Dasha Periods and Timing

Dear List Members,

I have a question regarding Dasha periods and timing of when thier effects

fructify during their dasha period.

Could someone please clarify for me when in the dasha period for each planet

its karmas tend to fructify, beginning, middle or end?

My understanding is that the effects of different planetary dashas tend to

fructify at different times during the dasha period, or even after the dasha

period is over, (i.e. in the beginning of the next maha dasha), depending on the

nature of the planet. I have been told that this depends on whether the

planet rises "head first, tail first, or both head and tail", that "head first"

gives its strongest effect in the beginning of the dasha period, "tail first"

gives its strongest effects at the end of the dasha (or bhukti) period, and

"head

and tail" would have strongest effects in the middle, (or is it at the

beginning and the end?). However, I do not know which planets rise head first,

tail

first, or in the middle.

Additionally, my understanding is that Ketu dasha tends to be strongest at

the end, and that it tends to have a "sting in its tail", i.e. it tends to have

a strong, sudden and unexpected effect at the end of its dasha or bhukti

period. Rahu, as I understand it, tends to give (usually materially) in the

beginning of its dasha, but take back what was given at the end of its dasha

period

(i.e. what is gained may then be lost). I would assume that Saturn would

fructify at the end of its dasha, but that it would tend to come to slow

fruition

over a long time, since that is its nature. Is this correct?

However, I do not know how any of the other planets behave in thier dasha and

bhukti periods. Could someone please clarify this for me? How does each

planet behave in terms of when during thier dasha period their karmas tend to

fructify? Does it follow the same pattern for their bhukti period within

another

planets mahadasha? Also, I understand that the karmas of a dasha period

often do not reach full fruition until the beginning of the next dasha period

(i.e. during the first bhukti of the new dasha period). Is this true for all

planetary dasha?

I realize this is a fairly basic question, but I am hearing and reading

conflicting opinions on it, and would really appreciate any clarity or input

that

anyone can give me on this question. I appreciate any and all responses and

thank you in advance.

Dear Susan

I will offer you my own experience as an astrologer. Note that I started as

a western astrologer then went sidereal by way of the ACVA program. I guess

I want you to understand that I am not a traditional vedic astrologer, but

am a full time practicing one.

The question is a good one. The answer in many ways has to do with the

individual as much as the planet. I have seen folks who are really in tune

with their charts fructify the MD very quickly. Those that resist or are

fearful of change manifestit later.

Rahu gives and takes throughout the cycle. If you lose your head in some

manner he will take away the gains.

If a planet is well placed and a good friend to the chart the MD will be

easier.

I have seen folks literally begin to reachfor the new MD while in the final

bhukti of the current MD. In fact, this is one of the most difficult

periods because your at the end of one phase of your life and not yet begun

the next.

I have seen powerful manifestation of good and ill at the very beginning of

the MD for many people and this does not seem to depend upon the planet but

upon the person.

This is what I see working in practice...not a theory. It is much easier to

predict what will come if you understand the native and how atuned he or she

is to the planets in the nakshatras within the birth chart. If out of tune,

the MD will be difficult...even if the planet is a great friend.

now you have yet another opinion to add to the growing list.

Dear Cynthia,

I appreciate your clear reply to my questions regarding dasha and bhukti

periods. I, too, am a western astrologer, practicing for 20 years. I am in the

process of learning Vedic astrology, so I am in a period of transition and

adjustment between these two systems.

I appreciate hearing your observations, based on your experience. When I

look back at the process by which I learned western astrology, it was really

through watching the influence of transits and progressions and seeing what kind

of results they yielded for different people, which informed my learning more

than what I gathered from classes and reading, at least beyond the basics. The

dasha periods present a challenge to this "hands on" approach, because the

periods of time, at least for the maha dashas, are so long. It is more

difficult to see their overall progress and effect, from onset to resolution.

So your

personal insights, from your experience of having looked at a lot of charts,

arei nvaluable.

_______________

This makes a lot of sense to me. I have seen a lot of conflicting statements

as regards timing of fruition of karmas in dasha periods. Some authors say

the maha dasha frucifies in its last bhukti. Others say that the maha dasha

does not fructify until the first bhukti of the next maha dasha. In reality, I

suspect that it is probably both, since transitions are always, well,

"transitional"! Parashara seems to indicate that a dasha does not fructify

during its

first bhukti. But I have seen abrupt changes occur at the beginning of a

dasha period that can shape the whole course of the next dasha period.

Sometimes it is easier to talk about specifs, so here is an example of a

transition from Jupiter maha dasha to Saturn maha dasha, with 4th house Jupiter

and 5th house Saturn. (Lagna is Cancer.) Three years before the end of the

Jupiter dasha, the person finally found a home they were comfortable in, after

years of searching and many moves. No sooner did they find it, however, that

they were suddenly forced to be away from home for long periods of time. This

lasted for most of the last 2 yrs of the Jupiter dasha. During the first

bhukti of the Saturn dasha, they lost their home entirely, due to a an

unexpected

shift in finances. However, this loss became the fuel for the stabilizing

efforts of the Saturn dasha, such that they ended up with a more stabile home

situation by the sixth year of the Saturn than they had had during their entire

Jupiter dasha. (Incidently, I should add that Jupiter is hemmed in by malefics,

Saturn in the 5th and Sun-Rahu in the 3rd, so tends to give mixed results.)

______

<<Rahu gives and takes throughout the cycle. If you lose your head in some

manner he will take away the gains.>>

Good right metaphor for Rahu! lol Whether one "loses their head" seems to

be based on the level of "greedy gut" and "gimme, gimme" of the person's

attitude during the Rahu dasha. One woman in Rahu maha dasha who liked to use

her

spiritual energies, as well to manulate the people, to further her material

pursuits, innocently told me, "But I like getting "stuff"! lol I might add

that, although she appeared to be gaining, she has actually lost more than she

gained over the years.

Do you find, from your experience, that there are other planets that show

specific patterns to their dasha periods? Many authors state that Ketu gives

its

strongest effects at the end of the dasha period, (i.e., it has a "sting" at

the end), while Rahu seems to be more erratic, for the reasons you mentioned,

depending on what the person handles its energy and effects. What about the

other planets? Have you noticed in your practice which planets seem to

fructify sooner or later, erratically or cyclically, based on the nature of the

planet itself? (Of course, this will be modified by placement, aspects, etc.)

Or

do you feel that it is completely individual to the chart and the level of

personal maturity and spiritual evolution of the native?

Thanks so much for your insights.

Susan :-)
