware of the possibly negative or 'malefic'....Saturn periods

coming up.

This appreciation of the stronger, more negative, periods will be especially

helpful, even if one has a more positive Saturn in one's chart.

I do know, a hand full of Exalted Saturn people who though they're supposed to

have a very good, positive, Sani, but...still, they too can experience some

malefic, unhappy, Saturn qualities.

I've reflected a lot on this and I've realized...that having a 'good' Saturn is

one thing, but one can still strain, ...some 'strong' Saturn people I know,

seem to take advantage of their normally, positively good Saturn...and work too

hard, and for them...

their Saturn feedbacks, or slaps, ...can be very harsh...

It's almost like they know better, and are straining anyway....

I heard a story...one time from a Yoga teacher talking about how it happens when

one gets out of tune with Nature....

"When you first start to violate the laws of nature, nature gives you an

innocent nudge or reaction to your actions. But, if you keep going the little

reminders start to get stronger and stronger, till we're knocked off our feat."

I've loved this description as I've studied Saturn, because Saturn represents

the primary, being in-tune with Nature quality and especially what happens when

we get out of tune.

So, we're staying up too late, and the first few days, we're kind of tired, but

not overwhelmed. But, if we persist in violating the need to get more rest,

then, quickly that gentle kind of feedback, does become more intense, till we

do find ourselves, sick in bed....

Like that.... try and perceive the uncomfortable and especially pained or

tiredness in the body, as initial Saturn responses, not to be ignored but to be

listened to!

You want to talk about a malefic Saturn?. I could not slow down take a rest as I

had both aged and ill parents (now deceased) to care and provide for and a child

to raise totally on my own. I have had a lot of responsibility with people

relying on me, because there wasn't anybody else to help. I am not a martyr. I

consider these unavoidable situations part of my duty anyway. Ellen is 16yrs

now, she pleases me very much, but she is the ultimate money sponge. In reality

the poor little kid doesn't ask for much. We just get by on my Disability

pension which is marked way below the poverty line. All Saturn, my dear.

Actually, I am getting used to it, I fought it at first, at the begining of

Saturn dasa. The trick is, not to want anything

Here's an example of a more traditional Saturn quality, which unfortunately

makes us feel, too often, that we're stuck in a kind of huge...Saturn

consequence...and there's nothing that we can do ...but suffer in it...

This in fact, is one of the reasons why Saturn has developed the severity of reputation that it has.

However, this isn't the case,.... Just because someone gets sick...and even, God

forbid, some disease, this doesn't mean that Saturn is mean, or unjust.

As it turns out, we had a lot of chances, but we didn't understand the

symbolisms...that were coming to us. So, we kept going and eventually, we got

sick, or stuck,...in many kinds of greivous situations.

Try and remember, to pay attention and perceive any negative, or malefic Saturn

symbolisms.... as soon as possible!

That way, we can try and adjust earlier before the result gets more intense...

I like to Say.... there are 3 D's...to Saturn...

there's dis-ease.....

but if we ignore feeling diseased, our out of tune... eventually...

dis-ease...turns into disease....

And if we can't find a solution,...then disease...turns into death....

Saturn, however, is about life,....

life in-tune with itself...radiates....immortality...and eternity....

Saturn teaches literally about death & immortality.... and as such is the

primary planet associated with length of life-span....

Because of what we've done in the past...we got born with such and such...of a life-span...

But, we can improve upon that...

and Sani's the one...to draw our attention...to this...all important...

rest, rejuvenative, and healing aspect of life....

Saturn shouldn't just be called the Planet of Grief,...we should start calling

Saturn the Planet of REST!

GRIEF..FOR YOUNGER 32 YEARS OF AGE BROTHER ...HOW I WOULD FEEL.

I AM STARTING A NEW VENTURE (AS IT'S DIRECTOR) HERE AND SAW THAT QUITE A FEW

THINGS/JOBS THAT WERE SUPPOSED TO HAVE BEEN DONE BEFORE HAVE STARTED TO HAPPEN

AND I FELT BETTER ABOUT THIS.

Pls let me know about yr findings in context to my chart / jyotish learning.

I am feelng terrible.....had some very deep/knowledgeful but troubling findings

about the diesease that my btrother has been diagnosed with.

Here's an example, of the very difficult dis-ease, and disease stage of life.

What we have to remember, is...if a situation, reaches the disease stage, it

took a long time to get there, so we need to have patience....that it may take

some time, to turn around...

But, this is the purpose of life!

How we can all be born, with our particular 'karmas'...and in each of our

malefic situtaions,....these are exactly where we're supposed to learn....to

adjust...

and Saturn, in our charts, precisely, shows us exactly where,...we need to

bring more patience, silence and balance, into our lives!

seems, that Saturn acted rather malefic, this time..

Became ill again and moreover had a strange "fight" with someone...

Don't forget, Saturn didn't cause us...but rather....we caused it...and Saturn's

bringing it back to us!

