respected sir,

sorry..i am responding late.there was some problem with getting connected.

thanks for this very informative post. perhaps Mantreshwara was more familier

with "Shasta' so he used that form . though in 'VISHNU SAHASTRANAM' stotra also

we find word 'Shata' which i took as 'one who rules the world'.

anyways..i am very happy to know that in Kerala.. there are so many temples of

Lord Ayappa by the name of 'Shasta'

thanks and regards,

triptika

EXPLAINE WHO IS 'SHASTA' ?

Dear triptika,I know of no direct connection between Saturn and Moon and Lord

Ayappa. Perhaps it is related to Hariharaputra's birth out of an unusual union

where Mohini (Vishnu) enticed Shiva. This is quite out of character for Shiva,

master of self control, the great Yogi. Note that Saturn signifies indulging

in sex pleaures and dressing oneself for amorous appeals (see Uttara

Kalamrita). Ayappa is regarded as an incarnation of Lord Sastha (sAsthA), and

there are currently many Sastha temples in Kerala:Ariankavu,

PalaruviSasthamkottaKulathupuzhaVadakkunnatham in ThrissurChamravattom

(Malappuram District)Thamaramkulangara Sree Dharmasastha Temple in

Tripurnithuraand one new one in Tamil Nadu:Poonamallee Sri Dharma Sastha

TempleAccording to Parasara Saturn's deity is Brahma. According to Mantreswara

Saturn dwells in Sastha temple. Sanjay Rath has written that Harihara said the

deity for Saturn is Sastha or Kiratha, and the Jaimini has given Narayana as

the deity for Saturn. David Frawley has given Shiva, Kala, Kali, terrible

forms of the Divine and the archtype of the Divine grandfather for

Saturn.According to Parasara Moon's deith is Jala (Water). According to

Mantreswara Moon worships Sastha. Sanjay Rath has written that Harihara said

the deity for Moon is Durga, Kali, or Chamundi, and the Jaimini has given Gauri

as the deity for Moon. David Frawley has given Goddess, Divine Mother,

Mahadevi, Mahashakti, Parvati, Lakshmi, Tara, Kwan Yin, Isis, Virgin Mary for

Moon., "triptika" <triptika@h...> wrote:>
