The fractured nature of the electoral verdict has brought to the fore the apprehension with regard to the longevity of the regime in office. Therefore now perhaps is the time to venture into the possible tenure expected for the Government, and for this the muhurta chart for oath taking is the most appropriate tool available. For those unfamiliar with the concept and application of Muhurta, the topic has been dealt with in Vedic Astrology Volume 3 number 2 issue of March April 1999. In that article we have discussed the general principles involved in Muhurta in as much detail as feasible given the constraints of space. The subject matter of the present article is the application of Muhurta, specifically to oath taking ceremony. Permit me to take this opportunity to refresh the subject for the benefit of those who are uninitiated in the subject. The oath taking ceremony, as we understand it today is akin to the coronation ceremony of the earlier eras when monarchy was the order of the day in India. In fact the system of monarchy still survives in some parts of the world it has lost its position as the prevalent and popular form of government. We shall attempt to grasp the significance of Muhurta in oath taking, more so in the present context when we seem to be having frequently changing governments of varying tenures, all short lived, being unable to last their designated life span. Perhaps Muhurta is the key and may well hold out the ever elusive explanation as to the reason why a government enjoying a comfortable majority and apparently stable collapses, while another government being in minority and apparently on the brink of collapse, carries on to complete its full term. The astrological factors laid down for coronation / oath taking are numerous. In earlier times the coronation ceremony would normally be at a time of ones choosing, thereby permitting a much wider range of possibilities vis-a-vis the Muhurta and the possibility of satisfying a majority of the astrological factors. In the present scenario such luxuries are not available to the rulers of the day. They have to work within the available time and various other limitations and therefore are unable to do so. However the politicians who have faith in astrology, and those who do not are definitely a minority, attempt their utmost to take the oath using the best available Muhurta under the time restrictions as may be present. GENERAL FACTORS The astrological factors are enumerated below: PLANETS · Sun should be uttarayan, i.e. Sun in signs from Capricorn to Gemini, broadly the period from mid January till mid June. · Jupiter, Venus and Mars should be rising. · Sun, Mars, natal lagna lord, muhurta lagna lord, present dasha lord should be in strength. · Avoid Sun being dakshinayana; i.e. Sun in signs from Cancer to Sagittarius, broadly the period from mid June till mid January. · Avoid Sun in Pisces. NAKSHATRAS The nakshatras considered auspicious for oath taking/coronation are : · All short nakshatras, i.e. Hasta, Ashwini, Pushya and Abhijit. · All friendly nakshatras, i.e. Mrigshira, Revati, Chitra and Anuradha. · All fixed nakshatras, i.e. Uttaraphalguni, Uttarashada, Uttarabhadrapad and Rohini. · In addition Jyestha and Shravana. DAYS & TIME The classification of days & time is as under : · Sunday, Monday, Thursday and Friday are best. · Avoid Tuesday. · Avoid night time, i.e. from sunset to sunrise. TITHES · Avoid rikta tithes, i.e. tithes 4, 9 and 14. ASCENDANT The ascendant or the rising signs considered suitable are sirsodaya rasis, i.e. Gemini, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio and Aquarius. SPECIFIC FACTORS The ascendant having the sign falling in 3/6/10/11 from the natal Moon sign or the natal lagna is considered good. Benefics placed in quadrant houses 1/4/7/10, trine houses 5/9 and in houses 2/3/11 are considered good. Malefics placed in trishadaya houses 3/6/11 give auspicious results. Malefics placed in houses other than 3/6/11 cause varied problems as under: 1. When in the ascendant may cause disease to the ruler. 2. When in the eighth house may cause trouble to the son. 3. When in houses 2/12 may cause financial crisis. 4. When in houses 4/7 may cause loss of authority/chair. 5. When in the tenth house may make the ruler to be lethargic. Moon placed in houses 6/8/12 in the Muhurta lagna will not be good for the longevity of the ruler. In other words a careful and comprehensive analysis of all the houses and their effects on specific functional areas has to be studied in detail before choosing a particular moment for oath taking or coronation. Perhaps the situation is appropriate to make but a humble attempt to apply the principles of Muhurta, or electional astrology, specific to oath taking in real time to the swearing in chart of the Prime Minister of India. Shri Manmohan Singh : Prime Minister of India 2004 The Oath taking ceremony (Muhurta) of Prime Minister Shri Manmohan Singh: May 22, 2004 at 17:32:30 hours, time zone +5:30, New Delhi, India, 28N39, 077E13. The Ascendant is Libra. Ketu is posited in the lagna having degree conjunction with the lagna degree. Ninth and twelfth lord Mercury is posited in the seventh house Aries alongwith Rahu. Sun is in Taurus in the eighth house. Ninth house Gemini has a host of planets posited. Starting with the lagna and eighth lord Venus in retrogression, tenth lord Moon, second and seventh lord Mars and last but not the least yogakaraka Saturn having the fourth and fifth lordship. Note the exchange between the seventh and the ninth, Mars with Mercury. A number of yogas, some good and others not so good, arise as a result of this conglomeration. Third and sixth lord Jupiter is placed in the third upchaya house in Leo in the eleventh house. The panchanga variables are not particularly favourable. Tithi is shukla tritya, which is a Jaya tithi. Vaara is shanivar having Saturn as its lord. Nakshatra is Ardra, which described as teekshna-daruna, ferocious and bitter in other words. It may be mentioned that that there is no yoga resulting from any of the panchanga factors present. Yoga is shoolam indicating angry and quarrelsome. Chandrabala and Tarabala cannot be ascertained as the natal details of the Prime Minister are not available. Therefore we are constrained in not being able to judge the effect of the other specific factors based on the natal chart of the native. The lagna