Dear Kasthuri Rangan,

"SwaasaRoga" - Is defined per Ayurveda as -)

Vihaya prakrutim vayu pranoatha kaphasamyuta |

Swaasayati urdwago bhootva tam swasam parichakshate ||

Meaning -) On association of Vata & Kapha Dosha the passages of

Pranavayu are obstructed, leads to excitment of vata to produce upward

movement of vata, i.e abnormal expiratory dyspnoea.

Ok to specify, Swasa Roga is divided into =)

1) Maha swasa

2) Urdwa swasa

3) Chinna swasa

4) Tamaka swasa

5) Kshudra swasa

Tamaka Swasa can be compared to Bronchial Asthama -) This is Kapha

dosha pradhana but involves vata & pitta as accessory. It is a

independent vyadhi & is a Sadhya Vyadhi/Curable disease. As per

Ayurveda more than 1 year old it is Chronic.

Virechana/Purgation is adviced in Tamaka Swasa as vata & kapha occupy

the pitta Sthana.

To this Jyotish forum, this is enough, I wont go deep.

Acharya Charaka, .. the brihattrayi & laghutrayi gives wonderful

medications for curing tamaka swasa like talisadi churna, sitopaladi

churna.

I will deal with the Medical Astrology part of it now -)

1) Placement of Mercury in Cancer with Sun.

2) Gulika or Saturn in 6th, aspects of Sun/rahu/ mars on this 6th.

3) If Moon is in PapaKartari Yoga

4) Saturn placed in 7th to moon or Sun in makara Rasi.

The above combinations give Swasa Roga.

Dear Samarth,

I have found that debilitated Mercury does the same thing. Or Mercury in

Cancer in the 6th. Allergies is also connected to asthma.

Congratulations on your graduation!

Dear Kasturi,

The connection of Rahu with a jala tatva rashi may need to be examined. Also,

the 4th house, the natural 4th house Cancer and its lord Moon. Cancer/4th house

denotes the chest region. Jala tatva creates kapha/shlehsma and Rahu causes the

breathing trouble. These elements need to figure partially or completely along

with other combinations for the diseases. Jala tatva is indicative of bronchial

asthma, as asthma may be of many kinds. I belive inability to breathe is also

known as emphysema. Asthma is more an allergy and is known to be a

psycho-somatic disease among other causes. Of course, this is superficial

rambling from an ex-asthma patient, doctors can elaborate better.

Om Gurave Namah

Dear Kasturi,

Namaste.

B.V. Raman, while describing the results of 6th house,

says" if the Sun in the 6th is afflicted in a fixed

sign, heart trouble, asthma may result. if in a

movable sign, weak chest and poor digestion may

result."

He also says that Rahu can cause difficulties in

breathing, moon in dusthana can lead to problems which

ultimately might end up in asthma.

Raman assigns "chest" to Mercury, as does Varaha

Mihira, who assigns "Chest" to Gemini. So afflictions

to these planets/signs could lead to asthma and

related problems.

Regards,

Lakshmi

Dear Lakshmi

Namaskaram. Many thanks for that knowledge. Mercury/Mithuna to me, is

more logical perhaps because it is the natural 3rd and possibly rules

respiratory system.I think in addition to affliction to Mercury/Mithuna,

Moon should also be affected. Sure, our Rahu has a major role.

But do you know the Sanskrit terms for these ailments?

Best wishes

Dear Visti,

Could you please explain this: I am trying to understand why Raman and

Varahamihira attributed respiratory system to Gemini. Of course, Gemini rules

vayu tatva and none other than Mercury can crush Rahu according to the Kala

Chakra. However, several questions rise. The respiratory organ, the lungs, is

in the 4th house/Cancer. When the air capillaries in the lungs get

narrow/constricted for a variety of reasons, and air cannot pass through,

emphysema or asthma occurs. If caused by bronchitis, then bronchial asthma

must have that connection with a jala tatva rashi and of course Rahu, who is

the main cause of breathlessness. Hence the association of 4th house/Moon/jala

tatva rashi/Rahu. Brendan had discussed this in detail in the west coast in

2003, so I am trying to remember. If Gemini is respiratory system, then Cancer

should become the stomach, is it not? Then what happens to the arms? Could you

explain?

