Guest guest
OHM SHRI RAGAVENDRAYA NAMAH JAYA JAGANNATHA Namaste Sarbani, I am sorry for this belated response. Your queries are answered below. Thanks Solai Kannan Sarbani Sarkar [sarbani (AT) vsnl (DOT) com]21 March 2002 10:01 AMsjvcSubject: [sjvc] New member-guidance required on how to proceed Dear teachers at SJVC,Thank you for accepting me as a student of SJVC. I would be happy to ifanyone could guide me as to the correct procedure of doing this 'course'and what is required from me to learn/understand jyotish, at least alittle bit.1. Am I supposed to study the lessons one by one and post theassignments to the list?[solai] Yes. 2. Is there any time frame for it? For I would have to balance itwith my other work commitments.[solai] For the past lessons, there is no time frame. But, for the future lessons, please try to finish within a week or two. 3. A list of books was forwarded when I joined the list. I cannotpurchase them all at once, but will do so gradually. Which are the booksI should purchase immediately? I live in Delhi, so I suppose I couldget them from Sagar.[solai] What we have given is the minimum. However, if you need an order start as BPHS, Vedic Astrology - an integrated approach, COVA. Further answer is continued along with answer for 4th question.4. I already have the following: a) An online version of BPHS b) An online version of Gargacarya's Garga Hora c) An online version of Prithuyasas's Hora Sara d) An online version of Kalyan Verma's Saravalli e) Sarvartha Chintamani f) Bhavartha Ratnakara g) A few books by B. V. Raman h) Predictive Astrology by L. C. SharmaCan I use the online version of the BPHS? Should I use any of the otherclassics? Or is it advisable that I use them at a later stage, when Ihave become a little bit more familiar with jyotish?[solai] The primary book is BPHS. You have to read sloka by sloka and absorb the meanings thoroughly. You should not hurry up in completing BPHS. Online versions are not complete, there are many slokas and chapters are missing. Secondly, at some places you need explanations, though the explanations given in any translation are not satisfactory, it will help when you do not understand a sloka. Thirdly, some of the translations or interpretation given for a sloka are not correct. But, if you can read Sanskrit words, you will get better understanding of the words given than actually translated, like 'dharma' is not correctly translated by many. Leave the other books for the time being and get a hard copy of BPHS and start reading, if you get two different translations, at least you may have a balance in understanding. When you cannot understand some terminologies, you can refer other books for meaning and calculations. Otherwise, BPHS is sufficient. 5) Are there any particular exercises I should do?[solai] Reading BPHS and SJVC lessons and answering those lessons are sufficient for the time being. My apologies for taking your time over these trivialites,[solai] There is no need to apologize. At least I am happy that you come forward and asking these questions. Thanking you in advance,Sarbani Terms of Service.
