Jai Jai Shri Jagannath!

Om Guruve Namah!

Dear Gurudeva,

I would like to first thank SJVC and Guruji Solai for accepting me

as a student in this classroom. God bless us all.

I am providing answers for Lesson 1. Please correct me where I am

wrong.

Pranaam,

-Suresh

1. Explain the changing of the seasons and its connection with

the above mentioned astronomical factors.

Ans: As the orbit of Earth around sun is Elliptical, Earth is

closer to Sun sometimes and farther away at other times during the

year. And Earth's axis of rotation is inclined at 23.5 degrees, and

the orbital plane is inclined as well (I am not sure of degrees of

inclination). When Earth moves from one solstice to other(Maxima

points of Elliptical orbit) Sun appears to move from South to the

North( Uttaraayanaa) for six months and North to the South

(Dhakshinaayana) for the rest of the year. Northward journey of Sun

results in Spring and Summer for norther hemisphere (Lattitudes noth

of equator), and the Southward journey results in Autumn and Winter

for northern Hemisphere (Opposites for the southern Hemisphere).

Even though distance to a two opposite points on the

elliptical orbit from the center (Sun) is the some distance to a

point on the surface of Earth (Lattitute) will not be the same due to

the inclination of earth's axis of rotation, resulting in oppsite

seasons.

2. There are some days of the year when the Sun either doesn't

rise or set above certain parts of the globe. Please explain this

phenomenon.

Ans: When Earth is closer to Winter/Summer solstice (Maxima

points on the elliptical orbit of earth around the sun), Poles are

either below the ecliptic or above the ecliptic by more than 18

angular degrees, resulting in no sun rise or sunset.

3. Parasara mentions two classes of heavenly bodies: the moving

and non-moving ones. Please explain, what will be the difference

between their roles in the astrological interpretation.

Ans: Moving objects are said to be Grahas (planets) and Non-

moving ones are Nakshatras (constellations). Non moving objects in

astrology may be considered as permanent influences or soul's

desires. And Moving objects may be maybe considered as the

influences/desires on/of the body and mind. Planets and Planetary

influences may be assumed to be filtered by or Non-moving object's

indications – Soul's Journey.

4. If you are able to construct your own chart, please

do it and explain as many astronomical principles from it as you can

(terrestrial latitude/longitude, season, Sun's cycle, Sunrise/Sunset

etc.). Also try to determine which planets are above and under the

horizon in your chart. In which Ayana the Sun is?

Ans:

- Born on the Morning of November 23rd, before Sun

rise, So for astrological calculation the Date of birth needs to be

considered as Nov 22nd – as the day in astrology is considered from

Sunrise to Sunrise.

- Sun is in Scorpio, and so is in Dhakshinaayana (Sun moving from

Leo to Capricorn – Dhakshinaayana, From Aquarious to Cancer is

Uttaraayana)

- Planets between first house and sevent house are below the

horizon, and the rest are above the horizon. So in this chart, Venus,

Sun, Saturn, Moon are all below the horizon and Jupiter, Mars are

above the horizon. As far as planets in 1st and 7th, if the longitude

of planets in 1st house is greater than that of the Ascendant, then

they are below the horizon and vice versa – So Mercury (25 deg 04min)

is below the horizon, and Ketu (21 deg 59min) is above the horizon

(for ketu' longitude is reckoned from the end of the sign), Rahu (21

deg 59 min) is below the horizon.
