Dear sri Julian Swanson,

The quote that benifics when retrograde become very auspicious and malefics

more malefic is not from Parashar . it is from Kalyan Verma's Saravali.

The exact verse when translated reads like this:

"A benefic, if retrograde, is strong and is capable of conferring kingdom. If a

malefic is retrograde, it causes grief and purposeless wandering." ( 5th chapter

39th verse).

Infact Parashara or any ancients authorities of his age whose writings are

available to us (let us remember that only a few of the great teachings are

available now that too in imperfect form) have not dealt with the predictive

aspect of vakra (retrograde) planets in much detail

Kalyan Varma of all classical writers is the foremost who deals with retrograde

planets in some what direct manner.

While dealing with motional strength in the 4th chapter he says:

The planet, that is victorious in war, that is in its retrograde motion, or,

that is not combust become strong. The Luminaries get strength in northern

course. This is how Satyacharya detailed motional strength. ( 4th chapter 36th

verse)

You can see that he quotes Satyacharya whom Varahamihir holds in great esteem in

his Brihita jataka as the authority , but any of the available works of

Satyachaarya do not speak much on Vakra planets.

Again he says in 14th verse of 5th chapter:

"If a planet is retrograde, while in exaltation, it produces no effect (nothing

good will happen). This is the view held by some. Even, if it is in exaltation

by its entry in retrograde motion from the next Sign (for example Jupiter

entering Cancer from Leo), the effect is same, for it takes unduly long time in

such traversion."

Now to support his view that retrograde planets when malefic produce much evil.

While discussing BAALAARISTA he says :

"If Saturn is retrograde in a House of Mars, while Moon is in 6th, 8th, or an

Angle and aspect Mars, the child born lives for two years."

Some observations are made in Phaladeepikaa of MANTRESWARA regarding retrograde

planets esp. in connection with the fact that retrograde planets act like

exalted planets even when neecha or debilitated.

Now great results are ascribed to Venus in his Dasa when retrograde:

"VAKRAM GATSYAAPI BHRIGUSUTASYA DASAA BIPAAKE TWATI RAAJAPUJAA

MRIDANGA BHERI RABAYUKTAJAANAM BICHITRABASTRAABHARANAANIRAAJYAM"

MEANNING

: In the period of retrograde Venus prestige and fame is acquired due to king (

government), various auspicious occasions happen and excellent vehicles ,

valuable fabrics and kingdom may be acquired.

My personal experience is that retrograde sukra ( Venus) when otherwise not

afflicted heavily gives very good results in its Dasa or bhukti regarding

material prosperity .

Your jyotish Guru is absolutely right when he observes retrograde planets are

stronger than direct planets, and often they do have

an internalizing effect. This can be both "good" and"bad" depending on the

specific planetary

significations,

Now in PRASHNA ( horary) a malefic when retrograde becomes highly malefic

and a benefic continues to behave a benefic , although they may make the

process of achieving the object in view , a little erratic or evasive.
