Mercury/Jupiter/Lord Rule and Strengths

Dear Visti,

Could you please clarify these questions regarding use of the

Mercury/Jupiter/Lord rule for determining strength of planets/signs.

1. In what situations is the Mercury/Jupiter/Lord rule used and in what

applications is it omitted and not considered in determining strength?

2. Is only rasi drishti considered in determining if the planet is aspected

by Mercury, Jupiter, or its Lord, or is graha drishti also considered? (For

example, conjunctions and oppositions in which planets have graha drishti but

not rasi drishti.)

3. If graha drishti is considered in determining aspect, then is the aspect

only considered from Mercury/Jupiter/Lord on that planet, or is the aspect

considered in the reverse direction as well. (For example, if Saturn aspects

Mercury but Mercury does not aspect Saturn, is this considered or is it

omitted?)

Do the two planets need to be in mutual aspect, or is the "one-directional"

aspect the only aspect that is relevant? (Again, this is irrelevant if only

rasi drishti is considered, since planets aspecting by rasi drishti are, by

definition, always in mutual aspect.)

Thanks so much for your help in clarifying these issues. Also, I wanted to

thank you for all of the incredible time and energy you have been putting into

answering student's questions. It has been enormously helpful for all!

Best Wishes,

Susan

1. In what situations is the

determining strength?

[Visti] This rule is

used to see the resources a sign has. Jupiter shows wealth, Mercury shows

friends and the lord is itself the resource of the house. So it is omitted in

cases where we are not concerned with resources. In dasas like Narayana, this

is very important, as the more resources a sign has, the more likely it is to

give results compared to another – if you have money you can buy a house.

But when reckoning which lagna is more likely for various other people, or

seeing strength of bodies (lagnas) then this is omitted, as here wealth does

not make you more or less of a physical incarnation… You don’t have

to have money to be beautiful.

[Visti] Only Rasi dristi.

Dear Visti,

Thanks so much for your clear reply to my question and for the explanation

underlying this rule.

So, my understanding is that "resources" refers to what the native "has" or

acquires, (i.e. wealth (Jupiter), friends (Mercury), or the resources of the

house overall (Lord)), rather than the native's own nature, who they "are",

(i.e. personal qualities, physical characteristics, abilities, weaknesses,

etc.).

Is this correct?

In what other applications, other than Narayana dasa, is the

Mercury/Jupiter/Lord rule used? Is it used when one is determining gender or

characteristics

of siblings/children? Is it used in calculating Drig dasa? (Or is it

omitted, since Drig dasa is concerned with spiritual development rather than

material

resources?)

When is AK used in determining sign/planetary strength?

Is AK used in all contexts, except Narayana dasa? (Is it used in Drig dasa,

since it has a strong influence on spiritual path?) Is a planet's

relationship with the AK also determined by rasi drishti only, or is

conjunction,

opposition or other graha drishti also considered? (If so, what if AK is Rahu?

Is

Ketu considered aspected by AK Rahu, or is it omitted since the Ra/Ke aspect is

fixed?)

Sources of Strength are used so frequently and impact so many things, that I

have wanted to be sure that I am understanding and utilizing these principles

correctly. Also, when the issue involves dual rulership of Scorpio or

Aquarius, it sounds like there are a lot of contexts in which the effects of

both

planets (i.e. Mars/Ketu or Saturn/Rahu) need to be taken into consideration.

Thanks again for all your time and help in clarifying this issue.

Best Wishes,

Susan

[Visti] Your welcome.

right.

[Visti] No, not at

all.

10.0pt">Is it used in calculating Drig dasa? (Or is it

omitted, since Drig dasa is concerned with

spiritual development rather than material

resources?)

[Visti] It is actually

used in Drig Dasa, only here the 3 planets act as Gurus, giving spiritual

guidance – hence the resource has changed quality. Point is here that we only

apply this to the antara dasa calculation.

When is AK used in determining sign/planetary

strength?

[Visti] I have asked

this in the past, but am still unclear as far as Dasas are concerned. Remember

that these rules can be applied to more than just dasas.

font-family:"Courier New"">

[Visti] Actually, as

far as I know, the AK –rule is used in very few dasa-systems, you can

speculate that the ak-kendradi rasi dasa would have a strong predominance of

the ak. Yes the strength is only sign aspect.

[Visti] Yes, always

consider them both when reading a chart, but when calculating dasas, always

find the stronger of the two.

Dear Visti,

Thanks for your reply and for clarifying my rasi drishti vs. graha drishti

question. The whole system for determining strengths is becoming much clearer

to me now.

As far as the rule of strength using AK, I was trying to think of situations,

other than in dasa systems, where this rule is used in determining planetary

strength. I just couldn't come up with a good example. Is AK rule used in

all applications not involving dasa systems, or just in some of these

circumstances?

The Mercury/Jupiter/Lord rule seems to be used only in dasa systems, like

Narayana dasa and Drig antardasa, as you stated. (Thanks for that info about

Drig dasa, BTW. I did not realize that it was used in Drig antardasa

calculation

only and not Drig mahadasa.) I couldn't think of any non-dasa related

applications in which the Mercury/Jupiter/Lord rule is used to determine

strength.

Am I right about this?

Thanks again for all your help.

Best Wishes,

Susan
