Guest guest
Dear Narasimha Ji and list, While, other people's problem with the commercial version of JH may be the payment, I have a different concern, which is as follows: You have mentioned that the commercial version of JH uses Machine ID for verification of key or codes. This may be very ideal for your purpose of protecting the software so that it is not shared amongst friends, etc. However, some of us [i mean people like me who are in IT industry and also many I know who are just home users] upgrade our personal computers almost every 3 months. This means that if we register, say a particular machine ID with you today, three months down the road, the software would be useless for us as we would be going for even faster and better version of either Intel or Intel Celeron processors as well as different versions of Mother Board itself! The upgradation time may not necessarily be three months, but judging at my past upgrade schedule, I have changed the mother boards as well as the processors at least ONCE in 4 months. In this case, if I were forced to pay US$185 to you every three or four months, it would be very expensive for me to own the software, even though I think it is a masterpiece and a much needed tool for our learning with all the features and dasas. Well... Think about the above. In today's fast processor upgrade environment, I would hardly figure people would be keeping their old machines beyond ONE YEAR. And I am speaking on behalf of many in North America, Europe and other developed countries. So this is one condition and reason, that those of us who want to buy the professional version of JH; are currently thinking 10 times before doing so. P.s.: I could have send this message as personal email to you. However, I thought it would be appropriate to put it at our list as this may affect many people like me. Besides, I think there are many other ways to ensure that people do not exchange the software between friends even without using the Machine ID variable in your C++ programming, Microsoft Foundation Classes, or whatever. With that... Please convey my best regards to all your loved ones ever and you all take care too. Guest guest
Dearest Narasimha Indeed this point by Ron is the only reason I have not committed to purchase the software so far.I wish there could be a better way for both parties to be satisfied. I'm no expert in software protection tactics. So I'll wait till i get a PC that I am sure I will be keeping for a long time. Guest guest
Dear Ron and Group, With respect to your very legitimate concerns below, different reputable software vendors have now finally come up with a few new working solutions to these problems. So I just assumed that Narasimha and JHora are also going to implement something similar…(Hope I’m not wrong! mso-ascii-font-family:Arial;mso-hansi-font-family:Arial;mso-char-type:symbol; mso-symbol-font-family:Wingdings"> Wingdings">L font-family:Arial">) For example - Shri Jyoti Star now has a Members Sign In and Password Verification (on Andrew’s website) to quickly receive your new ID, Goravani Jyotish has a Code Letter in a specific area that can be accessed to quickly receive a new activation, Parashara’s Light gives your first ID code (based on you machine code) immediately online (for the newly released PL6), and a phone number that can be accessed 5 or 6 days a week and is answered immediately to receive a new code or a code for your second machine (or you may email them and they are usually very quick to respond), MagiSoft requires you to call with your Member Number and Identification to activate a code for your new machine, while Solar Fire 5 has full trust and no piracy concerns mso-ascii-font-family:Arial;mso-hansi-font-family:Arial;mso-char-type:symbol; mso-symbol-font-family:Wingdings"> Wingdings">J font-family:Arial"> and ships (with your order) your italic">User Name, Serial Code, and Password that works on new computers also. 10.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Arial;color:navy;mso-color-alt: windowtext"> 10.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Arial;color:navy;mso-color-alt: windowtext"> So none of the reputable vendors (above) requires you to purchase a new program each time you change machines…hopefully JHora will be the same, as I already ordered mine without any concerns given to what you have mentioned – figuring there will be a reasonable way to resolve these issues in JHora also…Hopefully I’m right… 12.0pt;font-family:Wingdings;mso-ascii-font-family:Arial;mso-hansi-font-family: Arial;mso-char-type:symbol;mso-symbol-font-family:Wingdings">J 10.