Minutes of the 2nd SJC East Coast (USA) Study Group Meeting, 11/02/02

Report prepared by Sriram N Kizhakkemadam and Sanjay Prabhakaran in consultation

with other attendees

The 2nd meeting of the SJC East Coast study group was attended by Shri Sanjay

Prabhakaran who led the discussion, Shri Ashwin Kansgara who hosted the

session, Shri Sureshbabu Chandra, Shri Lakshman Brahma, Shri ShivKulhari,

Shrimati Karen Skoler and Sriram Kizhakkemadam . Later Shri Deepak Phatak and

his wife Shrimati Swapna Phatak joined the meeting.

As per Gurudev Pt.Sanjay Rath’s instructions, we concentrated on the basics and

did not delve on Vipareetam Ketoh principles or any higher issues. We discussed

the Pancha Siddhanta from Satya Jatakam of Satyacharya ( English translation by

Prof.P.S.Sastri). The Pancha Siddhanta refers to

Grihasheela (Nature of each planet)

Karakatwa (Significations of planet)

Naskshatra (The Asterisms, its 3 fold divisions, their categories, Janma, sampat etc, Arkshas etc)

Swavarga (Own Divisions of a planet in D9, D-3 etc)

Adhipatya Siddhanta (Dispositor or ownership).

In particular, we discussed Grihasheela of all the 9 planets during the meeting.

The notes given below hints at some of the points learned by the members which

they were not aware of. Reporting of all of the planetary characteristics In

order to avoid repeating all the material given in Satya jataka, only some of

the salient characteristics have been enumerated below. Questions have been

raised in red at places where our understanding could not fathom the

characteristics ascribed to the planets by sage Satyacharya ( or by his

translator).

Sun

Square body, short stature, little hair, strong bones(Sun forms the basis for

creation. The skeletal system is therefore represented by Sun), pride (King has

pride), dark red, 8 yojanas in length, resolute (King is resolute), wrathful,

bilious temperament, Sattwic, Eagle bird, 30 years old, intelligence( the

shining rays of the sun dispel ignorance and give intelligence), gold, copper,

jewels on ear, nose, chest, fruit bearing trees(fruits contain the seeds which

contain the atma. Sun is naisargika atma karaka), thatched houses, wheat, girls

aged 8 years old, short trees, brinjal(eggplant), beans, pungent, coarse thick

clothes, red kidney beans, 5 rays.

Some general points

As sun represents intelligence, Sun in 5th from Karakamsha will give knowledge

of the atma and paramatma as enunciated in the Bhagavad Gita (Jaimini Sutra)

Karna, the son of the Sun god was blessed with jewels on chest. His vanquish was

possible only after his chest jewels were taken by Indra posing as a Brahmana.

Coarse thick clothes are used by people who have to weather the roughness of the

surroundings while working during the day

The grass grows under the sun. Hence the animals which subsist on grass as well

as thatched houses are ruled by Sun.

Sun in the 10th house (zenith, north) of any muhurtha horoscope will take away

the malefiscence of the muhurtha because the Sun is strong during forenoon and

noon is represented by 10th house.

Sun is a loner as the King does not mingle much with others.

Strong sun influencing ascendant (rasi/navamsa) will also give a charitable

disposition (the King is magnanimous) and entrepreneurship.

Q1: How are different planets allotted different yojanas. What is their

application (In prashna for distance calculations?)

Q2: The age for planets given in Satya Jataka is different from the maturity age

given in COVA. Can the gurus please guide us about the meaning of the age for

different planets mentioned in Satya jataka?

Q3: Why is brinjal, beans allotted to Sun?

Q4: What is the concept of the rays as used by Satyacharya? The allotment of

rays is different from that of other books which use the rays of the planet to

determine the strength of the planet

Moon

Round, white, 1 yojana, beautiful eyes(Moon gets exalted in the second house of

the zodiac, travel(moon rules over waters which indicates travel by

sea/oceans), cold/soothing (the cool rays of the Moon), mild, meek, soft in

speech, 70 years, 21 rays, calmness, poet( moon is manah karaka- mind

significator and like the flowing waves of the ocean ruled by the moon, the

flow of the mind yields poetry), strong houses, womanliness(moon is the queen –

the apotheosis of womanhood in an ideal state), sappy plants (sap is white –

color of Moon), cloth, lily(usually a white flower), cucumber( inside is

white), bronze, brass, ornaments on head(Shiva has the Moon on his head), rice

(white grain), homely or cozy or comfortable house(the 4th house of the natural

zodiac is ruled by Moon), fat (it is the cause for the exaltation of expansive

Jupiter), pearl(white jewel found in ocean), strong during night(Moon rises at

night).

General comments:

As the Moon is strong at night, the mother goddess( the female principle) is

usually worshipped at night

 

Q4: The Purusha Sukta states that Chakshos suryoh ajayata (Sun was born from His

eyes). So is the sun the indicator of sight and moon that for the physical

beauty of the eyes?

Q5: Bronze and brass have been allocated for Sun and Moon. Can the gurus shed more light on this?

 

 

Mars

Reddish, youthful(the warrior is youthful), 7 yojanas, cruel(warrior is cruel),

fickle-minded(w.r.t power – Generals cause coup d’ etat), rash, generous,

tamasic, Dal, red grains, pulses, thorny trees(because it pokes), sheep,

bones(marrow), thieves (soldiers can logically think, climb the fort and

sneak), sin, wounds, pomp and show, waist string, strong during night and

Krishna paksha.

