Graha and Bhava Balas

Dear Balaji,

>>I just finished reading Shri BV Raman's book "Graha and Bhava

Balas." Given my hatred for math, I'm happy that astro SW can do

these things automatically! :-)<<

Indeed it's a great boon having jyotish software to do all those

tedious calculations for us. However there are some negatives also.

For instance, when I did all my calculations by hand, I was able to

relax in the knowledge that the calculations were correct. I also

think that we become very lazy when we rely on the computer solely

and slowly we lose the skills that we once had to calculate a chart

by hand. Another important point I've discovered is that computer

software is not always reliable. In PL for instance if you have the

option set up to calculate both transit chart and varshaphala (as

well as natal chart) you'll find, by casting a chart for the current

time, Gulika is in a different house (in these two charts) than it

is in the natal chart??

>>What are your thoughts on these things? Is ShadBala better, or

Vimshopak? How does one evaluate Bhava Bala?<<

I think it's a good idea to consider both. A planet that fails to

gain sufficient ShadBala may be extremely strong in Vimsopaka. (If

I'm not mistaken a planet with Vimsopaka strength exceeding 15 will

give excellent results)...so, as with all things, it's a matter of

balance.

>>Shri BV Raman tells that too much focus on math can spoil our

intuition. How much is too much? This is an important question

for me, because my capacity for intuition is better than my

capacity for maths. I don't want to try going towards math, and

lose what little intuition I possess!<<

It's a bit of a double edged sword I think....practice, practice,

practice with the maths (for years if necessary) until it becomes

instinctual; And then more practice, practice, practice (for years

if necessary) reading charts, and wallah! intuition is born!! It

can't happen overnight without divine revelation, I'm afraid - which

then puts us in the realm of the Yogi Karve's of this world.

The trouble with computers and particularly with these forums is

that people feel the pressure to intuitively interpret a chart after

only a few years practice...mostly it's a miss and hit affair...for

all of us! And when mistakes are made they come under the critical

judgement of many. The lists certainly can be a minefield of

criticisms and controversies. But it balances out, I guess, with the

priceless experience gained from making those mistakes :-))

Best Wishes,

Mrs. Wendy

Hi Wendy and all,

Can there be a discussion or advice on what is the best Vedic computer software

to use - or - a combination of such for various techniques in understanding and

delineation. I know my self I use one program (Goravani) as of now and want to

very much expand.

Dear Debra,

I have both Goravani Jyotish and PL 2000. The one I prefer (and use

consistently) is PL.

Dear Debra,

I use Shri Jyoti Star and am very happy with it. I would recommend that you went

through the reviews on this site:

http://www.soulhealing.com/index.htm

You can choose one depending on your needs.

Regards,

Venkat