Best regards,

Sarbani

Namasthe Michael,

Looking at the chart given,

Ascendent & Hora Lagna fall in Taurus.

Ghati Lagna falls in Virgo.

Parasara clearly tells -) Look at all the combination & arrangement

of planets from all the 3 lagnas i.e Bhava Lagna, Hora lagna & Ghati

Lagna.

>From Ghati Lagna Kanya, Saturn is in 6th , with Sun & Mars to

fullfill the combination for Tamaka Swaasa/ Asthma.

Dear Sarbani & Samarth

Thanks for your interesting posts. I would tend to think on similar

lines wrt Rahu, but I feel there is more to it. Swee has also commented

that Merc in Cancer or debilitated Mercury gives asthma. It looks like

"exceptions". I have seen a few charts (all relating to asthma and

wheezing) but they do not seem to match the dictums that you have given

Samarth. For example, I have attached a chart for study. This boy (my

friend's son) is suffering from regular attacks of asthma and wheezing.

Rahu occupies Mithuna and has an aspect on the 3rd. Moon also aspects

the 3rd. Ok, going by Sarbani, it has a drishti on the 4th as well.

Mercury perhaps has a role, because it is the natural 3rd lord and

if Mithuna rules respiratory tract, what is Cancer's (natural 4th)

role? This is confusing. Now lets get this clear first: Which sign

rules respiratory organs, Mithuna or Kataka?

If it is psycho-somatic, then we

should look at the Moon seriously, though by itself, Moon is associated

with jala. But tell me, isn't Rahu more famous for choking/strangling,

Sarbani? We have had experiences!!!

I wish we have some clarity on the dictums.

Best wishes

R. Kasthuri Rangan

p.s: Samarth, hearty congratulations on emerging in a new avatar as a

doctor. Good wishes.

Dear Kasturi,

The connection of Rahu with a jala

tatva rashi may need to be examined. Also, the 4th house, the natural

4th house Cancer and its lord Moon. Cancer/4th house denotes the chest

region. Jala tatva creates kapha/shlehsma and Rahu causes the breathing

trouble. These elements need to figure partially or completely along

with other combinations for the diseases. Jala tatva is indicative of

bronchial asthma, as asthma may be of many kinds. I belive inability to

breathe is also known as emphysema. Asthma is more an allergy and is

known to be a psycho-somatic disease among other causes. Of course,

this is superficial rambling from an ex-asthma patient, doctors can

elaborate better.

[Om Krishna Guru] Re: Asthma & Wheezing

Jaya Jagannatha

Dear Kasthuri Rangan,

"SwaasaRoga" - Is defined per Ayurveda as -)

Vihaya prakrutim vayu pranoatha kaphasamyuta |

Swaasayati urdwago bhootva tam swasam parichakshate ||

Meaning -) On association of Vata & Kapha Dosha the passages of

Pranavayu are obstructed, leads to excitment of vata to produce upward

movement of vata, i.e abnormal expiratory dyspnoea.

Ok to specify, Swasa Roga is divided into =)

1) Maha swasa

2) Urdwa swasa

3) Chinna swasa

4) Tamaka swasa

5) Kshudra swasa

Tamaka Swasa can be compared to Bronchial Asthama -) This is Kapha

dosha pradhana but involves vata & pitta as accessory. It is a

independent vyadhi & is a Sadhya Vyadhi/Curable disease. As per

Ayurveda more than 1 year old it is Chronic.

Virechana/Purgation is adviced in Tamaka Swasa as vata & kapha

occupy

the pitta Sthana.

HAre Krishna

Dear Sarbani,

I'm thinking,lIke with all things in jyotisha there are a variety

combinations wherein something can indicate afflictions.

