Om Gurave Namah

Shri Sanjay and Solai,

Namaste.

1. Explain the changing of the seasons and its

connection with the above mentioned astronomical

factors.

A1) Seasons are defined by the position of the earth

in its orbit around the sun and are characterized by

differences in average temperature / hours of

daylight. The seasons occur because the axis on which

the earth turns is tilted with respect to the plane of

the earth’s orbit around the sun. The earth’s tilt

causes the North Pole to be closer to the sun for half

of the year and the South Pole is tilted closer to the

sun for the other half of the year, causing seasons.

The axis of the planet Mars is also tilted similarly,

so Mars experiences seasons much like the Earth.

The seasons are of unequal length/duration because the

earth’s orbit is slightly elliptical, and the sun is

not exactly at the center of the orbit. The earth

moves slightly faster when it is close to the sun than

when it is farther away, so the seasons that occur

when the earth is close to the sun pass more quickly.

The earth is closest to the sun in January and

farthest away in July, so the summer is longer than

the winter in the northern hemisphere. In the southern

hemisphere, the winter is longer than the summer.

2. There are some days of the year when the Sun either

doesn't rise or set above certain parts of the globe.

Please explain this phenomenon.

A2) The changes in temperature/ length of daylight

that accompany the seasons are different at different

latitudes. At the poles, summer is three months of

daylight ( the earth’s atmosphere bends the sun’s rays

enough to make the sun visible throughout the day and

night, even during the 12 hours the sun is below the

horizon ) and similarly winter is three months of

darkness. The Arctic and Antarctic circles, at

latitude 66°30’ north and 66°30’ south respectively,

mark the farthest points from the poles at which there

can be 24 hours of daylight or 24 hours of darkness.

3. Parasara mentions two classes of heavenly bodies:

the moving and non-moving ones. Please explain, what

will be the difference between their roles in the

astrological interpretation.

A3) The moving heavenly bodies are Grahas & upa/chaya

grahas and the relatively non-moving heavenly bodies

are Nakshatras. This definitions bestows a fixed kind

of nature/characteristics on Nakshatras, while the

nature of grahas is more dynamic/mutant/responsive,

depending upon their placement in different

nakshatras/rasis.

There are 27 nakshatras, three sets of nine stars

ruled by nava grahas, which occupies a third of the

zodiac (120 deg.) and the three stars ruled by any one

planet are in trine (120 degrees apart) from each

other. The position of the Moon at birth in these

stars determines the first dasha period.

4. If you are able to construct your own chart,

please do it and explain as many astronomical

principles from it as you can (terrestrial

latitude/longitude, season, Sun's cycle,

Sunrise/Sunset etc.). Also try to determine which

planets are above and under the horizon in your chart.

In which Ayana the Sun is?

The month of birth is Bhadrapada, and the

corresponding season is Varsha Rutu (Rainy season).

Sun is in Dakshinayana.

With Sagittarius rising, Jupiter, Saturn, Moon, Sun,

Mercury, Rahu, and Venus are above horizon, while Ketu

and Mars are yet to rise.

Regards,

Lakshmi
