Guest guest
Dear Ajit,Just shift the focus from exact meanings for a moment...or you will miss the wood for the trees . Try to approach this from a different view point. Do read the Markandeya Purana. It is from Gouri's body that the three gunas emerged. Tamo guna emerged in the form of Mahakali, Rajas emerged as Mahalakshmi and Satva as Mahasaraswati. It is from these three forms of shakti that all the various rupas of the devi emerges. Annapurna is a sub-form of Shrim shakti or Mahalaskhmi. We are not getting into the details of Annapurna's form and nature here. Tamo shakti is represented by Saturn (Kali) and its sub-forms by Mars (Chamunda) and Rahu (Durga) as well as by permutation combinations of Venus and Rahu and Mars and`Rahu...but lets not get into that now. So though Annapurna is married to Shiva, she represents Shrim, and is hence represented by Venus. Moon represents Devi in general...and Moon is also Shrim.... We supplicate to her and request/beg for alms/food as a child does to a mother. Hence the stotra's constant refrain is "bhikshaam dehi...maataannapurneshvari".I agree that bounty (of food etc) is represented by Shri, but I did not consider Annapurneshwari to be in this category. Perhaps I am mistaken. ajit, "Sarbani Sarkar" <sarbani@s...> wrote:> Dear Ajit, Rao and others,> > The Moon represents the Divine Mother in her ubiquitous all pervading form.> Mother Mary will also be represented by the Moon, so as all the forms of the> Devi as we worship her. Guest guest
Dear Ajit, Above all, the main reason why I adhere to Venus representing Annapurna is that, as mentioned earlier, Prashna Marga clearly states that Venus in a satwik sign specifically represents Annapurna. Best regards, Sarbani Ajit Krishnan [astro] Wednesday, October 29, 2003 2:13 PM [sJC: Achyuta Gurukul] Re: ishta devata hamsassoham Dear Sarbani, You had translated annapurna as a bounty of food. This didn't sound quite right, so I took out my dictionary. puurNa also means "filled with tears" or compassion. Thus, she is one who gives food out of compassion. In my opinion, this is a better meaning. She is the one that feeds a poor (ignorant) child out of compassion. Disclaimer: my dictionary translation may be off the mark. ajit , "Ajit Krishnan" <astro@m...> wrote: > hamsassoham > > Dear Sarbani et al, > > I have been taught to worship Annapurneshwari in order to ask for > compassion, ensuring that basic needs are met, and not for > extravagance.