Not only are there many reasons for asthma, there are several karaka

and such as well.Somebody may have asthma like symptoms because of

bronchitus,allergies,damage to lungs,lung cancer/emphasema/COPD/etc

etc. Nerves are also known to play apart in asthma.

FOr example: My father has lung cancer/emphesema and he has asthma

wheezes etc,for a number of years now

but he never had asthma as a child, he has mars and moon in cancer in

lagna, sat in 4th.His mother died from emphysema.

The whole respiratory track begins at the mouth, and extends a ways

down into chest, just like several organs, there is a cross over from

1)mapping of the physical placement in body of organ and then

2)the actual function of teh organ itself.

So we can say yes, gemini and cancer ,3,4th house etc are places to

look for afflcition,IN addition to disturbances to tattwa etc as thre

are many causes of difficult breathing.

For what its worth, Ive had lifelong asthma, I have Ketu in

gemini. But then also my 4th house/lord are afflicted as well.

Most often in charts Ive seen gemini involved in childhood, asthma

cases,etc

All the best,

Lakshmi

Looking forward to getting into all this with Brendan at West Coast

conference as well again this year!

P.S. Regarding hands:

Yes if you take a line and draw it from underarms across(for gemini)

the arms are included.

Ive noticed that many women with BREast cancer also have involvement

of gemini (without asthma) but then the LYMPTH nodes deep in armpits

held some cancer that needed to be removed.

Dear Kasturi,

I am also confused. Let me try and think aloud. According to the Kalapurusha,

Gemini would be the respiratory tract but Cancer would be the respiratory

organ, that is the lungs. The lungs together with the heart is the chest region

represented by Cancer. That is as per my understanding. Moon is considered as it

is the natural 4th house lord and jala tatva. Moon figures in tuberculosis and

pulmonary diseases according to Phaladeepika, diseases causing sleshma/kapha in

the lungs. Mercury is definitely important as it is vayu dosha. Now it is when

the dosha is afflicted or imbalanced that a disease occurs. Rahu causes such

afflictions to vayu. It is opposite Mercury in the Kala Chakra. Yes, Rahu

strangles but also causes breathlessness. Saturn's association I suppose should

be necessary to confirm that there will be a disease. Most importantly, we need

to look at the 6th house (aguntaka roga) and the 8th house (nija roga). This

classification of nija and aguntaka, internal and external disease is according

to the Prahsna Marga. Then we look at A6 and A8 of course, the manifestation of

the disease. Finally one uses Parayaya Dasa on the D6 chart to time the

disease.

In the given chart, Rahu in a vayu sign has rashi drsti on the 4th house. But

that is not enough. I suppose Saturn's aspect on the 6th house and 8th lord

confirms that there will be a disease. The conjunction of badhakesh and the 6th

lord also confirms that there will be disease. Not only that, the 6th lord and

the badhakesh is conjoined the 4th lord, perhaps showing that the disease will

be related to the 4th house body parts, namely chest. Now see the role of

Mercury and Rahu's placement in a vayu sign (hence afflicting vayu) and its

aspect on the 4th house. The 4th house itself is of course a jala tatva rashi.

This would show severe bronchial ashthma and lungs related problems. Has the

child been hospitalised because of this? Was 2003 onwards particularly bad

asthma for the child? Also how were the first four years? According to

Vimshottari however he has been running the dasha of the 6th lord from end

1989.

I may be way off the mark here specially where the doshas are concerned.

Brendan has been teaching a lot on how to see the predominant dhatu in a natal

chart and their afflictions. And I am trying to recall as there was a long talk

on asthma and chest afflictions. He used my chart as one of the examples in

class, showing how 8th lord Venus together with Rahu in Cancer (natural 4th

house/jala tatva) and aspected by Saturn gave bronchial asthma. Now I am not

sure of anything that I have written above! Also Gemini maybe ruling

tridosha...

Jaya Jagannatha

Namasthe Lakshmiji,

Jyotish & Ayurveda , allied Indian Vedic Sciences Strongly stand

on 'Darshana" contributed by "SankhyaNyayaVisheshika" Schools

of Philosophies. So here in Ayurveda Disease classification, stages,

the Lakshanas/Signs & Symtoms etc are all into different headings

with a different approach than Modern School Of Medicine.

