I am disappointed that many of us are silent. These lessons are simple and easy to understand. If you find difficult in understanding please send us your queries, instead of being silent. Two more additional supplementary lessons on astronomy are forthcoming. Meanwhile, herewith attached is the CREATION lesson, which was presented in Varahamihira list. As per Gurudeva Pt.Sanjay Rath's advise, we are sending this lesson to SJVC. Those who have already attempted the lesson in Varahamihira can attempt again or can leave it. But, these questions can be answered at any time. In fact these questions are meant to review our spiritual advancement. I think every year we have to answer for these questions and see the improvement in our answers. This is a very very simple and basic lesson, I want all of the quite members to respond to this lesson. Guest guest
Questions: 1. Lord Narayana in my life: I will let this remain personal. 2. Closer to HIM- daily practice within and without. " withdraw, then withdraw from the withdrawal" 3. What is more relevant ? "God is" 4. Jyotish different from a priest? if we are of the thought that the Jyotish is to assist one on the path of Dharma and to help an individual develop , then there is very little difference other than residence and clothing being worn. Yet the Sasthrigal that performs yajna and puja is blessed to assist the native to move closer to Him. One established in Bhakti-rupapanna-jnana performing yajna for the good of the individual and the family of man brings great benefits. Would it not be most satvic to be both the Jyotisha and the Sasthrigal ? Is it not the goal of the Jyotish and the priest to eliminate Avidya-dosa and to bring Atmanubhava? 5. Done. Guest guest
Dear Solai ji, Namaste, I had recently submitted my response to Lesson 1 (of V-Mihira list) assignment - same as this Lesson 2 of SJVC. I repeat the same - with some minor improvements (I hope) With best regards.Shailesh Question. Try to define the role of God in your life ?Answer: To me, God is the source, the cause and the goal of life. I sincerely believe the lessons tought to me as a child brought-up a 'practicing' Arya Samaji family that the God is Sat-Chita-Anand-swaroop, all powerful and all-pervasive, just and pure. In my belief, God is 'facilitator' - he has given me an opportunity to do good by giving me this body, gave me birth in an enlightened family, benevolent parents, great education and career, a loving and supportive wife and children to be proud of. God provided me with support and resources whenever and whatever I needed - maybe after some suffering, some struggle, some frustration - but whatever I needed always came through in one form or the other. And when I became interested in acquiring deeper knowledge of Jyotish, I got admitted to this list. To that God, I owe everything and my goal of the life is to get closer to him to attain the ulimate 'VILAY' in to Him. Question: What have you done in the past year to come closer to God ?Answer: I am trying to become a better person - as a human being I have my failings and shortcomongs. I am trying to identify them and overcome them. In order to do that, I have to 'know' myself - Jyotish knowledge will give me that insight. I am trying to live-up to these words of Yajurveda ( Sanajy ji corrected me and pointed out that originally this is a richa from Rig Veda)- 'Om vishvaani deva, savitur-duritaani paraasuva yata bhadram tanna aa suva' and 'Agne naya supathaa raaye asmaana.....' Question: Which is more relevant a) God is All or b) All is God ? Answer: To me, there is no difference in the two statements - all beings are 'Atma' and God is 'Paramaatma'. There is a part of the God in All, therefore All is God. Quesiton: How is jyotish different from a priest ? Answer: If I may put it crudely, a jyotish would be a doctor (at a spiritual level) whereas a priest would be a chemist, and also a teacher. When a native goes to jyotish, he expects jyotish has to diagnose and identify the problem and suggest appropriate remedies/ solution to him. On the other hand, the priest would help the subject to perform the specific remedial pujas/ rituals prescribed by the jyotish. The priest would also help in performing puja, rituals etc., and also to provides general guidance connected with other occassions/ ceremonies etc. in the normal course of day-to-day life. - Solai Kannan sjvc Saturday, November 17, 2001 5:47 PM [sjvc] Lesson 2 - Creation OHM SHRI RAGAVENDRAYA NAMAH JAYA JAGANNATHA Namaste Jyotisha, I thank and appreciate who are all responded for lesson 1. Guest guest
OM SRI GURAVE NAMAH Dear Frank, You cannot play God, although we all would like to do so. The best of Jyotisha cannot be the best Purohita because when a Purohita/ preist makes a Samkalpa for the pooja for someone else, he has to put his heart and soul into the Karma Kanda and for this, the awareness of the strength of the problem is a deterrant. This is a real life situation. The purohita should have the basic rudimentary knowledge of Jyotisha but cannot dedicate himself to the ocean of this knowledge as then his spiritual and daily pooja will suffer. God alone can do the varied Karma perfectly. This is true as society evolves that the differentiation of work leads to better perfection. Of course it would be beneficial to be the Jyotish, and the Poojari as well as the Ayurvedic doctor as well as the Diksha Guru as well as the Yantra sadhaka as well as so many other things. This cannot be denied, but the level of expertise will dwindle with the varying focus. Answer to 3 - Thats an escapist answer. I had expected a detailed analysis on this from you given your high level of knowledge. Guest guest
