RE: [sJC: Varahamihira] To all members: Membership Fees/Jyotish

Digest

Dear Sarbani,

Please be assured that I only sent you ONE message, and certainly meant no

pressure on you. I know you must be very busy with your duties. But please

realize that I have no control over how various routers or ISP's handle the

outgoing or incoming mails.

My reason for asking you about membership transfers through Paypal is

strictly relative to security purposes when transferring funds

internationally. Writing a personal check to any bank or financial

institution, while simultaneously requesting (and trusting) that the money

be deposited into a specific account at that bank, is not a normal procedure

and is highly discouraged by administrative banking officials where I come

from, which is the USA. However, I will do just that as you requested, by

obtaining a Certified or Registered check for security reasons, and then

just hope for the best.

I hope this better explains my position and concerns, relative to the

cultural differences in banking practices. My thoughts and concerns are also

related to the fact that this type of suggested monetary transfer may result

in actually impeding international participation in financially supporting

SJC, if other members also have security concerns over the mode of suggested

transfer. But this is really none of my business, so I will leave it at

that. I am merely trying to initiate your supportive awareness due to

cultural differences in banking practices, and if I have initially hesitated

to date to do as you suggested because of concerns, I am sure I am not

alone. I hope you understand now that I merely want to support SJC, without

the risk of getting "ripped off" as we say in the USA. :) Thanks.

Dear Sandy,

I received 3 messages from you! Do allow for time gaps. No, we don't have

paypal arrangement for membership fees. You can deposit the check directly

into the account from wherever you are...OR post it to me.

Hope this helps,

Dear Sandy,

We cannot use Pay Pal as India does not yet 'recognise' it or provide

facilities by which its citizens can avail of the Pay Pal services...yet.

Hopefully our government will soon rectify the lacuna, so that it becomes

convenient for people across the globe to have smoother financial exchanges.

Anyway, since this is a governmental policy level matter, I can't help you

much about this.

Now there are two ways that you can send checks to SJC. The first is the

longer way; that is, you simply post a check to SJC by snail mail and we

deposit it to the account when it reaches us. The second, is quicker and

cheaper for you: this is a bank to bank transfer. Ask your Bank to transfer

the required amount directly to SJC's account that we posted on the list

earlier. And then there are more cumbersome and expensive methods like Money

Order/Telegraphic Transfer and Western Union Money Transfers. It does not

make any difference to us as to how you make the payment. The choice and

convenience is yours entirely. Till the government of India makes Pay Pal

accessible to Indians, there is nothing much that we can do to make it

easier for you. If you have any other suggestions on the matter, please let

us know, so that we can adopt the easiest process available for the

convenience of all.

Best regards,

Sarbani Sarkar

Dear Sarbani,

Thanks for both your email and time...I appreciate it. I understand that SJC

does not have an account set up for SJC membership payment transfers, which

is fine, and I will do as you suggested for transferring funds. However, let

me just address something (with respect to the Indian government) for the

benefit of the members who do have Paypal accounts...

Your statement (below) remains quite confusing to me because PayPal does

list India amongst the following accepted International accounts:

http://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=p/gen/approved_countries-outside

(Please see countries listed below).

You said:

"We cannot use Pay Pal as India does not yet 'recognise' it or provide

facilities by which its citizens can avail of the Pay Pal services...yet.

Hopefully our government will soon rectify the lacuna, so that it becomes

convenient for people across the globe to have smoother financial exchanges.

Anyway, since this is a governmental policy level matter, I can't help you

much about this."

Then you say: "Till the government of India makes Pay Pal

accessible to Indians, there is nothing much that we can do to make it

easier for you. If you have any other suggestions on the matter, please let

us know, so that we can adopt the easiest process available for the

convenience of all."

Based on your statements (above), what causes me confusion is the fact that

Sanjay offers many services on his website http://www.srath.com/services.htm

through Paypal, which I believe must be payable to an account in New Delhi,

India. Would international transfers for his services, payable in foreign

currencies, not be honored? Or in other words, are you saying that if

someone from outside India ordered one of the services that Sanjay provides,

the currency would not be accepted, or transferred into Indian rupees? (Have

I got that right? :)) I ask this because I have received many International

payments through Paypal for chart services rendered over the past few years,

and I am now wondering if this has worked so well for me because it is based

on the fact that my government has full acceptance of converting foreign

currency into US dollars, whereas India's policies differ?)

Thanks for your time and any additional clarification. Please email me

privately if you feel that this matter is of no interest to the groups at

large (when you have the time...no rush :)) Thanks.

Anyway, below is from Sanjay's website, followed by International Account

information from PayPal's website...

Payment (from Sanjay's site)

Sanjay writes: ( http://www.srath.com/services.htm )

"Payments by credit cards are accepted through Paypal for reasons of

security. Alternatively, you can choose one of the following methods for

sending in your payment..."