So it is complicated to link Modern Medicine with Ayurveda or

jyotish its like - Fitting a "Square" Plug in a "Round" Hole. Hope

you can get a clear Picture of what is being communicated.

For Example -) Seeing your posts, the way you write messeges - You

come under the "Pitta- Kapha Prakrithi". There are general 40

diseases classified as per Pitta Dosha & 20 diseases classified as

per Kapha Dosha. As per the various "Vishama Samyoga" of "Indriyas"

with the "indriarthas", "Pragnaparadha" Consuming the

wrong "Ahara"/Food & "Vihara" not keeping in line with the seasons

etc you are liable to get some problems. Again these have various

different stages " The Shat Kriya Kalas", by Acharya Sushrutha for

the disease or impairment of Doshas.

So its Wise to not link Modern medicine directly to Jyotish, but to

first diagonise the Disease through chart from Ayurveda & later Co-

relate the appropriate Ayurvedic Disease term to the Modern Disease.

After April 12th, will be sitting down to work on Medical Astrology

or jyotish - Ayurveda . Its a very ancient science, hardly any

Ayurvedic Students study jyotish or Vice-versa. Hope study in

Ayurveda & knowledge in Jyotish helps to broaden the appraoch &

understanding in this field.

Prayers to Lord Dhanwantari.

Dear Samarth,

{So it is complicated to link Modern

Medicine with Ayurveda or jyotish

its like - Fitting a "Square" Plug in a "Round" Hole. Hope you

can get a clear Picture of what is being communicated.}

I'm giving you an excerpt of Kaulaka by Goelji. Hopefully, in

time you can shape the square plug to fit the round hole :-)

Kauluka as part of Drekkana :

(i) Each Drekkana contains two Kaulukas of

5° each. They are termed as 1st and 2nd Kauluka.

(ii) First (1st) Kauluka

of each Drekkana represents evils and diseases of

internal origins.

(iii) Second (2nd) Kauluka of each Drekkana

represents evils and diseases of extern origin.

(iv) Order of counting

:

(a) For odd signs the order is

Zodiacal.

(b) For even sign the order is

reversed.

© If Rahu/Ketu

is placed in any Kauluka, the assigned order will be

reversed. This will mean

that :

(c.1) For

odd signs, if Rahu/Ketu are placed in any Kauluka, the order will reversed.

(c.2) For

even signs, if Rahu/Ketu are placed in any Kauluka, the order of counting will

remain Zodiacal.

(Ref. : Jaimini Sutra 3.3.66)

(v) Meaning of diseases of internal

origin (linked with 1st Kauluka) :

The evils and diseases of internal

origin, when a planet is placed in 1st Kauluka, may

point

out to such possibilities like :

(a) The disease is in

an internal organs(s).

(b) The cause of evils and diseases

is not foreseen or known. This includes causes of such

nature which originate on account of

association of Fifth, Eighth or Badhak houses.

© The problems are hereditary in nature.

(vi) Meaning of diseases of External

origin (linked with 2nd Kauluka) :

The evils and diseases of external

origin, when a planet is placed in 2nd Kauluka, may

point out to such possibilities like :

(a) The problems arise in account of

wrong food habits, social and moral conduct and

negligent behaviour.

(b) By known causes, and enemies (Sixth

and Ninth houses).

© Problems arising out due to

accidents, non-payment of loans, wrong medication and

treatment ignoring the advice of elders and

social norms.

Each Kauluka

of a Drekkana help to arrive at a precise cause, of

course, not

independently, but with the help of other

Divisional charts.

(vii) Role of Kauluka

will be illustrated with the help of Example horoscope I, given in the end of

this

paper.

Moon (15°46') :

It is placed in 2nd Kauluka of its Drekkana in even sign. Moon will

given the results of 1st Kauluka — diseases on account of in internal

origin.

