On a series of postings of Mercury that I will be making, here is a

posting #1. I have taken some stories of the net, neatly compiled

with some of my own powerful experiences to explain the nature of

this planet in our day to day life.

Powerful Story explaining relationship with Moon

Jupiter's wife, Tara, was impregnated by the Moon during an affair.

After resuming her relationship with her husband Jupiter, a son was

born. Tara confirmed that the Moon was the real father. This was

again confirmed by Lord Brahma, who made Mercury live close to the

Sun. Mercury performed penance to Lord Shiva and was granted the

boon of becoming a planet.

The son of Buddha (Mercury) is called Saumya, that is "Son of Soma

(Moon)". From Buddha springs the lunar race. The Moon being his

father, is friendly towards him. But Mercury knows that he is son of

the wife of Jupiter so he is in conflict with the Moon, who seduced

his mother.

** Mercury always maintains enmity with Moon but Moon is friendly

toward him being his father.

Mercury when conjunct with MARS makes its natives nervous, insecure,

vocal and overly excitable (Mars excitability conditions).

Mercury rules education, writers, lecturers, artists, teachers,

traders, businessmen, the nervous system, lungs and intestines. It

rules speech, intelligence, wit, humor, self-confidence, astrology,

mathematics.

Mercury is related to Wednesday and its color is Green.

Weak Mercury may make subjects restless, fearless, fearful or

neurotic. When Mercury is ill-placed or aspected, it may cause lack

of intelligence or communicative skills, or a poor memory. It can

make a person immature, foolish and childish. Feelings of insecurity

and lack of self control, leading to addictions and artificial

dependencies, are also manifest from a poor placement of this

planet. Physically it can show itself as weakness of the nervous

system, anxiety, neural indigestion, or insomnia. It may cause bowel

and elimination problems such as diarrhea or constipation,

difficulty in digesting food, kidney disease, or respiratory

problems.

Being a neutral planet Mercury it changes according to its placement

in sign and house, and that is why it is said to have a mercurial

nature. Because it is nearest to the SUN, it is restless, which also

makes it quick changing, fickle and often retrograde. Mercury

sometimes precedes the Sun and sometimes follows it.

Mercury is friends with Venus and SUN. The rahu and ketu behavior is

shown below. But the golden rule is its severe enmity with MOON.

Another variation of the story:

As per the Vishnu Dharmottara Puraana Rishi Kashyapa had three

wives - Aditi, Diti and Danuvu. Raja was the son born to Danuvu. He

loved Vaaruni, daughter of Varuna or Neptune. As a token of love,

Raja transferred all his powers to Vaaruni. Making use of these

powers, Vaaruni `dissolved' herself in water. However, Raja followed

her and dissolved himself too. During that time, Chandra or the moon

was churning water for the children. While the churning was in

progress, Vishnu showed his reflection in the water, resulting in

the transformation of the water into divine lustre. Then

Brihaspati's (Jupiter) wife Tara handed over this lustre to Chandra

or the moon's wife Rohini. Budha is said to have been born out of

this lustre.

Budha is endorsed with razor sharp intellect, which made Brahma give

him the name Budha. He is known to be proficient in all the

sciences. Mercury is an indicator of intelligence, commerce,

education, communication writing, books, humour, scholars, thieves

and astrologers.

Rahu with Mercury and other planets

When Rahu is with Sun, it can damage your EGO, sense of self and

values, potentially becoming ruthless, and power hungry; With the

Moon, it hurts your sense of emotional stability, creating

insecurity and possessiveness, with mercury, a mind that is probing

and obsessive, with Venus, compulsive, jealous and intensity in

affairs of the heart; with Mars, athletic ability, unbridled

ambition and potential violence; with Jupiter you may be consumed

with amassing power, money and property.

Emerald or Jade

Emerald or fine green jade is recommended for strengthening a weak

Mercury. It increases the powers of communication. Obviously this is

important and necessary for business people and those in the various

fields of communication, be they writers, speakers or entertainers.

Emeralds and jade are said to strengthen the nerves and on the

physical side, to purify the blood. It increases the flow of

positive life energy and so has been used by healers to further

increase their ability to mend the body and mind.

