You can chant the mantra during office hours, but you must not recite Om Bhur Bhuva Svah. Only “tat savitur....etc”, otherwise you may anger the deity. Guest guest
||Shri Gurubhyo Namah|| Visti and other Gurus The following is what I was told when I was initiated at my Upanayanam ceremony. 1. First things first. This is a Dhiksha Mantra and has to be initiated by a Guru. This is normaly done at the time of Upanayanam. 2. This mantra has results only when done along with Sandhya Vandhanam, Which is done three times a day. ie it is considered as a part of nitya karma for all who practice it every day. 3. There are certain niyamas that need to be followed such as Marjanam, Devatha argyam, Praanayama, Gayatri aavahanam,Gayatri Mantra Japam and Gayatri upasthanam etc. 4. These days it has become like a general mantra and has been recited by every one. Not that I am against it but want to know whether it yeilds any results if only Gayatri mantra is recited w/o all other Niyamas. Please pardon my ignorance and.. I DO NOT WANT TO START A DEBATE or OPEN A PANDORA'S BOX. The reason is People do ask for mantras and I want to be sure before prescribing. Guest guest
Dear all, Pranaam, Please allow myself to share my comment. This is not an argument. Whatever content is below is just my understanding/learnings/readings of Gäyatrï and my experience. You are right that person need to be initiated to do the mantra. But there is something beyond this also. I myself Practised Gäyatrï for almost two and half year without any initiation. Just by a shear experience in waking dream state eary in the morning I felt motivated to do this and my life comletely changed. Gäyatrï pactise is the one from which my spritual endevour started. There are two things, one is The Upäsanä (devotional practice with meditation) and other is Sädhanä (spiritual endeavor of self- elevation) of realization of Gäyatrï are unanimously attributed by the spiritual masters and great saintly personalities of all ages as the perfect sources of purification, escalation and sublime transformation of personality and life as a whole. Gäyatrï Upäsana is essential for every human being because, it begins the process of refinement at the level of sentiments and cultivation of true virtues of humanity in every dimension of personality. Does upäsanä mean only worshiping a deity performing some rituals or uttering some prayers with or without meditation…? Certainly not. Rituals are only some `tools' which help initial training of the ever agile mind…. These external modes of practicing upäsanä are lifeless without the driving force of internal devotion which inspires the feeling of samarpana --- total sacrifice of ego, selfish desires, self-identity --- in the limitless ocean of divine love…., in the unlimited expansion and eternal expressions of Thou…. The Sädhanä of Gäyatrï is of utmost importance for spiritual evolution as it burns out the past sins and associated intrinsic deficiencies of the sädhaka (devotee). The illusive propagations of the medieval era and the cynical mentality of the so called masters of religion at that time had brought all kinds of misconceptions in Indian philosophy of yore. Whence the Gäyatrï Mantra was being described as an esoteric mantra which can be `taught' secretly only by some special gurüs (spiritual masters) to a special class of `deserving' devotees…. Commenting on the `secret initiation' of the mantra by the so called `gurüs ', simply blow air by chanting mantra in the ears of the devotees, while a truly noble gurü (satgurü) inspires the life force of Gäyatrï in the inner self….". The ideal conjugation of Gäyatrï and satgurü is like a perfect combination of Savitä--- the subtle body of Sun God, the source of absolute prudence, eminence and energy, and Brahaspati --- the divine gurü who guides all manifestations of God. My "Sadhana Guru" had successfully practised the highest kinds of spiritual endeavors of Gäyatrï Upäsana. He shared his experiences with millions of devotees and propagated the divine knowledge of Gäyatrï in scientific light for the welfare of all beings. In no case, its Upäsana and Sädhanä can ever be harmful or risky. Every human being is free to perform Gäyatrï Upäsana. No one should have any suspicion in this regard. Devoted pursuits of spiritual practices always return blessed effects provided associated disciplines (not ritualistic) are obeyed sincerely. But Gäyatrï Sädhanä is more special in the sense that even in the case of some mistake on part of the devotee, there is no possibility of any negative effect or harm…. The divine mother always looks after all her children with immense love and care". Sincere devotion with purity of sentiments and righteousness of character never goes wrong" quoting Lord Krishna in the holy Gita --- Nehäbhikrama Näshoasti Pratyavä yo Na Vidyate | Swalpamupyasya Dharmasya Trä yate Mahatobhayät || Meaning: "Dedicated endeavor commenced along the righteous path is never lost; it continues (against all hindrances). It can never bring negative or untoward outcomes. The truth and purity of objective inspired by the inner self protects the serenity of the path. Such an endeavor can not end without auspicious success……" When every effort devoted to truly religious objectives protects the devotee from severe dangers and fears….., then why should there be any doubt about the success of the great Sädhanä of Gäyatrï which is devoted to collective arousal of the intellect of all beings along the righteous path…? The Upäsanä of Gäyatrï can be performed daily by meditation on rising sun and japa (rhythmic enunciation) of the Gäyatrï Mantra for a fixed duration of time. Austerity, purity of body, thoughts and sentiments, regularity of time and place, etc., are some simple disciplines required to be followed here. But, Mental recitation and contemplation on the Gäyatrï Mantra can be continued throughout the day whenever and wherever calmness and concentration of mind can be maintained naturally. Practice of the above kind could also be pursued by writing this mantra a fixed number of times every day. I apologize if I have offended anybodys belief, sentiments and faith. It could be because of my ignorance. May divine mother bless all. You can chant the mantra during office hours, but you must not recite Om Bhur Bhuva Svah. Only “tat savitur....etc”, otherwise you may anger the deity. So please do recite this mantra, as much as you can. Guest guest
[Visti] Yes. But if you haven't been given diksha of this mantra, then only add OM in the beginning, and not "Bhur Bhuva Svah" Dear Visti, I was tought this whole mantra by my late Grandfather during my childhood, Can I consider that as a diksha and recite it fully or should I delete the "Bhur Bhuva Svah" part. Regards, Ashish

Still, please recite the mantra as it was taught to you. Better to recite, than not to recite. Guest guest
Dear Visti & Ajith thanks for the clarifications. I apologise for the late response as I was taking part in a Maha rudram function here and was busy this week. It was a 2 day affair and with blessings from sringeri Mutt Acharya the function was performed culminatingin a Purna Ahuti. It was my first experience and I learned namakam & Chamakam from my Teacher in the last month and was practising. The feelings when the Homam was done is un explainable. On the whole it was a satisfying experience. Any how thanks for the explanations and one more thing before I close this mail. It was emphasised that Sandhya vandhanam coupled with Gayatri is a powerful mantra. Thanks onca again to you both for the clarifications. lakshman --- Ajit Krishnan <astro wrote: > .. hamsasso.aham .. > > > > 2.