is movable and does not normally indicate stability, though it is sirsoday and acceptable for oath taking. Notable in the chart is the presence of all the planets in the visible half of the horoscope indicating the open nature of the government and its activities. None of the planets is exalted or debilitated. Also take note of the fact that there is a cluster/pair of planets sharing the same degree. The ascendant lord is well placed in the ninth house in a friendly sign indicating a strong moral/ethical stance of the government. Since it is retrograde the likelihood of hiccups in the functioning can very well be expected. Presence of Ketu in the lagna certainly does not add to the comfort, though fits the personality of the Prime Minister as a person above the melee of the political conundrum. The exchange between the seventh and ninth lords indicates a thrust towards trade, commerce and foreign relations. Second lord place in the ninth house may not spell financial abundance being in the eighth from the second house. This is further confirmed by the placement of the eleventh lord in the adverse eighth house. Third house receiving malefic aspects points to the worsening of relations with the neighbours though the situation will be contained due to the aspect of its lord Jupiter. Fourth lord in the ninth house under mixed influence and the fourth house being aspected by Mars indicates the possibility of the domestic situation remaining on the burner and reaching the boiling point now and then. Besides putting a question mark on the internal situation it also casts a shadow over the longevity of the parliament. The increasing role of the opposition, fair sex and the international community is likely with the interplay of the seventh, ninth and twelfth houses. It also speaks of a predominant occupation with foreign affairs. Longevity being a signification of the eighth does not provide any particular comfort. Tenth lord Moon in the ninth is placed well though under a mixed influence. The Navamsa lagna is Pisces, a dual sign, but heavily afflicted, not a good factor. The lagna of the muhurta chart is the eighth in the navamsa chart having its lord Venus posited therein thereby strengthening it. In the six twelve axis of the navamsa chart we have Mercury and Jupiter in the sixth and Moon and Mars in the twelfth, an interesting placement. An indication that application of sound economic wisdom coupled with prudent public stance resulting in economic progress despite multifarious constraints of all kinds. Again none of the planets is exalted or debilitated. Mars, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus are with above average ashtakvarga points while Sun, Moon and Saturn are below average. Lagna and therefore the government is below average at 23. In contrast the seventh house representing the opposition is strong with 34. The tenth house has 28 points indicating perhaps that the stature of the Prime Minister is without the political clout. Sun, Jupiter and Saturn have the highest shadbala; Mercury and Venus are next, Moon is the weakest with Mars occupying the third spot. The longevity of the government is unlikely to be long as the calculations indicate a madhyaayu period. However these longevity calculations are at times not necessarily the governing factor. Our experience and various case studies published confirm the fact that mathematical calculation of longevity is just that; a mathematical calculation! The oath taking ceremony has been held during the dasha of Rahu Mercury. Both planets are conjunct in the seventh house of partners pointing to the maneuvering that preceded the government formation. It is rather a tricky dasha period and is best in the past. Treating the 120 year Vimshottari Dasha cycle to be equivalent to 5 years as it is the maximum possible lifespan of the government, the dasha calculations are to be suitably modified. The dasha of Rahu will run for less than five months and should be a reasonably turbulent period for the government. Next will be seven months of Jupiter extending through till end May of 2005, followed by nine and a half months of Saturn. While the government is likely to remain in crisis control mode throughout its tenure, let us hope that the events do not get out of control resulting in adverse circumstances for the government that it finds difficult to weather. There are major transits taking place end August/early September when both the major planets Jupiter and Saturn crossover to Virgo and Cancer respectively within days of each other. In the muhurta chart Jupiter moves from a house having 33 ashtakvarga bindus to one having just 23 while the Saturn’s transit is from a house with 28 bindus to another with similar number of bindus. Jupiter’s transit cannot augur very well for the government, as its potential to give favourable results stands diminished. In case any of us are wondering as to why a more suitable muhurta was not chosen when information and availability both were at hand, permit me to share with you words of wisdom. “All of us, you and I included, apparently go about selecting an opportune moment or muhurta as appropriate for a particular activity. However the fact is different. It is the time that chooses us according to what is waiting to unfold from the storehouse of destiny.” These are words of an eminent Jyotish Guru that have borne out every time without fail. Given the assessment above, and not losing sight of the fact that we are constrained in the absence of the natal details of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh thereby being unable to have the benefit of analyzing the specific factors, it may be mentioned that the Muhurta chart is not strong, and probably chosen under varied constraints including the Constitutional requirements, the strengths notwithstanding. This is because the Panchanga variables have a very significant role to play in a Muhurta chart. The entire time that the government may be in office is likely to be full of contradictions and surrounded by controversies. Perhaps every six months or so the government is likely to be subjected to an acid test of sorts and it may be worthwhile to revisit the life span after a period of two years. Of course only if the government is still in office at that time! New and Improved Mail - Send 10MB messages! Win 1 of 4,000 free domain names from Enter now.