Namaste, Here is my attempt to answer lesson 2. >> 1. Try to define the role of God in your life. Ans.1. No one will have the words to explain the role of the soul to whom he love most. It is only he, himself, who can understand it. For me, He is everything for me. When I was in need of a guru, I requested him, and He gave me knowledge from Shri Bhagvad Gita in the form Shri Krishna. When I was in need of Bhakti and wanted to get rid of lust and passion, he gave me His protection and shield against maya from Shri Ram Charit Manas in the form of Shri Ram. When I was in need of a friend, He gave me guidance by coming in my dreams and giving me hints in his own way. Now, how can I share my inner heart feelings for Him in the form of few words? I can only say He is everything for me. >>2 . What have you done in the past one year to come closer to God? Ans. Firstly, I tried to gather more and more knowledge about Him. Shri Bhagwat Gita and Shri Ram Charit Manas is the ocean of knowledge. Every new page gave me more love for Him. While reading them, I tried my best to follow them also in my life. a) All this gave me power to be always truthful. Now, when I've started reading Shri Bhagwat Gita for the second time, it is giving me totally different experiences. After reading it for 25-30 minutes, I feel a state of somekind of attraction for b) meditation...; a state where mind attains peace and no idea comes in mind. A pleasant smile comes to my face as I feel I'm in right path. I, myself, is not doing anything to come closer to him. He, himself, is showing me right path to help me to reach him. >> 3. Which statement is more relevant: (a) God is all, or(b) All is God Ans. Both the statements carries equal weightage. God is all - God is present everywhere. Infact, He has explained this in His Universal form, where past, present, future, all yugas, every soul, every world is within His body. Yet he is still present in every soul, in every particle, even the smallest particle of this universe as all is God. >> 4. How is the role of a Jyotish different from a priest? There are various path that leads to supreme Godhead. Karma, Knowledge, Bhakti, Yajna, Charity, serving mankind without expecting any results, etc. Any one of these paths, in its complete form, has the potential to give salvation or final emancipation. A priest will show the native the path of bhakti (pure devotion to God) as the guiding principle to get rid of the sins which he has already committed. But the task of astrologer is different from it. His duty is to guide the native in such a way as to give him the knowledge about his past sins and to show him the right path least those seeds become fruits. He should try to guide him to get rid of illusion (maya) affecting his mind, to show him the path of pure Karma, help him to attain more of saatwik guna and to supress raajsik and tamsik gunas. Ofcourse, all this is possible only when the astrologer, himself, is pure human being and understands whatever he is suggesting to the native. I've just tried to explain my few ideas here. Please correct me wherever I'm wrong. Guest guest
Om Jai Rama Jai Jai Rama Dear Sanjay - thank you for your feedback and let me reply in two areas: ( I leave my ego at the door for both) Regarding Jyotish and Priest I think you make some good points, that it is difficult a best to be both Jyotish and every thing else which dilutes the focus, yet I was hoping to answer the question honestly and with some insight. What of the JivanMukta when all the doors of perception are open and perfect discrimination is at hand? The Enlightened Brahmin who has done thorough study of Karma Kanda, Upasana Kanda and Gyana Kanda? Intuition is at its peak and his/her abilities to help a person from Jyotish to Ayurvedic knowledge is owned by him? This I think is the goal. I have seen this first hand with Maharishi Meshesh Yogi...because he operates from Unity, all knowledge is available to him. Regarding Question 3: Which statement is more relevant: (a) God is all, or (b) All is God No I did not choose an "escapist answer" that was not my intent and I am sorry you saw it that way. I find the question beyond Nyaya. I found the comparison ( upamana) more of a riddle then a question to ponder. I think if I posed a question of this nature to stimulate thought I would have submitted the following: When Sri Keshava discusses his personality ( Chapt 9.4) with Arjuna Govinda says " maya tatam idam sarvam jagad avyaktamurtina matsthani sarvabhutani na ca ham tesv avasthiytah" He tells Arjuna of yogam aisvaram - or the divine mystery...that is " I am in you , but you are not in me" Now this gets to the question, " God is all, or all is God" - If all is GOD or if GOD Is all , then yes, so am I ...yet Sri Krsna says otherwise…. "na ca matsthani bhutani pasya me yogam aisvaram bhutabhrn na ca bhutas ho mama tma bhutabhavanah" …and yet beings do not dwell in me; behold My divine mystery. My spirit is the source of all beings sustains the beings but does not abide in them. This, I believe is the question to ponder as a sisya or Guru Your sisya, Shanti, Shanti Shanti Frank in Austin , Fschmidt (AT) Austin (DOT) rr.com Sanjay Rath [srath (AT) vsnl (DOT) com] Saturday, November 17, 2001 8:39 PM sjvc Re: [sjvc] Lesson 2 - Creation OM SRI GURAVE NAMAH Dear Frank, You cannot play God, although we all would like to do so. Guest guest
