I have always wondered why the directions in the chart seem to make no

sense.. if the earth turns to the east (ascendant) sets in the west -

how is it that the 10th house is South and 4th house (nadir) is North?

When looking at a globe or a map, North is above the horizontal line

dranw between two points, not below it.

it does not seem to make sense -- yet mars and Sun have Dig bala in

the south (10 house) and Chandra/Shukra in the North (4th house)

can you explain this?

Dear Sam, Namaskar

During the mid-day, also known as Abhijit muhurta, we say that the Sun is in

the sourthern direction. Now from lagna where is it placed? You will have

your answer.

Dear Visti,

thanks for your response.

Yes, as i said - I know the 10th house (midheaven) is directly

overhead and the sun and Mars are strong there and that direction is

called South.

My question is (or statement is) it seems backwards that if the east

is to the right (right hand) the west toward the left (left hand)

then how is it that the South (which is usually down, not up when we

travel) is directly over head and the north is down, not up.

I live in Seattle, to go to Canada, i travel north, up, a higher

latitude,, yet in the Zodiac, The "North" is BELOW, under, straight

through the bottom of the EARTH, not above relative to our worldly

direction.

this seems totally backwards to directions on a compass and latitude

as i see it.

thanks

Dear Sam, Namaskar

Those directions indicated by the Suns angle to the earth are astronomical

directions, and not astrological. As you yourself have inferred: the sun

rises in the east, peaks in the south and sets in the west. These are

horizontal directions based on the solar system and has no link to the

geographical up/down directions of a map. In other words; South is not up,

it is just the direction in which the Sun is placed during midday. Having

your back to this Sun during midday will put your face in the direction of

canada.

Its purely astronomical. Your confusement lies in assigning these to

vertical directions... they are horizontal.
