Guest guest
Dear Freedom-ji, Namaskar. I have a slightly different understanding. Ardana means moving restlessly, disturbing, distressing, annhilating. Ardana has a negative connotation. So Janaah (pl.) + ardana - Janaardana means " One who inflicts suffering on evil men". Alternatively, it means " One to Whom all pray for worldly success and liberation". This is the meaning given in translation by Swami Tapasyananda for Sri Vishunusahasranaama where Janaardana is a name of Vishnu. Just wanted to share this variation. Guest guest
Dear Freedom-ji, Namaskar. You are also right and you are thinking is the positive way which is good. Your meaning is applicable. However, various translators interpreted this word in various ways based on their own understanding or based on the context. For example, this word appears in Chapter 1 Sloka 36 in Bhagavad Gita. Here Swami Gambhirananda, a very venerable scholar and a sanyani of the Ramakrishna Order has interpreted it as "One who afflicts creatures". I quote him here: " By addressing Krsna thus, Arjuna hinted that, since killing of relatives was sinful in his case, therefore, if they are to be killed at all, it should be done by Krsna Himself, for no sin accrues to Him even when He destroys the world at the time of cosmic dissolution." Guest guest
Dear Freedom-ji, namaskar. If I may add, good and evil, dark and light are all aspects of Krishna. He is impeller of man who is doing good and one who is doing bad. He is karta and karma, karma can su- and duh- and both are His. He is responsible for both. It is our rajas which makes us differentiate. As I said, it is contextual. Just like Ma or mother -- we use the same word Ma when we want different things from Her and call on Her with different intentions. Guest guest
Om Gurave Namah Namaste Freedom and Sourav, Janardana can also mean the Spirit which animates all… jana=created beings+ardana =moving about/agitating Then there's the other meaning of ardana= crushing or destroying. In this connection I recall the story of Sri Krishna killing Panchajana, the demon who captured the son of Sandipani (krishna's teacher). But the merciful Lord did find some thing to salvage even from the demon….the Panchajanya, the sound of which terrified the adharmic and gladdened the hearts of the dharmic..the sole weapon carried by Krishna to the battlefield. The Bhagavadgita is an expansive exposition of that Pranava which rang out of the Panchajanya. We are all panchajanas and it's Pancha-Janardana, who uplifts us by killing the negative in us, reforms us and accepts our untainted soul. When He said "ParitraaNaaya saadhoonaam vinaashaayacha dushkritaam…"destroying the evil and protecting the good ... He was talking about two sides of the same coin called Dharma. When the Sun shines forth, darkness is destroyed…yet isn't it a positive event?