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Arial"> 12.0pt;font-family:Arial'> AUTOTEXTLIST \s "E-mail Signature" yes"> ~Namaste~ yes"> Sandy Crowther http://www.jupitersweb.com/ 12.0pt;font-family:Arial'> 10.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Arial"> -----Original Message----- Ron Bach [humbleshishya (AT) netscape (DOT) net] Tuesday, May 13, 2003 9:55 AM Re: [sJC: Achyuta Gurukul] JH commercial version - Important Dear Narasimha Ji and list, While, other people's problem with the commercial version of JH may be the payment, I have a different concern, which is as follows: margin-left:1.0in;text-indent:-.25in;mso-list:l0 level1 lfo1;tab-stops:list 1.0in"> 12.0pt;font-family:Symbol;color:black;mso-color-alt:windowtext">· black">You have mentioned that the commercial version of JH uses Machine ID for verification of key or codes. margin-left:1.0in;text-indent:-.25in;mso-list:l0 level1 lfo1;tab-stops:list 1.0in"> 12.0pt;font-family:Symbol;color:black;mso-color-alt:windowtext">· black">This may be very ideal for your purpose of protecting the software so that it is not shared amongst friends, etc. margin-left:1.0in;text-indent:-.25in;mso-list:l0 level1 lfo1;tab-stops:list 1.0in"> 12.0pt;font-family:Symbol;color:black;mso-color-alt:windowtext">· black">However, some of us [i mean people like me who are in IT industry and also many I know who are just home users] upgrade our personal computers almost every 3 months. mso-color-alt:windowtext"> margin-left:1.0in;text-indent:-.25in;mso-list:l0 level1 lfo1;tab-stops:list 1.0in"> 12.0pt;font-family:Symbol;color:black;mso-color-alt:windowtext">· black">This means that if we register, say a particular machine ID with you today, three months down the road, the software would be useless for us as we would be going for even faster and better version of either Intel or Intel Celeron processors as well as different versions of Mother Board itself! margin-left:1.0in;text-indent:-.25in;mso-list:l0 level1 lfo1;tab-stops:list 1.0in"> 12.0pt;font-family:Symbol;color:black;mso-color-alt:windowtext">· black">The upgradation time may not necessarily be three months, but judging at my past upgrade schedule, I have changed the mother boards as well as the processors at least ONCE in 4 months. margin-left:1.0in;text-indent:-.25in;mso-list:l0 level1 lfo1;tab-stops:list 1.0in"> 12.0pt;font-family:Symbol;color:black;mso-color-alt:windowtext">· black">In this case, if I were forced to pay US$185 to you every three or four months, it would be very expensive for me to own the software, even though I think it is a masterpiece and a much needed tool for our learning with all the features and dasas. Guest guest
Dear Sandy and Group, I thank you for your detailed post with mention of all reasonable practices. I hope you are right. However, after reading your post, and then again re-reading the initial post about JH commercial software, I would like to quote the section "An important note:" from the post by Narasimha Ji, dated May 8, 2003, 11:08 PM as follows: Quote Begins: "An important note: This commercial version uses a license key mechanism to fight piracy. It will run on your computer only if the license key corresponding to your computer's unique machine ID is obtained from us and entered into the software. In order to install the software on multiple machines, you will need to get multiple license keys from us. So you cannot share this software with your friends." Quote Ends. Well, while sharing the software with any *friends* would be the last thing on my mind, my previous post [to which this is a thread and reply] already clarifies my worry [namely frequent machine upgrades]. Furthermore, the sentence "In order to install the software on multiple machines, you will need to get multiple license keys from us." already leaves me wondering whether in future [in case I purchase], what will it require from me to convince that I *upgraded* my machine and am not just getting another *key* for my friend? Of course, I do understand Narasimha Ji's concern and they are genuine. However, it seems we all need to find a feasible and reasonable solution around this problem. Similar to what you have outlined in your post, even I am aware that there are countless other solutions that do not have to fall back on Machine ID; while still securing from abuse of Piracy. However, I think at least I will wait for a reply from Narasimha Ji regarding this issue; prior to my order. With that... Please convey my best regards to all your loved ones ever and you all take care too.
