I am a relative beginner and have attempted to explain your niece's situation.

Learned members can please point out any errors/mistakes.

Although Sun is favorably placed in the 9H Leo in Rashi chart it is afflicted in

the D12 (Dwadashamsa-shows everything related to parents) chart. 9H, 9L and Sun

could represent father in the D12.

Lagna Vimshottary dasa (Lagna stronger than Moon) running at the time of birth was Sun-Rahu-Jupiter.

Looking at D12 Moon the 9L is placed in 8-8-6 position from Sun-Rahu-Jupiter.

In D12 Sun the Naisargika Karaka for Father is placed in the 6th position from

9L Moon and Pitraarudha (A9) in the 12H.

Moon is Badhak lord for lagna (Scorpio) in D12 and is placed with A9 with rashi

aspect of Mars (Bhinna Ashtakavarga -BAV - 3), Venus (BAV - 2) and Jupiter (BAV

- 2). Lower than 4 BAV score generally indicates malefic influence.

The 9H (Cancer) in D12 is afflicted by 3L Saturn and has the lowest Samudaaya

Ashtakavarga (SAV) of 18. See below.