Mars (12°5') :

It is placed in 1st Kauluka of its Drekkana in even sign. Mars will give

the results of 2nd Kauluka

diseases of external origin.

Rahu/Ketu (22°56') :

Rahu/Ketu are in 1st Kauluka

of even sign and will give the results of

1st Kauluka.

Saturn (6°50') :

It is in 2nd Kauluka of even sign and will give the

results of 1st

Kauluka.

[Om Krishna Guru] Re: Asthma &

Wheezing

Jaya Jagannatha

Namasthe Lakshmiji,

   Jyotish &

Ayurveda , allied Indian Vedic Sciences Strongly stand

on 'Darshana" contributed by "Sankhya"

"NyayaVisheshika" Schools

of Philosophies. So here in Ayurveda Disease

classification, stages,

the Lakshanas/Signs & Symtoms etc are all into

different headings

with a different approach than Modern School Of

Medicine.

So it is complicated to link Modern Medicine with

Ayurveda or

jyotish its like - Fitting a "Square" Plug

in a "Round" Hole. Hope

you can get a clear Picture of what is being

communicated.

For Example -) Seeing your posts, the way you write

messeges - You

come under the "Pitta- Kapha Prakrithi".

There are general 40

diseases classified as per Pitta Dosha & 20

diseases classified as

per Kapha Dosha. As per the various "Vishama

Samyoga" of "Indriyas"

with the "indriarthas",

"Pragnaparadha" Consuming the

wrong "Ahara"/Food & "Vihara"

not keeping in line with the seasons

etc you are liable to get some problems. Again these

have various

different stages " The Shat Kriya Kalas", by

Acharya Sushrutha for

the disease or impairment of Doshas.

 So its Wise to

not link Modern medicine directly to Jyotish, but to

first diagonise the Disease through chart from

Ayurveda & later Co-

relate the appropriate Ayurvedic Disease term to the

Modern Disease.

After April 12th, will be sitting down to work on

Medical Astrology

or jyotish - Ayurveda . Its a very ancient science,

hardly any

Ayurvedic Students study jyotish or Vice-versa. Hope

study in

Ayurveda & knowledge in Jyotish helps to broaden

the appraoch &

understanding in this field.

Prayers to Lord Dhanwantari.

Dear Samarth,

Mine is a past history. This is the non-astrological details: It started in age

17 in Rahu dasha. It was very bad till age 26/7. Initially on regular

allopathy. Then did intensive in-house treatment at a naturopathy institute in

Bangalore for 2 months. After that tried Ayurveda, Tibetan medicine from Bhutan

and of course homeopathy. At age 25 I shifted my place of residence from a humid

climate to a very dry one. That change of residence to a different city started

to wean of the disease slowly, until it went completely once Jupiter dasa

started. In the meantime, alternative medicine taught better management of

disease and a lifestyle change, which helped. Now I am completely ok!! I even

go to the gym, unthinkable at one point of time. Accompanied by atopical

eczema. No heredity in my case. Dust allergy. What really helped was

homeopathy, naturopathy, yoga and Tibetan medicine in different stages, and

knowing how to manage the diseases, like what to eat and not to eat, when to

eat, etc.etc. Birth data: 30th June, 1962, 00:13:32, Calcutta.

Best regards,

Sarbani

Om Gurave Namah

Dear Kasturi,

I tried unsuccessfully to get you the sanskrit names

of Asthma and wheezing. when i get them i'll write to

you again.

I think there is a lot of difference between Chest and

heart. Moon and Cancer rule Heart and not chest.

Heart deals primarily with blood (jala tattwa-Moon a

significator for blood), while Chest primarily means

lungs & other related areas dealing with Vayu tattva.

Rahu in mithuna would cause difficulty in breathing,

while Rahu in kataka might obstruct the blood flow. I

think the nature of asthma would depend on the nature

of planet afflicting Gemini/Mercury. I guess Rahu

would give asthma related to pollution, while Moon

might give bronchial asthma etc.

Anyway, I am hardly the expert and await the views of

the learned.

