Retrograde planets ARE CLOSER TO THE EARTH

Mr.Swanson,

A planet is sttronger when retrograde than its normal times - because of Chesta

bala (motional strength) among shadbalas - it is not always certain that a

retrograde planet is stronger than other planets.

Chesta bala is one of the shadbalas - the total strength depend on the shadbala

of each planet.

As ancient astrologers made direct observations of the

heavenly bodies, so we modern star watchers should

also consider what is happening "up there" when we

analyze certain planetary influences. So many of us

are focused on computer screens instead of the

observable sky these days (mea culpa).

 

As most of us know, a planet when retrograde is CLOSER

to the Earth than at any other time in its cycle, thus

usually making the planet much brighter than normal,

hence suggesting that the retrograde planet is

attempting to call our attention to something

important by making its appearance more visible.

 

My Jyotish guru taught me that retrograde planets are

stronger than direct planets, and often they do have

an internalizing effect. This can be both "good" and

"bad" depending on the specific planetary

significations, right?

 

For example, in a Capricorn Rising chart, Venus

retrograde in Capricorn is probably more auspicious

than for a Cancer Lagna with Venus retrograde in

Cancer.
