Guest guest
Dear Karu, Shrabani has nicely replied. I want to add a few lines ... 1.The Durga Saptasati is Pauranic( also called Chandi Path), comprising 13 chapters of Markandeya Purana from numbers 81 to 93. Hence it dates between 900 to 500 B.C .However as the first writing in India was not widely used until 3rd century BC ,it is precarious to proclaim any accuracy. It most probably assumed its present form under the patronage of Gupta kings, when scholars collected ,edited, and recorded the oral traditions of prose and poetry prevalent among the many people of the empire. Certainly, its root is "vedic ."The entire CHANDI PATH purports to be a commentary on the 2 rigvedic hymns included at its begining and end. "THe Ratri Sukta,Praise of the Night of duality", and the Devi Sukta "Praise of the goddess who is UNITY" We must dispel the darkness of egotism in order to realise that"I" am a divine being of infinite perception. Again its a basic authority of the tantras. It gives definition to method and practice of the oral tradition which can only be learned from a qualified Guru. The Durga Saptasati (or Devi Mahatmyam -the glory of the goddess can be seen as an intellectual interpretation of the CHANDI.But to realize the real Chandi, one must strive to make the goddess the sum and substance of his entire life. The one who understands it completely is Shiva and to the extent we are capable,we become HIM. On every level of the scripture is a commentary on the evolution of consciousness. Some good translations can be had from 1.Chandi Path by Swami Satyanand Saraswati from Devi Mandir Publications USA or Moti Lal Banarasidas Publishers in ,Naraina N.delhi. 2.Gitapress,Gorakhpur (www.gitapress.org) or Vedavani Prakashan,in Maharashtra. Also if you visit Sanskrit.gde.to you will find all 700 verses translated there. But only a GURU can help understanding he hidden meanings..... By Uccharan I meant pronounciation, and that we had been asked to read it 40 times before coming for the first formal lesson in a formal "shivir"(camp)
Guest guest
Arun, my name is not Shrabani but Sarbani or Sarvani. Shrabani comes from the month of Shravan and Sarbani is one of the 108 names of Durga. (streelinga of Sarva, that is Shiv). Sorry, for this off-topic intervention!