It is very important that to be most effective, the emerald has a

minimum of flaws and a depth and intensity of color. It is much

better to use a very clear, flawless emerald of light color, than to

use one with many imperfections. Emeralds generally are flawed. In

any case, the flaws interfere with the transmission of Mercury's

cosmic energy and should be avoided.

General

For a Sagittarius Ascendant Mercury in Virgo in 10th becomes exalted

in the most powerful angle and causes one of the most powerful

Bhadra Yogas.

Here let's take an example of a Mercury, Venus and Ketu in 10th.

This makes the combination very exciting in the sense that Mercury

gets exalted and Venus gets debilitated. To propitiate and get the

full effect of Mercury it becomes necessary to "RELIEVE" VENUS

through proper Remedies. This is one way of looking at it. KETU will

cause problems in way of articulating. Proper worship to Ganesh Ji

can help alleviate that stress on mercury. These are some of the

ways to analyze.

For a Virgo Ascendant, Mercury in 10th in own sign in most powerful

angle causes yet another powerful Bhadra Yoga.

For a Gemini Ascendant, Mercury in 4th exalted causes a powerful

Bhadra Yoga.

Bill Gates

Bill Gates has a Gemini Ascendant, Lagna, so let's start with

Mercury, the ascendant ruler of his chart.

Mercury here is exalted, implying exceptional intelligence. Mercury

is in the fourth house with Mars. His Mercury depicts his manner of

communicating. It is with aggressive, combative Mars. This is

someone who will win his arguments. This combination makes for a

great debater or a lawyer. The fourth house rules the mother; his

mother was a lawyer. Mercury aspects only the opposite sign/house.

Remember, it aspects the entire sign and any planet contained within

the sign also aspects are in only forward direction. The closer the

orb, the more powerful, but it will influence the entire sign of

Pisces.

His Moon is in the tenth house of Pisces. Mercury will connect to

the Moon, bringing with it its imprint of Mars because it is

conjunct. Additionally, this aspect of Mercury/Moon will bring with

it the houses both planets rule, plus Mars, because they are all

connected. His Moon in the Tenth house of career takes on the

essence of Mercury's first house and fourth house. The first house

is you, and the fourth house is the masses and kingship. The Moon

in the tenth can imply fame, but with these aspects from both Mars

and Mercury it takes on an entirely different quality of

intelligence and competitiveness.

SIMPLE REMEDY

Day: Wednesday

Gayatri Mantra: AUM Budhagrahaya vidmahe, Indu putraya dhimahi,

tanno somya prachodayat

AUM CHANDRA PUTRAYAI VIDMAHE ROHINI PRIYA DHIMAHI, TANNO BHUDA

PRACHODAYAT

"AUM BUDHAAYA NAMAH". Simple chanting on Wednesday.

More

====

Worship of Vishnu, who is the presiding deity, is recommended to

appease this planet. Budha favours green colour and green gram

("Moongi Dhal" or "Payaru") and that is offered as naivedya. Of the

nine precious gems, Budha favours emerald and he influences

business. This planet gives knowledge, astrological knowledge,

efficiency in work, sense of humour, literary ability and

mathematical prowess. Black water-lily, wax flower (Sampangi),

flowers in black and red colours, green gram, cow ghee, curds and

grape juice are his favourites.

Budha or Mercury is considered as the greatest among the wise. This

God bestows wisdom and wealth on his devotees. He removes evil

thoughts from their minds. He is the chief among the Gnanis

(realized souls). He is considered Vishnu Rupi, because of his

beauty and resemblance. A prayer to Him, especially on Wednesdays,

brings in manifold benefits like removal of obstacles, and helps one

to get a progeny, possession of fertile lands, etc.

P.S: The second posting which will focus on the Retrograde natire of

Mercury and other transitary behaviors will be followed with some

detailed analysis of 2 charts that I have looked into.

I hope it helps one and all.

Dear Sanjay,

It is an excellent write up on mercury. Thanks for

sharing this information with us.

Just my 2 cents, I have mercury as my AK in 8th house

(dusthana), retro, combusted, debiliated, and placed

with a malefic ketu. still I recieve good results in

mercury periods.

Reason: What I belived is that Mercury is placed in

its own star and Retro + Debiliated gives some results

of exaltation, so good results coming out. Rest

Mercury MD will clarify in future.