Om Gurave Namah --------------- Shri Sanjay and Solai, Namaste. I already submitted the replies in Varahamihira once. I repeat the same, save for a minor "add-on" explanation. Q1. Try to define the role of God in your life. A1): God to me is… The Truth The Light The Unsullied Silence The Gentle Presence The Caring Look The Strong Hand The Unseen Hug The Warm Smile The Deep Love The Rest. Q2. What have you done in the past one year to come closer to God? Answer: Whenever I made someone happy, someone smile, someone less afraid, someone stronger, someone less lonely and someone cared for, I felt closer to God. Q3. Which statement is more relevant? a. God is all, or b. All is God. A3): From my point of view,“All is God” is more relevant. I think that there is a subtle difference in emphasis between the two statements. While the first statement could possibly make one turn his/her back on society and all the associated karma by saying that “God is all”, the second statement makes one seek society and actively serve the "Narayana" in "Nara". I personally prefer the credo “All is God”, because it enables me to interact more meaningfully with my environment… with humility, respect and faith. Q4. How is the role of a Jyotisha different from a priest. A4): Both are basically spiritual counselors, only the paths differ. A priest makes the individual go “outwards” in search of God, through Bhakti. A Jyotisha helps an individual turn “inwards” to know his true self, and realize God through self, through karma+gyana. Through both methods, over a period of “saadhana” the relationship between the Atma and Paramatma matures and becomes more intimate, until “dwaita” disappears and both become One. Guest guest
Dear Solai, Here are my answers to the questions of lesson 2: For me God is life and life is God. Everything is God and God is everything. In plain text - God is unconditionally integrated in my entity: wherever I am and with whatever I do regardless of physical or mental state.God is my source of strength in every single part and action in my life. My capabilities to learn and understand human psychological nature, incorporated with my extensive opportunity to use astrology as a tool for free support to people in need of help have definitely brought me closer to God during the last year. The two statements can not be separated in my opinion as ‘God is all’ and ‘all is God’. There can’t be anything in between. The social roll of a priest and Jotisha are similar in general but much different in some ways, depending on the type of society and culture they lives in. However, Both fill a very important SUPPORTIVE function with a common denominator – The usage of the term ‘soul’ and the belief in the supreme status of God as it’s ‘owner’, our creator and been the ‘Master’ of all. Despite of using different methods, both are functioning as counselors to other humans who rely on their position/status in society as ‘holy people’ who possess special gifts of knowledge and spirituality which exceed those possessed by the average individual. Guest guest
Hare Krishna! Pranamas to all! Here are my answers to SJVC Lesson 2: > 1. Try to define the role of God in your life. God is the Supreme Being, Supreme owner of everything, cause of all causes. I'm the infinitesimal part of Him. My eternal duty is to render devotional service to Him. Looking for answers on these three questions (who am I, who is God, and what are relationships between us) should become ultimate business of every one life. > 2. What have you done in the past one year to come closer to God? The best way to become closer to God is to associate with His bhaktas, serve them and inquire sincerely from them about the Absolute Truth. > 3. Which statement is more relevant:(a) God is all, or (b) All is God Logically these two statements are equal. That is, from the first statement second can be derived, and vice versa. And because God is all-pervading, both statements have common sense. > 4. How is the role of a Jyotish different from a priest? Priest is a performer of religious rites, which can give relief from reactions of past deads. But jyotisha is a brahmana who can explain the reasons of your present situation. > 5. Make a list of all Sakskrit terms in this Lesson under different starting letters and prepare your personal dictionary of Jyotish/Sanskrit terminology. Atma - soul Isha - God Jyoti - Light Jyotish - light of knowledge Jyotisha - vedic astrologer Rajas - mode of passion Satwa - mode of goodness Tamas - mode of ignorance Veda - knowledge Hare Krishna! Guest guest
Sri Gurubhyo Namah Hari Om Dear Guruji, Here are my attempts in answering questions associated with lesson #2. 1.Try to define God in your life. Everything to me is god. God is full of mercy, granting me what I seek, forgiving whatever sins i commit. God is full of love, nurturing / nurtured me and everyone around me thus far and I believe will nurture me and everything henceforth. If i think of god in terms of actions, all the good selfless deeds that i have been benefited from and have done. All the lessons that I /everyone learn from what I/ everyone perceive as unpleasant / pleasant. I am reminded of Arunagirinathar's thripugazh "Uruvai varuvai uladai iladai Maruvai malarai maniyai oliyai Karuvai Uyirai gathyai vithiyai Guruvai varuvai arulvai guhane" 2.What have you done in the past one year to come closer to God? Attempting to be good, trying not to hate any one, helping others, trying not expect anything in return for what i do. Loving everyone, trying to cut down my desire for want of things. All these have been trials and attempts only. I have not been very successful with them. 3.which is more relevant god is all or all is god. I think they both are relevant. Either ways I understand that god is everything, and there exists nothing that is not god. In Gita Lord Krishna [Translation by swami vivekananda] says "I am the intelligence of the intellects, the prowess of the powerful, but the three gunas satva rajas, and tamas are part of me, I am not in them but they abide in me" 4.how is the role of a jyotish different from a priest. A priest (in Hindu religion) seeks god's grace on behalf of some one else, by praising god. A jyotish looks into the person's birth-chart and tells the person, what all (s)he can do to realize god, get closer to god.
