Guest guest
Hello all, Is there someone who chants any mantra without any mala like tulsi mala? I mean, is there anyone here who just listens to audio mantras or chants counting fingers and not with any mala or anything? What is the effect? I am curious about it, any feedback would be appreciated. Best wishes Tanvir What can not happen, can never happen. Which is mine, is forever mine. Guest guest
Hello, I do not use a mala when chanting mantras. I tired it, but found it uncomfortable, I would just end up holding it my hand without actually using it to count..For about 5 years now, I play a cd of the Gayatri mantra at night while I¹m sleeping. I put the cd player on ³repeat² mode and let it play, very very softly in the living room all night long. You can barely hear it in the bedroom, but you can feel it. It has made a huge difference in the quality of sleep and creates a peaceful environment in my home. It is said that mantras create a certain vibration which has an effect even on a molecular level. I do believe that actually, consciously chanting the mantra is most helpful, just hearing it, can help. I heard about a psychiatric hospital in the US playing the Gayatri Mantra very softly (barely audible) in their wards and found that it helped their patients a great deal. On the subject of mantras, would anyone know if the Gayatri mantra is suitable for anyone, or are there cases where it should not be used? What about Shiva mantra? Are there instances where it should not be used? Thank you, Sincerely, Francoise On 11/20/03 4:28, "Tanvir" <tanvir wrote: > Hello all, > > Is there someone who chants any mantra without any mala like tulsi mala? Guest guest
hey there, there are ways to perform purascharrans/counting on fingers, when you don't have easy access to a mala. 3 sections of a finger acts as 3 beads, and you have to skip two sections of a finger(usually middle) for meru and sumeru (like the seperator bead of the mala). now, there are variations for a.)which two sections of which finger could be considered meru/sumeru and b.) which section will be a starting bead, it is different based upon what type of chanting you are interested in. in general, left hand is used to count to ten, and right hand is used to keep track of multiples of 10, so you get a total of 100 ( and not 108) in one round. because it is required to do mantras in multiple of 108 ( 9 actually), you have to adjust last mala accroding. this method is known as 'kar mala' (or palm rosary). one possible book i can refer you to is 'mantra rahasya',but you may find others. my personal belief regarding listening to a mantra that it is not the same as chanting for following two main reasons: 1. you are not making mansik/vachic sound, that means no internal chakras are resonating. 2. you don't even know how many purascharans you've performed, which is essential. this way, to me, just listening won't cut it. listening mantra is soothing, good for meditation and may intensify bhakti yoga, but its not the same deal. again, these beliefs are mine only and i also trust that faith can move mountains, so it may be possible for someone to get the same results just by listening! regards utpal gjlist, "Tanvir" <tanvir@s...> wrote: > Hello all, > > Is there someone who chants any mantra without any mala like tulsi mala? Guest guest
~ Om Namah Shivaya ~ Dear Tanvir, As per my limited knowledge, Chanting and listening mantras are two different things. Ideally one should chant the mantra, so it gives maximum effect. In case where a person cannot chant a mantra (due to illness, physical problems or say language problems) then mantra can be listened. Yes listening mantras have soothing effect.
