Guest guest
Hi Robyn, The Kuat System overall has to be updated and re-tooled to be useful in the Modern Western world, or for that matter, even in the modern Indian world. The Kutas, as I'm sure you know, are 10 catergories, based on the couple's natal Moon positions, in comparison to each other. This is a very strong recognition in Vedic Astrology of the primacy of the Moon in all our lives. The book Light on Relationships really gives such a updating of the Kutas, and it would be best if you could consult it. But I will give a brief breakdown here: 1. Gana Kuta: This measures the level of temperment between the couple 2. Rasi Kuta: This deals with the social impact the couple's union will have on the extended family and larger society; it also speaks to what degree they will have children 3. Rajju Kuta: This measures the longevity of the union, and of the couple themselves 4. Dina Kuta: Again, this measures the overall tenor and longevity of the union 5. Yoni Kuta: This assess the level of sexual compatibility between the couple 6. Mahendra Kuta: Deals with the interaction of any children born to the couple 7. Graha Maitram Kuta: Again, deals with the interaction with children, what chances the couple has to have kids, and also, to what extent the couple are on the same page with respect to mental outlook 8. Vedha Kuta: This has to do with the couple's ability to tackle obstacles and deal with hardships in life 9. Stri-Drigha Kuta: This has to do with the level of material prosperity the couple in question has, or will have in the future. 10. Vasya Kuta: This measures the extent of attraction or "magnetism" each partner has over the other. There are several other catergories that fall outside of the traditional Kuat system, but nevertheless has proven themselves to be very important. They are: 1. Nadi Kuta: This measures the longevity of the couple based on the more medical aspects of Jyotish and Ayruveda; this kuta is very important when assessing the potential for child birthing, i.e., birth defects, etc. 2. Varna Kuta: This has to do with the intellectual, spiritual and philosophical degree of compatibility between the couple 3. Gothram Kuta: This has to do with compatibiity based on similiar caste or social class between the couple. This is similiar to Rasi Kuta above, and while the concept of Caste is strong in India, I would argue that it is almost as strong if not stronger in other areas of the world, especially here in the West. For example, remember that movie, "Look Who's Coming to Dinner"? If you do, you've seen Gothram and Rasi Kutas in action. And then there are other ways you can compare the Moons of the couple, mainly in terms of Naksatra placement. For example, you can compare the basic "aim" of the Moons. For example, if the male's Moon is in a Dharma Naksatra, and the woman's Moon is in an Artha Naksatra, there may be a powerful emphasis on career advancement and all the material prosperity that it would bring as a result. On the other hand, if the male's Moon is in a Moksha Naksatra and the female's Moon lies in a Kama Naksatra, it could suggests an inherent misalignment with respect to the basic natures or drives of the couple. The moksha male be be more interested in issues that center around the Spirit/Human Development, while the female's Kama Moon may center around more creature comforts. This can signal a serious area of contention, especially if the charts of the couple overall point in these directions. Another way to look at the Moons in compatibility is to check what Elements or Tatvas the Moons fall in. Just like you would in terms of Rasi Moons, the elements here in terms of Naksatra are very important. The Navamsa Moon positions of the couple in consideration are very important as well, since the Navamsa suggests the true, inner nature of the person. Their sign position and lords can have a very important impact on the relationship. There are many more things I could add, but the bottom line in all of this is not to take any of it too literally, seriously. Indeed, the keen jyotishi will not see the Kutas as more than 30% of the overall compatibility analysis, the other 2/3 being in the form of the overall assessment of the Rasi and Navamsa charts. Another thing that is not mentioned is that the inherent strength or weakness of the Moons are very important as well. A couple that scores very high in the Kutas may in fact fare very poorly, due to one or both partners having problematic Moons. On the other hand, a couple that has a relatively low Kuta score can make out well, if their Moons are very strong and well placed in their charts. I tend to stay away from the idea of overall point totals when it comes to the Kutas, because it can be misleading. In today's world, I think it best to see the Kuats as specific areas of concern within the potential relationship, and if these areas are weak, they suggest areas where the couple should work to improve things. All in all, Vedic Synastry is far and away more involved, intricate and complex than its Western Astrological counterpart, although I must say, that it too has its good points. Hope this exaplins things a bit. Guest guest
Hi Mu, Thanks for that. Very interesting. As Anna says, i like the way you write complex issues in that easy to understand way. In this particular chart compatibility, both their moons signs are debilitated in Scorp and although there is a high Kuta score, that's sure to cause problems. Best wishes Robyn - "Mu'Min Bey" <mumin_bey <gjlist> Sunday, April 27, 2003 2:28 PM [GJ] Gothrams and Kutas, for Robin, All > Hi Robyn, > > The Kuat System overall has to be updated and > re-tooled to be useful in the Modern Western world, or > for that matter, even in the modern Indian world. > > The Kutas, as I'm sure you know, are 10 catergories, > based on the couple's natal Moon positions, in > comparison to each other.
