Om Vishnave Namah

Haribol!

While on Devon Av. in Chicago yesterday, I came across this

magnificent carving of ten avataras of Lord Visnu, which I bought as a

gift for my father, who, through a different sampradaya, is becoming a

Vaisnava. I can identify some of the avataras with certainty, but I

need your help with some others.

Would some kind soul glance at the image below and help me

identify the unnamed avataras and correct me if I have misidentified

any? (The second row I have but guesses on.)

If the image did not make it to the distribution list (I cannot

remember if attachments are allowed) you can view it at

http://www.draughon.org/Avataras.jpg.

I believe the images to be:

Back row: Lord Hayagriva (but I was expecting Lord Kalki; are

They the same?)

Third row: Lord Ramacandra, Lord Krsna.

Second row: unknown (Lord Vamanadeva perhaps?), unknown,

unknown (Lord Parasurama perhaps? Is that an axe He has?)

Front row: Lord Matsya, Lord Kurma, Lord Varaha, Lord

Nrsimhadeva.

I greatly appreciate any correction and instruction anyone can

offer.

Dandavats to all,

With best regards.

Dear jpd:

In Maharishi Parshara's book on Hora Sastra he describes the 10 incarnations

with these names and associated with these Planets...

"The Lord....has incarnated as the planets (Grahas) to bestow on the living

beings the results due to their Karmas.

"From the Sun God the incarnation of Rama,

from the Moon, that of Krishna....

from Mars....that of Narasimha,

from Mercury that of Budhdha,

from Jupiter that of

Vamana,

from Venus, that of Parasu Rama,

from Saturn, that of Koorma (Tortoise),

from Rahu, that of Varaha (Pig) and from

Ketu,...that of Meena (Fish).....

The avataras of Vishnu are:

1. Matsya (Fish)

2. Kurma (Tortoise)

3. Varaha (Boar)

4. Narasimha (Man Lion)

5. Vamana (Dwarf)

6. Parasurama (Axe wielder)

7. Rama (Bow and arrow)

8. Balarama (Plough)

9. Krishna (Flute)

10. Kalki (with a sword)

The last photo is Kalki Bhagavan. He is suppsoed to ride on a

horse, but is mistakenly depicted with a horse's head.

Hayagreeva is the one with a real horse's head.

Hare Krishna !!,

The number 7 image is that of Balarama( shown holding Bow) and the

rest of them are correct.

The last image (10) is that of Shri Hayagreeva and not of Kalki, as

Kalki avataar is supposed to be seated on a horse and is not horse

faced himself.

FYI, the 7th Avataar is of Buddha whereas it is shown as Balarama

here.

Hare Krishna

Dear Sriram,

Balarama holds Plough, I was thinking he was Kalki with sword. So

there is no kalki in the picture.

And Rama has a Bow.

All of the 9 Graha Avatars of Vishnu are there. (as given by Parasara)

Hayagreeva is not a avatar for the Graha.

I think 3 from left in bottom row is Varaha Avaatar.

and right most is of course Narasimha deva.

-Warm Regards