Regards,

Lakshmi

Om Gurave Namah

Dear Kasturi,

I forgot to add that "arms" assigned to Gemini also

indicate vayu tattwa, because they indicate the

maximum vyapakatwa or the maximum extent of reach of

the physical body and it is known that Vayu has the

maximum vyapakatwa of the "tangible" elements. I am

not counting Akasha as it is intangible. This

assignment of Parasara is perfectly in sync with

Varaha mihira's assignment of respiratory system to

Mithuna and is not at all contradictory.

The multiple arms of Devi/devatas indicate their

respective reach in various directions. It is also the

reason why a Mahapurusha is supposed to be

"Ajaanubaahum"...indicating long arms and maximum

reach/influence.

You spread you arms..."spreading" is directly

indicative of vayu tattwa which is responsible for

reproduction.

On the whole, I feel that the "forces" driving chest

and heart are totally different and the assignments

need to be understood in that light.

Regards,

Lakshmi

Jaya Jagannatha

Namasthe Sarbaniji,

Your Rahu is Positioned with Venus, Venus is a VataKaphaja

Planet. Venus is in Shatru Rasi, i.e making the Vatakapha Vitiated

or impaired in their balance. More is that Saturn ( R) of Vataja

Nature aspects the combination, more vitiation by Vata Dosha.

In Swasa the Prana Vaha Srotas is affected, The PranaVaha Srotas

has the "Hrudaya" as basic adhisthana/ i.e 4th House. i.e Puppusa or

Lungs affected.

More to add is that Kataka Rasi is a "Anupa Desha" Rasi or Rasi

predominant with Kapha Dosha. Thus during Rahu Dasa you were in a

Kapha predominant place which aggravated your problem. As your

Jupiter Dasa Started, Jupiter in a Sadharana Desha i.e predominant

with all doshas, More so Jupiter becomes a Mitra to Shani in the

Horoscope, causing the pacification of the doshas as Jupiter is in

Mitra Rasi.

Sweeji, has given information on Kaulika, will try co-relating it

with your chart.

Om Gurave Namah

Namaste Samarth,

Why was the affliction to Mercury in the 3rd house by

waning moon and mars was not considered in this case?

And, I think the problem could have started in

Rahu-Saturn-Mercury. Rahu would give the results of

dispositor moon who is clearly afflicting mercury, who

also happens to be the native's AK.

Regards,

Lakshmi

I don't think i need to say anything more.

Jaya Jagannatha

Namasthe Lakshmiji,

Firstly would remember your wonderful lecture in the Jagannatha

Puri Conference 2004.

In "Swasa Vyadhi" Kapha Dosha gets accumilated in the lower

portions of Puppusa/lungs & Affects the function of "Udana"

& "Prana" vayu. Thats why in Asthama patients they have difficulty

to expiration i.e main function of "Udana vayu" where

as "inspiration" i.e of Prana vayu is done with some amount of Ease.

So when we talk of the lower portion of Chest, it does come under

the 4th House.

"Hridaya" in Ayurveda itself is a little controversy, "Hridaya" is

considered the "Heart", while reference of "Hridaya" in Ayurveda is

also for the attributes of Emotions etc.

"Hridaya" is Adhisthana/seat for "Ojus" . The Dhatu which is Pure

& the essence of all the Sapta Dhatus i.e 7 Dhatus.

In Asthma to the immunity level in the body is down, in most

respiratory problems the Immunity is low. 'Ojus" is compaired to

Immunity in the body in Ayurveda. So it can be clearly concluded

that the "Hridaya" Sthana 4th House is the Adhisthana for

Swasa/Asthma.

When looking into various Asthma charts, especially after SriPathi

padathi house division, the 4th is always afflicted with Vata &

Sleshma Dosha.

In Smt. Sarbaniji's chart, the Venus which afflicted the 4th.

Venus is a highly Vata Sleshma Planet. This Vata & Kapha/sleshma

dosha of Venus is impaired by Rahu & the aspect of another Vataja

Planets Saturn.

Happy ugadi & may this new Calnder Year bring prosperity in your

life.