But, Saturn can immediately, respond in a more favorable away once we identify,

and then adjust to a more balanced, restful stance...

Saturn is just a feedback, call, where and when we need more rest.

Unfortunately, we live in such a World and such a time, where rest and

rejuvenation, are not widely understood, or appreciated.

I remember when I was got involved in teaching meditation in business in the

middle and later 1970's. We used to go in and try and promote stress reduction

in the business sector. I'll never forget the time when one business owner,

manager said:

'Oh, no, we want!...our employees to be under stress!..... How else are they

going to stay motivated and be productive!"

I was flaburgasted! I said: "Oh,...you don't understand....stress is that

which restricst productivitiy, causes, in fact, higher abseenteeism, and more

sick days..."

Of course he wasn't buying any of it!...

Then, I noticed about 15 or 20 years later...when talking to the same kinds of

business leaders, immediately, when I said, the 'stress' word, they said: "Oh,

stress?... great, come on in, we're very interested in helping our employees be

without stress!"

I thought what the heck happened?

What had happened was in the course of a very short 10 or 15 years, our whole

world culture had begun to understand...stress and health, more clearly.

Today, we know that stress is literally responsible for over 70% of all

diseases, and complicates the remainder.

So, what is stress?

That which results from strain. You push yourself too far, you work too long,

and what happens?

something, gets locked in there... some stress, some fatigue, and that's the

beginning of dis-ease.

How do we know if we're pushing too hard, and/or stress is resulting...?

You'll know by how you wake up?

If you wake up and notice that you're feeling 'any' tiredness!

any fatigue, and don't feel all reved and ready to go!

that means some stress is starting to build up!

Listen to yourself...listen to your body.....and if you even begin to notice a

malefic, Saturnian, quality, there....then make a little Jyotish experiment!

Get a little bit more rest.... Go to bed earlier for a few nights in a row.

Take a little bit more time off, here and there.... 'Rejuvenate!'.....

meditate, more, more deeply...more regularly....

And see, directly, if that tiredness, that lethargy, that delaying quality going

on in your envirnoments!

See if they don't immediately...start to subside!

Nature will show you, that you were right, in resting more....

Don't feel too bad, though.

We're certainly not encouraged or educated about this very important

relationship between rest and activity!

But, that's Saturn's job....to teach us...

And once we realize...he's constanctly on the job, there, ready and willing to help!

then, listen to Him...and respond!

You won't be disappointed!

Malefic Saturn:

"delay, or loss, or grief, or loneliness, or disappointment".... yes, yes, yes,

felt them all over the last few days. In fact, on Sat. I asked Jim if Saturn

was doing a thing with the moon again because I felt so depressed, sad, etc.(it

always afects me that way and I'm usually right-on). He did say late last night

that Saturn and the moon were together, though. I had a creepy

spider dream last night and felt some anxiety and heaviness.I'm still feeling

the effects right now !!

Like me, too!.... and both of us...have had these kinds of experiences....

I think, though that's one of the reasons why I've made such progress with my

own Saturn, because I had too!

Anyone born in the worst time of Sade Sat....! definitely is in for a Saturn wake up call!

Thing got worse for me on Sat, my back went out and I cannot walk!! This has

not happened to me in a very long time. There is so much physical tension and

stress. I also have feelings that are uneasy and uncertain. I do not feel as

secure and confident as I usually do. Very sudden change for me.

It's also helpful, understanding that even unusual and infrequent occurances,

can be Saturn, showing us, that we've managed to get out of balance!

Learning these innocent symbolisms of both maleific and benefic Saturn will help

us know how we're doing, and use these experiences,...as a kind of guide...

to stay more in-tune with Saturn! and be more happy, healthy, and balanced!

Last Thurs. was intense for me, I was very charged up, had to go to the

chiropractor twice to unwind, but today was more tense for coworkers -

responding irritably. Weekend was full of activity - but stayed focused and

finished jobs.

It's so significant to see, how much we can get pulled off ourselves, during

especially Saturn times, ie. transits and even dasas...

So, learning that we need more patience, and more yoga, exercise, rest and

rejuvenation... will all, be extremely helpful!

We'll experience that we've done the 'right' thing, because we'll immediately....feel better!

The weekend was horrible....I had loads of work to do

but was feeling very physically miserable...drowsy..even after

getting up from a long night sleep was feeling some nagging tiredness and

pain in legs...quite irritating..

i must add iam running Shade Sani with my moon sign being in

Cancer. The last month Moon did its transit through Mithuna,,,i was

physically down on energy..same this time too!!!

But I didnt feel these much as long as I was engaging in

Venusian activities like shopping ( food stuff) or chatting and

also the Saturnian activities of cleaning and rearranging the messed

up kitchen!!!

This experience is a good one, of how even when one thinks one is resting

enough, but still, especially during Sade Sat periods, or even others....

we'll notice that we might need even more!