General comments

The aphorism "Kujavad Kethu" implies that kethu is the Sookshma or subtle

feature of Kuja who is more Sthoola or gross.

The application of the above idea can be understood by knowing that while Kuja

rules over spears, Kethu rules over surgical instruments

Mars incluencing 10th house can indicate technocrats while Kuja + Sukra

influencing 10th can indicate people who write Graphical User Interfaces (GUI).

If Kuja influences 4th house, there will be a fireplace at home.

As Kuja represents uncontrolled anger, exalted Kuja represents controlled

anger.If Kuja gets neechbhanga by Jupiter or Moon or Saturn, the anger will be

controlled by wisdom, and restrictions (jail) respectively.

As fire is represented by Mars, firefighters are represented by Venus as Venus

extinguishes the flames of mars

As Kuja is signifactor for land, land should be bought in Krishna paksha and the

contract can be signed during night of Krishna Paksha (Gurus are requested to

kindly confirm this)

Mars when influenced by the Sun will make the native fight for a good cause

while he becomes bad when influenced by Saturn. When associated with Rahu, it

gives rise to Vijaya Yoga yielding success in battles by hook or crook.

Q: Is Kuja rajasic or tamasic(as satyacharya has given) ?

Mercury

Green, rajasic, lean, talkative, long reddish eyes, pot bely 8 yojanas,

mathematics, languages, highly intelligent (as he can understand other person),

learned, mixture, 6 rays, green grams, blue stones, blue lotus, glass bangles,

beetle leaves, centipedes, uncle, mathematics, wit and humor, village

administration (Budha is prince – dominion over a lesser area), birds( Sanjay

commented that walking birds are ruled by Budha while flying birds are ruled by

Ravi), blak paddy, pupils.

General comments

Budha + kethu combination related to 10th house or D-10 can give knowledge of

computers or software

Islamic countries have green as their favorite color as Prophet Muhammad had his

Atmakaraka in a mercurial sign

Jupiter

Big body, yellow, big belly, brown-honey colored, 30 years of age, Hemanta

season, exceedingly intelligent, clear, pure speech, 7 rays, Bengal gram(it is

yellow colored), Vedas, devotion, elliptical shape, bankers, charity, 5

flowers, sugarcane, beetlenut, woodwork houses.

Venus

Beautiful form, proportionate limbs, dark eyes, soft pleasing speech, 16 years,

watery, wind + phlegm, multicoloured(spring – many colours), blossoming of

adulthood, 8 rays, white colour, vitality, jasmine, artistic hourses, trees in

watery places, cow gram, strong at night and bright fortnight

Saturn

Deep, sunk eyes, lean tall body, dull and large nails, large teeth, downward,

cruel and pitiless, 8 yojanas, 5 rays, cunningness, old houses, bitter fruits,

forest fruits with thick skin, bamboo

Rahu

Tall, black, heretic, paternal grandfather, deceit, research oriented, lesser

confidence, serpents, cars, skin diseases, Durga, fever, jugglery, hands, 20

yojanas, hysteria, foreign languages, occupations considered low, Gomedha

jewel, Black gram

Kethu

Venomous speech, smoke, limbs covered with wounds, knowledge which gives

salvation, sinful habits, poison in tail, back-biting, proficient in foreign

language, low and mean acts, accidents by fire,

haughtiness,Vaidurya(turquoise).

General comments

Planetary relationships are not absolute. Although Mercury is inimical to

Jupiter, he is not inimical to Jupiter as a student.

Similarly, Saturn has a two fold relationship with Sun, one as Mahakal wherein

he does not obey Sun and the other as yamaraja wherein he obeys Sun. Thus, Sani

+ sun combination can make the person do menial service to his father or sani in

9th can make him irreligious(unless he gets exalted or association with lagna

lord)

Rahu is inimical to Karakas for the first house as Sun is the indicator for the

first house and Rahu is inimical to Sun.

Rahu(diabolical scheming) can be defeated by Sun(government) and Jupiter(bank).

Any planets in quadrants enhance the house they own.

Navamsa gives support to Rasi

While Moon signifies rains, venus signifies dew.

To judge planetary strength, we have to investigate the strengths of

pakesha(lord of the sign occupied by the planet), the lord of the navamsa

occupied by the planet, lord of the sign occupied by the pakesha in Rasi chart,

pakesha’s dispositor in navamsa and nakshatra dispositor.

If there are no planets in quadrants or trines, the life will generally be tough.

The 7 planets can be mapped to the 7 lokas (Bhu, Bhuvah, Suvah, Maha ,Jana,

Tapa, Satya). This includes the Earth- Bhu loka.

Jupiter and Kethu combination makes a person a good astrologer

The meeting ended at 5:00p.m. We broadly decided to continue with Pancha

Siddhanta in the next meeting. The details and location will be emailed by Shri

Sanjay Prabhakaran/ Shri Sureshbabu Chandra. We would like to thank Shri Ashwin

Kansagra and his wife for hosting the event and providing a superbly delicious

lunch. Some of us (especially Sriram) packed some for home.

We request the Gurus to kindly to point out mistakes in our understanding,

answer our queries and enlighten us.
