Lesson 1

12.0pt">

Q 1.

12.0pt">

12.0pt">The earth spins round on its axis, which is tilted by 23deg 27min, at

an angle while going around the sun. Due to the inclination of the axis of the

earth, the ecliptic (sun’s annual path) is inclined by 23deg 27min to the

celestial equator (it is an extension of the earth’s equator in the sky).

12.0pt">

12.0pt">When the sun is in the north of the equator it is summer in the

northern hemisphere and winter in the southern hemisphere and vice versa when

the sun is south of the equator. The seasons change due to the movement of the

sun.

12.0pt">

Q 2.

12.0pt">

12.0pt">This phenomenon occurs in the areas near the poles, north and south.

These areas experience 6 months long days and nights.

12.0pt">

12.0pt">Only on and from the time the sun touches vernal equinox, those in the

north pole can have sun rising after continuous dark period of 6 months for

their continuous day of 6 months. If the autumnal equinox is taken then night

will set in and will run for 6 months for the people of north pole. While

people in the south pole will have

their day commencing from the time the sun passes autumnal equinox till it

reaches vernal equinox, which is 6 months for people in other latitudes.

12.0pt">

12.0pt">This phenomenon occurs when the sun reaches its greatest latitude of

23deg 27min and its maximum southern declination of 23deg 27min.

12.0pt">

Q 3.

12.0pt">

12.0pt">Out of the many luminous heavenly bodies that are seen in the sky some

are called stars (nakshatras) these are fixed in their places and they have no

movements. The other bodies are called planets (grahas) and these are moving

bodies.

12.0pt">

12.0pt">Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn along with Rahu and

Ketu (Chaaya grahas) plus 11 upagrahas are moving bodies.

12.0pt">

12.0pt">Rasis and Nakshatras are fixed bodies, which form the Zodiac. There are

12 Rasis and 27 Nakshatras.

12.0pt">

12.0pt">The position and movements of the planets in the Zodiac are measured

against the background of these fixed bodies.

12.0pt">

12.0pt">Q 4.

12.0pt">

12.0pt">In my chart:

12.0pt">

12.0pt">Ascendant (Lagna) is 25deg 39min 25sec Libra, this means Libra was

rising on the eastern horizon at the time of my birth.

12.0pt">From Libra (my ascendant) to Aries (my descendant) was below the

horizon and the planets, Jupiter, Venus, Rahu, Mercury, Sun, Mars and Saturn

were all below horizon. Sun being below horizon indicates that my birth was at

night.

12.0pt">

12.0pt">Moon and Ketu were above horizon.

12.0pt">

12.0pt">My longitude is 77E13 (east of Greenwich)

12.0pt">My latitude is 28N40 (north of the equator)

12.0pt">My birth was in February a winter month and the ayana was Uttarayana.

12.0pt">Lunar month was Magha, tithi was Shukla Trayodasi and week day was

Tuesday.

12.0pt">My Moon was in Geminie and my janam nakshatra was Punarvasu pada 1.

12.0pt">Sunrise: 07: 09: 55, Sunset: 18: 00: 18.

12.0pt">My Hora lord was Moon.