I now, realize...that these kinds of periods, are not just symbolic of an

inherent, malefic nature...

but are indicative...of great healing periods!

Once we start to realize that rest, rejuvenation and healing are a much more

important phase of life,

then we'll stop feeling like we're wasting our time,....when...we

go to bed...

mediate,

rest...and spend time, in down periods!

I tell people this now, that during these kinds of Saturn periods, this would be

a great time to focus on healings, and inner work, and development!

And won't necessarily be that helpful ...for outer, advancement!

One of the Yoga teachers I've studied one time, said: "Yoga is like building a

skyscraper. Your life may be like a 10 story building. In truth, you first

have to go down, 2 or 3 stories, so you can go up! Like that, you need to

develop the inner side of you, ...and as you do that,...then you'll be

successful in the outer!"

Most people think that meditation, and Consciousness expansion is only for those

who have time, or for those who are more spiritually or inner motivated.

The truth is that all, need to have a more inner, keal, developed...and lived...

All, need to have a more inner, centeredness,...and it is indeed, this inner

Silence and balance...which is the key!...to all outer accomplishments!

Hi Mark,

I had two distinctly different Saturn days.

Sunday was definitely the malefic flavor...grief, frustration with delays,

loneliness (even with nice people around), and finally just surrender.

Saturn is sitting in my Ascendant right on top of my chart lord, Mercury

which is only one degree from my Sun and I'm in a Sun/Mercury/Jupiter period

which shifts in a few days to Sun/Mercury/Saturn....I'm "curious" to see

what that will feel like.

On the up side, though, today (Monday) I felt lighter, and enjoyed the deep silent,

orderly workings of Saturn....so once the Moon moved just barely past

Saturn everything shifted to a softer easier quality.

Finally this evening at 7:30 when the exact Ketu aspect hit, I was hosting a

group meditation at my home and the silence and depth of our group

experience was amazing.

Here's a beautiful description of both the negative, malefic side of saturn and what

can happen when you enliven it's oppositive, meditative, peaceful, silent, side!

Re effects of Saturn. Saturn has always been benficial to me as he is a YOGA

Karaka (Vrishabh Lagna), and is placed in a Trine (5th).

So my vote is Beneficial

Again, take these Saturn 'signs'...as just that.... signs of how we're doing.

And you don't have to take the thoughts even seriously, but just respond, taking

more rest and relaxation and you'll immediately...change the negative into it's

oppositive, positive!

so far, so good.

I have got the feeling that Mars & Rahu is bothering me more than the Moon &

Saturn, I have had a lot of headaches lately. But also a lot of things

acomplished.

Since I am more aware of the Saturn effects, I try to stay calm and have more

patience then before that awareness.

As I see a lot of stress and impatience with other people around me, but it does

not bother me. So I go for ...having the benefic!

Here's another wonderful experience of learning to appreciate the real, truthful

meaning of these benefic & malefic symbolisms....

Most people don't realize that within all curses, or malefic situations,...is a

blessing in disguise!

And once we start to see this, we can literally turn any difficult situation...into it's Glorious!

I do not know if this transit was really malefic but I met several old persons

(only old : no child, no baby !) everywhere I went !

One of my friend is very sad, because her beloved dog has died... sadness... Saturn.

And... I managed to get a second very good conversation with the man of

yesterday ! It seems to me that serious things are going on, and that a deep

building is possible in a very important field (a field in which I worked

years, and years, and lives, and lives ago... a very strange transit for me,

indeed).

I am getting sooooooo good at the saturn/moon thing. This morning I started

feeling really depressed,irritable, frustrated, etc. and almost said to

Jim...the moon is with saturn again isn't it? This afternoon I did ask him

and I was "right on". I seem to feel it very strong each month.

Hi Mark:

I definitely feel this saturn thing again. At first I was sad and frustrated

and out of flow. My car battery went dead! After I got a jump start and made

it home I saw your email and realized I was letting Saturn be malefic. So I

changed my tack. I stopped running around trying to accomplish things.

Instead I took care of myself, went to bed early, read a great book on The

Power of Intention, drank tea, got some exercise, but all in a kind loving

way. Helped alot. So I would say I started Malefic and then went to Benefic!

Your emails always arrive right when I need a reminder to pay attention.

This lady is one of my recent graduates of my Internet Jyotish courses, and her

experience shows how wonderful and practical this knowledge is!

I really enjoyed watching the moon and its affect this weekend with its

influence on Saturn. I am usually happy but this weekend was more peaceful,

quite, and inward than most. I love being alone and nature seemed to grant

this desire all weekend, as I did what I love most, being in my garden.

My mom used to tell all my siblings, "leave him alone, he's happiest by

himself". Mothers do know best.

On yesterday evening, I

was very quiet at home, writing and drawing as I was

answered to do,

everything got done in the right time.

Within, I was very peaceful... no problem with

Saturn.

However, now, I must take care of Mars, and that is

another story... !
